SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: William Basinski with Kelly Moran
DESCRIPTION:On April 30\, William Basinski brings his signature approach to experimental music to Gray Area. A classically trained composer who has worked in experimental media for over 30 years\, from New York City to California\, Basinski uses obsolete technology and analog tape loops to shape haunting\, slow-moving soundscapes that linger on memory\, impermanence\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Gua Bao
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, you’ll learn how to make the classic split steamed bun\, known as Gua Bao. In Taiwan\, the braised pork belly version with pickled mustard greens and peanut powder is a classic street sandwich locals lovingly refer to as “The Taiwanese Hamburger” when talking to foreigners! In this class\, we’ll be making the bun\, filling\, and condiments from scratch. This classic street food relies on a braising technique used in Chinese cooking. Whole wheat flour in the bao dough offers a nutty aroma\, adding to the savory and sweet pork belly\, peanut powder\, and spicy salty moments from the mustard greens. It’s a harmonious and beloved combination! Besides the classic braised pork belly\, we’ll make another filling: an eggplant version in the three-cup style (if you’ve heard of three-cup chicken\, you will know!) that is sweet and savory. Along with the bao\, we’ll make a few classic side dishes to complete the meal: smacked cucumbers and braised tofu salad. \nMENU \nBraised Pork Belly Gua Bao \nThree-Cup Eggplant Gua Bao \nSmacked Cucumbers \nBraised Tofu and Kombu Salad

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Mariana Valencia - Jacklean (Jacklean)
DESCRIPTION:Savor the thrill of the unexpected in Jacklean (Jacklean). Governed by play and collaborative improvisation\, New York powerhouse choreographer and dancer Mariana Valencia’s improvised gestures are prompted by transmissions from Jazmin Romero’s vocal and instrumental repertoire of cumbia\, punk\, jazz\, and electronic music. Can an everlasting process frame a final performance \nChoreographer and dancer Mariana Valencia’s lyrical\, witty\, and transgressive performances are created from rigorously ordered sequences in which movement\, song\, and spoken text are improvised upon in front of audiences. She is invested in the idea that improvisation carries emancipatory potential. Inserting cultural traditions into contemporary dance spaces\, her movement lexicon draws on her ethnographic research\, modern and postmodern vocabularies\, and pedestrian movement. Valencia has received several awards for her choreography\, including a 2024 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts\, a 2023 Creative Capital Award\, the 2018 Bessie Award for Outstanding “Breakout” Choreographer\, and her work was included in the 2019 Whitney Biennial. She has received major commissions from Abrons Arts Center\, Baryshnikov Arts Center\, Chocolate Factory Theater\, Danspace Project\, Performance Space New York\, and the Shed. Valencia is based in New York City. \nJazmin Romero is an interdisciplinary artist from Los Angeles\, California. Her work explores how memory is embodied through performance\, video\, sound\, and sculpture. Romero’s practice is concerned with how experimentation\, improvisation\, and collectivity allow for alternative forms of storytelling. She engages with the relationship between musical gesture and physical form to produce scores\, assemblages\, and compositions. She is also a member of various performance and music production collectives\, such as COQUETA.
