SUMMARY:ATA: Other Cinema: ARCHIVE FEVER2
DESCRIPTION:PRELINGER: FILM: THE LIVING RECORD OF OUR MEMORY \nWe are over the moon to have snagged the NorCal debut of this major international doc\, especially since one of its principal interviewees\, Rick Prelinger\, is here in-person to introduce it! A Spanish-Canadian co-production\, Inés Toharia Terán‘s epic two-hour overview automatically becomes thee up-to-date ‘bible’ on arguably the most critical cinematic practice of our particular time: film archiving! The cast of interview subjects includes B.Morrison\, D.Streible\, J.Mekas\, K.Loach\, K.Brownlow\, M.Toscano\, M.Scorsese\, S.Bromberg\, and many others! They explain what film preservation is and why it is needed. Our protagonists are custodians of film whose work behind the scenes safeguards the survival of motion pictures. Note: tonight there’s no first half/intermission\, but come early for pre-show pieces on Rick himself\, on Stephen Parr‘s Oddball Films\, and on proto-cinema (16mm!). $13

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power
DESCRIPTION:What is power? Who wields it? How can it be owned\, contested\, and exercised? For Asian women whose embodiment of power has culturally been limited to either Dragon Lady\, Lotus Blossom or Tiger Mom\, these questions are ever more prevalent. The true definition of power remains elusive and open to inquiry. \nCurated by Yeu Q Nguyen\, Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander woman agency and resilience in a multitude of manifestations. Jade is a rare mineral imbued with different metaphysical and cultural meanings\, used since prehistoric times to adorn objects associated with power such as ceremonial daggers\, jewelry\, and crowns. Using jade as an allusion to more diverse definitions of power\, the exhibition pays homage to overlooked figures in our history and establishes new legacies of leadership for a more equitable future for AAPI women everywhere. \nPresented by Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) as part of their 26th annual United States of Asian America Festival: REIMAGINING HORIZONS \nCurator\nYeu Q Nguyen \nExhibiting Artists\nAnh Lee\nAJ Schnettler\nChoppy Oshiro\nIna Kaur\nIS/LAND Asian American Performance Collaborative\nJoanna L. SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: Bay Area 5 Sketch Tuesday + Amanda Lynn Benefit
DESCRIPTION:111 Minna Gallery is excited to invite you to our latest art event Sketch Tuesday in conjunction with our Bay Area 5 show on Tuesday May 23rd from 5-9! With dozens of artists including our current exhibiting artists: Max Ehrman (Eon 75)\, Seibot\, Nicole Hayden\, Josh Thurman\, and Messy Beck. \nSketch Tuesday is part of an ongoing tradition at 111 Minna Gallery for over a decade. Originally founded by Sasha Eckes\, then carried on by Brad K Alder for 12 years until Covid created a short hiatus.. \nThe idea of Sketch Tuesday is to bring together artists of various media and career levels under one roof to create work for sale in front of a live audience. Typically – all sales go directly to the artists themselves – but in this case\, all participating artists have come together to support prolific artist and muralist Amanda Lynn who is recovering from a recent injury. \nThis event allows the public to become more familiar with individual artists and artists to become more familiar with other artists – thus opening up networks and intimate art sales at affordable prices. \nFeaturing:\nAmanda Lynn\nIan Ross\nJet Martinez\nD Young V\nFleetwood SF\nHenry Lewis\nBrett Amory\nMicah Lebrun\nDavid Choong Lee\nSteel MSK\nChad Hasegawa\nOptimist Williams\nJohn Casey\nJohn Vochatzer\nEmily Fromm\nLillian Shanahan\nJames Perry\nSeibot\nMessy Beck\nJosh Thurman\nNicole Andrijauskas\nRob “Pengoo” Casanovas\nNora Bruhn\nRalph C. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Tasting Seminar: French Cheese & Wine Pairings - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$90.00\nMember Price:\n$80.00 \nA 90-minute tasting seminar\, served with crackers to cleanse the palate. We highly recommend eating a heavy snack or meal before arriving. This class is limited to 24 students over age 21. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nWith good reason\, French cheese and wine is celebrated as some of the world’s best. They invented triple-cremes and sparkling wine that begs for reasons to celebrate\, after all. But sometimes the region’s offerings can seem a little tricky. In this class\, cheese and wine expert Kirstin Jackson will break down France’s complicated wine labels and specific cheese regions to teach you how to harmoniously enjoy the two together\, à la Française. You’ll learn that the country’s pairings are all about tradition\, regional combinations\, and that once you have the basics down\, pairing is actually quite easy. By the end of the class\, you’ll have the tools to pair at home\, and perhaps more important\, after 4 wines\, and 7 cheeses\, you’ll also be very happy. \nBottles of wines sampled in class will be available for purchase\, so bring a credit card and a bag to take home your favorites. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to participate\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nKirstin Jackson\, author of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession. Kirstin’s specialties include wine and cheese tasting seminars and cheesemaking classes.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Frankie Rose\, SRSQ\, Houses of Heaven\, DJ Omar Perez (popscene)
DESCRIPTION:$20 advance and $25 day of show \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nLove As Projection is the new album by Frankie Rose\, her fifth studio LP and her first since 2017’s Cage Tropical. Frankie Rose has forged an enviable musical legacy\, from playing with bands like Crystal Stilts and The Vivian Girls but on Love As Projection she takes a bold step into electronic pop production. A sumptuous recorded statement\, it dances in ecstasy and broods on the tumult of the western world’s decay in equal proportion. At the heart of the album is glowing\, confident songwriting\, resplendent in hooks and choruses but still touched with an optimism undimmed. \nAfter spending nearly two decades establishing herself across New York and Los Angeles independent music circles\, Rose re-emerges after six years with a fresh form\, aesthetic\, and ethos. Celebrated over the years for her expansive approach to songwriting\, lush atmospherics\, and transcendent vocal melodies and harmonies\, Love As Projection is a reintroduction of her established style through the lens of contemporary electronic pop. Recorded with producer Brandt Gassman and mixed with long-term collaborator Jorge Elbrecht this is the album Frankie Rose has been building up to her entire career.
