SUMMARY:Manny’s: Water Warriors: Protecting the Bay\, One Stroke at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Join SF Baykeeper and distance swimmer Michelle Goodwin in conversation celebrating Bay stewardship and the power of women in water. \nJoin us for a compelling and inspiring conversation celebrating endurance\, environmental stewardship\, and the power of women in water. \nOn the anniversary of the first woman to swim the English Channel\, we honor Michelle Goodwin\, who recently completed her own English Channel crossing. Michelle will share her journey\, from the grueling physical and mental preparation to the moment she stepped onto the shores of France\, highlighting the personal and symbolic significance of her swim. In dialogue with Diane Walton\, board member of San Francisco Baykeeper\, the conversation will explore the intersection of athletic achievement and environmental advocacy. \nDiane will speak to Baykeeper’s mission to protect and restore the Bay’s ecosystems\, ensuring clean water for wildlife and safe conditions for swimmers like Michelle. Together\, they’ll discuss the urgent need to combat pollution\, support marine biodiversity\, and foster a healthier future for the Bay Area’s waters. This talk is a celebration of resilience\, a call to action for environmental responsibility\, and a tribute to the legacy of women who dare to cross boundaries—both literal and figurative.

SUMMARY:Queer Arts Featured: The Castro: The Story of San Francisco's Best-Known LGBTQ+ Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco Bay Area residents & visitors: Mark your calendars for this Thursday evening\, November 13\, at Queer Arts Featured (@queerartsfeatured) for the launch of a new illustrated booklet on the history of the Castro District. \nProf. Jen Reck (@jrotoole) of San Francisco State University (@sanfranciscostate) and I are the co-authors. \nPublished by the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District ( @castrolgbtq)\, the work is based on extensive original research using archives\, oral history interviews and published primary and secondary sources. \nThe history we’ve uncovered is quite surprising\, tracing the emergence of what is perhaps the world’s most famous gayborhood back to the early 1950s. \nWe reveal unexpected stories of diversity\, conflict\, resistance\, joy\, wit\, sexual expression\, gender autonomy\, community building and cultural production in the face of exclusion\, trauma\, and social and legal persecution alongside growing recognition and support from our city. \nJoin us to learn about our research\, our efforts to bring a nuanced analysis to understanding the Castro\, and our ongoing work to produce a full-scale book (the last of which means we’re keen to hear your stories about the neighborhood). \nPublication Launch:\n“The Castro: The Story of San Francisco’s Best-Known LGBTQ+ Neighborhood” by Gerard Koskovich & Jen Reck \nQueer Arts Featured\n575 Castro St.\, San Francisco\nThursday\, November 13\n6:00–7:30 p.m.\nFree & open to the public\nCopies of the booklet will be available for purchase & signing

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Across the Table Part III: Discussing Israel and Palestine
DESCRIPTION:A brave conversation on Israel and Palestine between Maz Jadallah and Steve Scheier \nJoin Maz Jadallah and Steve Scheier for this important discussion. \nMaz Jadallah is a Palestinian American entrepreneur and long time resident of the Bay Area. His parents are Palestinian refugees from the 1948 Nakba\, or “catastrophe”\, that saw the mass displacement and dispossession of 750\,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. \nSteve Scheier is a Jewish Amercan author\, leadership cultivator and speaker. \nWhat We’re Doing \nWe are two relatively new friends—one Palestinian American\, one Jewish American—who met through mutual circles and found ourselves drawn into deep\, ongoing conversations about Israel/Palestine. Despite the emotional weight and complexity of the topic\, we discovered that by grounding our dialogue in trust\, curiosity\, and shared humanity\, we could engage meaningfully across difference. In this first session\, we’ll sit down for a 1:1 public conversation—not a debate—to model what it looks like to ask hard questions\, explore inherited narratives\, and listen with empathy\, even when we don’t agree. \nWhy We’re Doing It \nIn the U.S.\, conversations about Israel/Palestine are often shut down\, avoided\, or reduced to slogans. They can be especially fraught between Jewish and Palestinian communities\, where pain\, fear\, and political assumptions run deep.We believe there is a deep hunger for honest\, empathetic\, and courageous dialogue—not to score points\, but to build understanding. Our aim is to create a space where people can witness how trust can form across divides\, and where difficult truths can be spoken without destroying connection. \nThere will not be a live audience Q&A. Instead\, we invite attendees to submit questions via this form. These questions will help shape future dialogues and allow us to address sensitive issues thoughtfully and thoroughly. \nThis is the third talk of a 3 Part Series exploring this subject. \nProceeds from this event to support World Central Kitchen

SUMMARY:Manny’s: November Art Opening: Sofie at Manny's
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art opening featuring Sofie’s abstract paintings\, inspired by her travels and experiences\, exploring form\, color\, and ideas. \nSofie has lived and worked in several art buildings\, and her studio is currently in the SF Art Building in the art district. \nHaving traveled a great deal\, she has absorbed many new\nenvironments that have influenced her abstract paintings. She\ncreates art from vivid memories\, depicting her interpretation and\ninvestigation of the outer world\, diffusing it with her inner world\nideas. Her paintings are modern in approach. \nHer abstract art embodies hidden content. Each series speaks to\nvarious philosophical approaches and investigations. Her abstract\nart expresses a harmonious division of space\, balance\, and\ndynamics between form and color. The idea in each painting is\nexpressed through its intricate color composition\, either in an action\npainting or a meditative\, spontaneous approach. \nBuilding\nHer mediums are oils\, acrylics\, and mixed media on canvas and watercolors.

Chef Instructor Henry will teach you classic Taiwanese dishes that embody autumn! If you’ve never traveled to Taiwan\, you might not have encountered these foods before. Henry is excited to share these lesser-known dishes with you! \nFirst\, we’ll make Bawan\, which is a true Taiwanese creation. Utilizing sweet potato starch\, the wrapper is a thick\, chewy\, QQ texture enveloping luscious mushrooms\, bamboo shoots\, and pork. We steam these dumplings in a bowl and oil-poach them. Next\, we’ll make a savory sticky rice dish called Oil Rice. This classic long-grain sticky rice dish is a perfect side dish and some might say\, a great addition to your Thanksgiving table. We’ll be talking about the difference between long- and short-grain sticky rice\, and how to properly steam (not boil) your rice. Lastly\, we’ll make Sesame Oil Chicken. In Taiwan\, this dish would be classified as food as medicine. Filled with warming spices\, it’s often served to postpartum mothers or anyone healing from illness. The piece features appearances from a number of historic figures featured in Hamletmachine\, such as Stalin\, Walter Benjamin\, and Dostoevsky\, and others that are familiarly linked. Accompanying the figures in Hamletmachine are Lewis’ own experiences of familial loss. The stories in My Obsession are accompanied by dance\, an abstract and silent media\, and one\, Lewis claims\, with the power to reshape the past and recontextualize the present. \nTickets:\n$20 – Community\n$25 – General Admission\n$35 – Patron \nNOTAFLOF: No one is turned away for lack of funds for the Friday shows. SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Making a Rainwater Harvesting System
DESCRIPTION:Cost: $10\, but you’ll get a $10 gift card for attending the workshop. Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission \nThe winter and spring months are San Francisco’s rainy season and every drop counts\, especially in our area\, which routinely experiences drought. Learn how to easily and safely capture rainwater to use in your garden or home. In this workshop\, you’ll learn what to consider and where to start for systems as simple as a single barrel under a downspout\, or as complicated as an indoor plumbing system for toilet flushing. Keep precious rainwater out of the sewer and keep money in your pocket by harvesting the water that lands on your roof. \nThe workshop fee is $10\, but you will get a $10 gift card to the Urban Farmer Store for attending! Please consider making a donation to GFE for this workshop\, which is free when you attend and receive a $10 gift card. \nInstructor Kat Sawyer strives to make the Bay Area more resilient by implementing natural water management strategies in homes\, schools\, and public places. As Greening Urban Watersheds Program Manager for The Watershed Project\, Kat develops green infrastructure throughout the city of Richmond\, constructing rain gardens and bioswales that demonstrate ways to manage urban stormwater with landscapes. Kat has designed and built rainwater catchment systems in more than 25 San Francisco public schools\, engaging volunteers from each school community in the process. Kat educates the public about water reclamation and re-use\, directing her efforts towards tangible activities that encourage people to become better water stewards in an urban environment. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.
