SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: SYNC - Rafael Lozano-Hemmer & Eli Keszler
DESCRIPTION:SYNC Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Eli Keszler \n \nFor two nights only on April 20 and 21\, join us for SYNC\, an audiovisual collaboration between Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and percussionist\, composer\, and artist\, Eli Keszler\, originally commissioned by Pace Live.\nCome experience this special performance amid Lozano-Hemmer’s groundbreaking exhibition TECHS-MECHS\, while supporting Gray Area’s year of ACCESS programming. \nThe evening will open with an artist talk from Lozano-Hemmer\, followed by “Sync”\, an audiovisual collaboration between Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Eli Keszler\, originally commissioned by PACE Live.\nA multi-instrumentalist and visual artist\, Eli Keszler has previously worked with Kevin Beasley\, Oneohtrix Point Never\, Skrillex\, and more. For “Sync”\, Keszler will activate Lozano-Hemmer’s immersive installation “Pulse Topology” with his distinctive drumming style\, creating “a morphing geography of light.” Keszler’s performances at Gray Area can be understood as “Beat Minimalism” for the 21st century.\nMaking its west coast premiere as part of TECHS-MECHS\, “Pulse Topology” is a mesmerizing work composed of 3\,000 suspended lightbulbs that glimmer in tune with the heartbeats of different participants from the past. Pulse sensors detect and record new heartbeats\, which replace the oldest ones\, creating a memento mori. \n𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥\nRafael Lozano-Hemmer: TECHS-MECHS is a tribute to the rich Mexican technological cultural history\, and a celebration of San Francisco’s Mission District— a historic center of the city’s Latinx and Mexican-American communities. Since opening two weeks ago\, 26% of attendees have been local residents of the Mission District who received free admission through our community program. \n𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐒 \n𝐄𝐥𝐢 𝐊𝐞𝐬𝐳𝐥𝐞𝐫\nA multi-instrumentalist\, Eli Keszler has released numerous solo albums\, his most recent being ICONS (2021\, LuckyMe)\, and presented his work at The Kitchen in New York; Lincoln Center\, the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge\, Massachusetts; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, and other spaces around the world. He has previously worked with Kevin Beasley\, Oneohtrix Point Never\, Skrillex\, and many more artists. \n𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐋𝐨𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐨-𝐇𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫\nRafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. In 1989 he received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. A media artist working at the intersection of architecture and performance art\, Lozano-Hemmer creates platforms for public participation using technologies such as robotic lights\, digital fountains\, computerized surveillance\, media walls\, and telematic networks. Inspired by phantasmagoria\, carnival\, and animatronics\, his light and shadow works are “antimonuments for alien agency”.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Five Ingredients: Cantonese - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nIn the “Five Ingredients” series\, our aim is to make Asian recipes accessible to anyone intimidated by unknown ingredients\, a lack of storage\, or a lack of time. In this class\, we will make some comforting dishes from Linda’s Cantonese repertoire of recipes – simplified to reduce complexity\, but still full in flavor! Cantonese cuisine is the cuisine of the Guangdong province of China\, particularly the provincial capital Guangzhou\, and the surrounding regions in the Pearl River Delta including Hong Kong and Macau. The popularity of this cuisine outside of China is due to the widespread influence of Cantonese emigrants. The cuisine is known for mild\, fresh\, and slightly sweet flavors\, where the ingredients’ natural flavors are given center stage. Deep frying\, braising\, stir frying\, and steaming are key techniques covered in this class\, plus how to cook rice without a rice cooker! \nYou will use a pantry of salt\, sugar\, sesame\, soy sauce\, and a high-heat neutral oil (ex. grapeseed\, rice bran) and add to it no more than 5 other ingredients per recipe. If you’re looking for new weeknight meal ideas or feel overwhelmed by the breadth of Asian pantry ingredients and don’t know where to start\, join us. Let’s cook classic Cantonese dishes together! \nMENU \nSalt & Pepper Shrimp with Wok Salt \nSoy Sauce Chicken with Ginger Scallion Sauce \nPea Shoots with Garlic \nSteamed Minced Pork with 3 Kinds of Eggs \nAlmond Mungbean Cookie \nPerfect Stovetop Rice \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Shellfish\, Egg\, Soy\, Tree Nuts\, Peanuts\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nLinda Tay Esposito is a teaching chef whose food represents a tribute and a commitment to the authenticity of the cuisines of the Pacific Rim. For the last 18 years\, Linda has shared her passion and knowledge of East and Southeast Asian cuisines in the Bay Area by teaching at many notable cooking schools in the Bay Area. An all around food professional\, Linda expanded the distribution for artisan tofu maker\, Hodo Soy\, and led the development of La Cocina’s municipal marketplace\, where she uses food as a creative approach to economic development. Linda’s specialties include Malaysian cuisine\, Chinese cuisine\, various Southeast Asian cuisines\, and private classes and dinners at 18 Reasons.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Queering Psychedelics II
DESCRIPTION:$250 – $350 \nThis 2-day conference is part of Chacruna’s Women\, Gender Diversity\, and Sexual Minorities speaker series. It highlights the voices of queer visionaries within the psychedelic community as well as examines the history of psychedelics from queer and non-binary perspectives. As the so-called psychedelic renaissance reaches a pivotal moment of mainstream interest and regulatory legitimacy\, it is vital that traditionally under-represented communities share a seat at the table and have their voices heard so as to ensure access to all the benefits that psychedelics and plant medicine offer. Additionally\, it is vital that queer spaces be established for exploring the unique needs\, gifts\, and strengths that LGBTQI communities bring to psychedelics and psychedelic medicine.

Through laughter and tears\, he compares and contrasts trials of single parenting in the 1970s and the dawn of the 21st century as he tries to answer the question…What does it truly mean to be a father?\nAbout the Performer & Creative Team \nBrian Copeland (performer/writer) has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. \nIn 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. \nIt’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. The play is currently in development with Rob Reiner’s Castlerock Entertainment for television. \nCopeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, THE SCION\, and THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW with Charlie Varon. \nHe has also appeared in the films THE BUCKET LIST and the Marvel’s VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. \nDavid Ford (director) has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, the dean of solo performance\, and the solo performers’ best friend; a week rarely goes by when residents of the Bay Area can not enjoy one of his productions. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\, Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud Second Time Around (the latest in Charlie and David’s twenty-five year partnership)\, Geoff Hoyle’s Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\, all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows including the longest running solo show in the Bay Area\, Not A Genuine Black Man. Other work of note includes\, with storyteller-holy-man Ron Jones and Michael Rice\, a mentally disabled performer\, Say Ray. He also worked with Bill Talen on the original creation of Reverend Billy\, the Obie award-winning theater/political action piece. \nDavid’s work has been seen regionally at the Public Theatre\, Second Stage\, St. Clement’s\, Dixon Place\, One Dream Theatre and Theatre for the New City (NY)\, Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington DC).

SUMMARY:ATA: Other Cinema: WAR REFUGEES
DESCRIPTION:THREE MINUTES: A LENGTHENING + SACHS’ ALL ELSE FAILED \nA book release evening that focuses on the victims of war and those who struggle to provide humanitarian care. Dana Sachs is an old neighbor of ours\, who has published some half-dozen books\, and we are honored that we can launch this brand new one with her in person! Her brief reading/Q&A is followed by Elabdi/Graversen‘s Ghosts of Moria\, a finely made doc on a burnt down Syrian refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Though the hour-plus anchor of the show is the Bay Area debut of Bianca Stigter‘s Three Minutes\, an utterly astonishing filmic achievement—almost a materialistic approach to the medium that stretches out the duration of a single 100′ roll of 16mm to a wide and deep history\, tracing back very many individual human stories. A whole world is revealed through interviews\, narration\, music\, and jaw-dropping post-production—an entire milieu that was surely no more within a year of the 1938 filming. Steve McQueen and Helena Bonham Carter were among the principals who oversaw the “deconstruction” of this home movie\, shot by a Polish-American tourist visiting relatives in East Europe\, just before hostilities broke out. Some 3000 of the town’s inhabitants were Jewish\, and only six survived the War. $8-100\, benefiting Dana‘s Humanity Now.
