SUMMARY:Manny’s: Joe (Mission Local) & Joe (SF Standard) Discuss the Results of the Primary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a riveting discussion with renowned journalists Joe Eskenazi (Mission Local) and Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez (SF Standard) for a deep review of the state of politics today. Joe and Joe will hit the results of the June Primary. What does this mean for the various elections going into November? What happened with the ballot measures? Any big surprises or things to keep an eye on? Nothing is off limits with these two! \n____________________ \nJoe Fitzgerald Rodriguez is a politics reporter for The Standard. He was raised in San Francisco and has spent his career in his beloved\, foggy\, city by the bay. Joe is a proud alum of City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University. He most recently wrote for KQED’s politics team\, and previously penned a local political column for the San Francisco Examiner. Joe began reporting at 12-years-old\, when he grilled former mayor Willie Brown for the Marina Middle School newspaper\, The Penguin Press. When not reporting\, Joe enjoys playing retro video games and is a die-hard Trekkie. \n____________________ \nJoe Eskenazi was born in San Francisco\, raised in the Bay Area\, and attended UC Berkeley. He never left. “Your humble narrator” was a writer and columnist for SF Weekly from 2007 to 2015\, and a senior editor at San Francisco Magazine from 2015 to 2017. You may also have read his work in the Guardian (U.S. and U.K.); San Francisco Public Press; San Francisco Chronicle; San Francisco Examiner; Dallas Morning News; and elsewhere. He resides in the Excelsior with his wife and three (!) kids\, 4.3 miles from his birthplace and 5\,474 from hers. The Northern California branch of the Society of Professional Journalists named Eskenazi the 2019 Journalist of the Year.

SUMMARY:ATA: A Time and Space Machine: Abigail Severance & Lori Goldston
DESCRIPTION:Shot entirely in public spaces\, Abigail Severance’s recent work plumbs the politics and promises of witnessing through a lens\, tenderly wrestling with our apocalyptic anxieties. From trains and elevators to tourist traps and quiet nightscapes\, she explores how entropy and surrender might stir radical imagination. In imagining what comes after the anthropocene\, what could it mean to consciously surrender human authorship of the global landscape? What promise do the wild\, rewilding\, and wilderness hold for uncertain futures? \nWith live accompaniment by cellist Lori Goldston\, the program begins with Public Square (2026)\, a collection of moving images that propose a “documentary choreography” to feel how time passes as people occupy\, resist or claim public space. The second part of the program includes two of Severance’s recent train films (You Recall the Night Train & You Are A Time Machine\, both 2025). In an experiment toward possible world-makings and un-makings\, we find a train is both soothing and sinister\, both body and apparatus\, a rocking\, syncopated animal\, a time and space machine. \nDoor 7\, program 7:30\, approximate duration 60 min. \nAbigail Severance\nA Los Angeles-based artist\, Abigail Severance makes films and other images about nostalgia\, flawed history\, and queer thought. Her films exist between documentary\, fiction\, and abstraction\, using moving image as a meditative practice for contemplation.\nAbigail’s films have shown at Sundance\, The Broad Museum (L.A.)\, Studio Museum Harlem\, HBO\, MIX LGBT Festival\, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, among other venues. Her work was included in the 2018 Pacific Standard Time Festival: Live Art LA/LA and her first short “Pump” (1999) was featured in the New Queer Cinema retrospective at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival. Abigail has received a Fulbright\, a Film Independent fellowship\, and a CalArts Research & Practice Grant for “We the Devoted\,” a near-future narrative about borders and labor made collectively with its ensemble cast.\nShe is currently at work on a video & photo series “You\, An Archive\,” which draws together radical queer imaginaries and the intelligence of natural systems (forests\, glaciers\, oceans). She has been faculty at the CalArts School of Film/Video since 2009 where she also served as Dean 2019-2024. \nLori Goldston\nClassically trained and rigorously de-trained\, possessor of a restless\, semi-feral spirit\, Lori Goldston is a cellist\, composer\, improvisor\, producer\, writer and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist\, amplified or acoustic\, is full\, textured\, committed and original. A relentless inquirer\, her work drifts freely across borders that separate genre\, discipline\, time and geography.\nCurrent and former collaborators and/or bosses include Earth\, Nirvana\, Mirah\, Jessika Kenney\, Ilan Volkov\, Eyvind Kang\, Stuart Dempster\, David Byrne\, Terry Riley\, Jherek Bischoff\, Malcom Goldstein\, Steve Von Till\, Lonnie Holley\, Cat Power\, Ellen Fullman\, Maya Dunietz\, Mik Quantius\, Embryo\, O Paon\, Tara Jane O’Neil\, Natacha Atlas\, Broken Water\, Ed Pias\, Christian Rizzo and Sophie Laly\, Threnody Ensemble\, Cynthia Hopkins\, 33 Fainting Spells\, Vanessa Renwick\, Mark Mitchell\, Lynn Shelton\, and many more.\nHer work has been commissioned by and/or performed at the Kennedy Center\, Sydney Festival\, Cineteca Nacional de México\, Tectonics Festival\, Frye Art Museum\, Time Based Art Festival (TBA)\, WNYC\, The New Foundation\, Paris Fashion Week\, Northwest Film Forum\, On the Boards\, Seattle International Film Festival\, Seattle Jewish Film Festival\, Bumbershoot\, Crossing Border Festival\, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts\, Joe’s Pub\, the Stone\, University of Chicago\, and venues large and small throughout North America\, Mexico\, Australia\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Immersive Story Club
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area presents Immersive Story Club: a new events series highlighting excellence and diversity in virtual reality narrative experiences from around the world. \nLed by Gray Area Cultural Incubator member Danielle Giroux\, this recurring gathering will feature a different short form VR film in each session. \nFollowing each screening\, the Immersive Story Club will follow an experimental and fluid format: each session aiming to uncover meaningful ways of moving from virtual immersion into discussion and craft rooted in physical world connection and camaraderie. Immersive Story Club is a work in progress\, currently incubating at Gray Area\, and will be conducted in an open format that welcomes participant suggestions. \nEach VR experience presented has travelled around the world to film festivals\, museums and other venues. Now\, many of these creative gems sit hidden on hard drives somewhere while the technology slowly becomes obsolete. As a participant in Immersive Story Club\, you will have the opportunity to view rarely accessed artworks that are notoriously resistant to conservation. Through Giroux’s selection of films\, the group will explore topics like censorship\, shared memory\, personal identity\, nostalgia\, and shifting social perspectives. \nCome ask WHY VR with us. Join in for a virtual story and stick around for conversation\, collaging\, and more! \nThere will be tea.

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: People's Circus Theatre presents "The Unfinished Work of Camille Claudel"
DESCRIPTION:Camille Claudel was an Impressionist sculptor in France at the turn of the century. She defied expectations of women at the time by creating dynamic pieces that shocked the art establishment. Single-handedly\, Camille manipulated marble into artworks that tenderly exposed the full range of her subjects’ humanity. She was a visionary\, but Claudel’s genius came at a price. \nPeople’s Circus Theatre blends circus\, dance\, and physical theatre to tell Camille’s story. In this stunning homage\, Claudel’s art is brought to life through movement. The Unfinished Work of Camille Claudel is a passionate revelation of art in the face of adversity. \nLearn more about People’s Circus Theatre and The Unfinished Work of Camille Claudel at peoplescircustheatre.org/camille-claudel.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Scissor Cinema: The Waterlemon Woman and Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:Brava Presents is proud to announce our very first edition of ‘Scissor Cinema: A Double Feature’! Please join us in celebrating the beginning of Pride Month on June 5th and come back June 6th where Brava will screen two iconic Sapphic films. \nJune 5th: The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye\nThe Watermelon Woman (1996) is a 1996 American romantic drama-comedy film written\, directed\, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The first feature film directed by a Black lesbian\, it stars Dunye as Cheryl\, a young Black lesbian working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards\, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy” roles to which Black actresses were relegated during the period. \nJune 6th: Saving Face by Alice Wu\nSaving Face (2004) Wil is a lesbian\, but she does not dare tell her widowed mother\, Hwei-lan\, or her very traditional grandparents. She’s shocked\, however\, to find out she’s not the only one in her family with romantic secrets when she learns that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant. Unwilling to reveal who the father is\, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents’ home and must move in with Wil\, which puts a strain on Wil’s budding relationship with openly gay Vivian. \nThis screening is in collaboration with Less Than Half Pictures\, our in-house Production Team\, where 2/4 of it’s founders are Lesbian filmmakers. \nPlease join us for two nights of fun\, themed drinks\, laughter\, and community. See you there!

Her bold visual language of labor\, struggle\, and social justice is presented alongside works from 40+ artists responding to a call from Espacio Zapata based in Oaxaca — continuing Templeton’s commitment to art in service of the people.\nPart Two of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘖 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 features Anna Colom’s 𝘎𝘢𝘺 𝘕𝘰𝘸\, 𝘎𝘢𝘺 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 and Nayelli Rosas’ 𝘈𝘮𝘰𝘳 𝘕𝘰 𝘉𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰\, two deeply personal projects exploring queer Latine identity\, community\, love\, healing\, and self-expression. Through portraiture\, tattoo design\, interviews\, and storytelling\, these works create space for visibility\, bodily autonomy\, gender affirmation\, and belonging.\nTogether\, these exhibitions remind us that art is resistance\, empowerment\, and a living archive of our community.

SUMMARY:500 Capp Street: Amitié: Film and Video Program
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with its current exhibition Amitié: Joyce Burstein & Léonie Guyer\, 500 Capp Street is pleased to present a program of films and videos selected by the artists in the spirit of David Ireland’s conceptual practice. Burstein and Guyer’s choices comprise works which have a relationship to Ireland’s aesthetic and ethos of allowing a thing to be beautiful and meaningful in itself—using economy of means\, found materials and phenomena. These works share a regard for humble yet transformative actions constructed with rigor\, extraordinary attentiveness\, and subtle humor. \nThe program opens with the premiere of two short videos of David Ireland in action\, made by Rebeca Bollinger when she was his student at the San Francisco Art Institute\, and newly edited. Rarely screened works of the Bay Area Conceptual Art movement—which arose in the late 1960s and flourished in the 1970s—will be shown along with key works made by artists active in New York and elsewhere during this vibrant period. \nThe program expands on the exhibition’s leitmotif of Amitié\, (friendship)\, a term used by Proust in recognition of the profound connections we apprehend between things. \nRSVP https://events.humanitix.com/amitie-film-and-video-program

SUMMARY:Moth Belly Gallery: Joel Hernandez - At Least We're Damned Together (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 6\, 2026\, Moth Belly Gallery presents At Least We’re Damned Together\, a solo exhibition of new sculptural artwork by San Francisco based artist Joel Hernandez. The show marks Hernandez’s most personal body of work to date\, an exploration of the power of emotional kinship in a turbulent time defined by societal strife. \nAbout the Exhibition\nAt Least We’re Damned Together gathers a new collection of paper-mache sculptures and masks made over the past year\, a period in which Hernandez found himself\, like many\, navigating waves of grief\, anger\, joy\, and disbelief all in quick succession. The exhibition’s title is both revelation and acceptance\, when finding yourself in the worst case scenario seeing that you’re not alone in those feelings provides space for stronger emotional kinship. A refusal to be crushed by the weight of it all\, and an insistence that the only way through is together.\nHernandez has spent more than a decade building a visual language around the mask\, not as concealment but as revelation. His handcrafted figures\, created with one piece of paper at a time\, draw on the iconography of Mexican folk art while addressing the specific weight of being a Gay Mexican-American Immigrant during this time in America.\nThe work doesn’t promise resolution. What it offers instead is company\, a room full of figures in the midst of those feelings and the relief that comes from finding strength in that collective experience. \nArtist Statement\nI like to think that there are better days ahead\, but I’m also too aware of the difficult shared emotions we’re all going through given the chaotic times in which we live. Anger and despair can sometimes feel like waves crashing over our heads\, and at the same time\, joy and love can feel equally strong and important in these moments. In a time that feels like we’re facing crisis after crisis alone\, I want people to know we are experiencing this together\, and to hold on to loved ones. All we have is each other. These feelings can come like waves that scatter us throughout the vast ocean\, or wash us back to shore. The title of this show “At Least We’re Damned Together” is not a surrender to a dark inevitable\, but an exploration of finding silver linings through difficult times.\nJoel Hernandez \nAbout the Artist\nJoel Hernandez is a San Francisco based sculptor whose practice centers on the mask as metaphor\, an object of revelation\, ritual\, and belonging. Drawing on his experience as a gay Mexican-American\, Hernandez constructs handcrafted paper-mache figures that address tribalism\, pageantry\, and the everyday struggles of daily life. His work synthesizes Mexican folk art traditions with contemporary figuration\, producing objects that are simultaneously intimate and communal.\nHernandez’s work has been exhibited at the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago)\, Museo de las Américas (Denver)\, and La Luz de Jesús Gallery (Los Angeles). He has been featured twice in The New York Times Style Magazine\, including the Mexico edition’s profile “The Art of Fragility\,” as well as in California Home and Design and international publications in Japan and France.\n“Masks that do not conceal but reveal\, creatures that carry the innocence of play and the melancholy of memory.”\nThe New York Times Style Magazine\, Mexico Edition \nAbout Moth Belly Gallery\nMoth Belly is an artist owned and operated gallery\, community event space\, and arts media platform based in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. Started by local artists John Vochatzer and KT Seibert\, it was founded in the fall of 2020 and has been open to the public with monthly exhibits and more since October of 2021.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Flavors of Southeast Asia: Laksa
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the spicy and soul-warming world of laksa. If you’re new to laksa\, it is a spicy noodle dish in Southeast Asia. However\, there are as many varieties of laksa as there are states in Malaysia. \nThis annual class by Chef Linda is a deep exploration of one of Southeast Asia’s most beloved dishes—where no two bowls are ever quite the same – and a time to have fun with the quintessential flavors of laksa. We will build foundational techniques of making spice paste and coaxing the flavors out while balancing sour\, spicy\, and umami elements. You will understand the cultural influences—Malay\, Chinese\, Peranakan\, and Thai—that shape each bowl. \nLinda chose four recipes for our spice-filled adventure. We have two classic recipes\, accompanied by a few contemporary variations. It’s Laksapalooza! \nMENU \nLaksa Buffalo Wings \nLaksa Johor – Fish Laksa with Pineapple\, Cucumber and Spaghetti \nNyonya Laksa – Seafood and Chicken Creamy Laksa \nLaksa Cookies
