He has worked in the theater and in film/video as an actor\, director\, playwright\, producer\, and designer. He helped create and manage two landmark performance venues: Valencia Rose Cabaret in the 1980s and Josie’s Cabaret & Juice Joint in the 1990s.More recent work includes plays at the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Park Theater in Danville\, CA. Collaborating with long-term friends Dirk Alphin and Dennis Hasty in Reciprocating Pumps is a pleasure. \nSpencer Jorgensen (Dennis) is originally from Texas\, but now resides in San Francisco. A student of theater\, he has stepped into acting after working behind the scenes for the better part of his career. Having stage managed and production managed several plays in college at Dartmouth and at his time at ACT as a Fellow\, Spencer now works in technology but has his heart in the arts. \nDennis Hasty (Zack) trained at the prestigious Jean Shelton Acting School\, and did summer workshops with the legendary Stella Adler. A former competitive gymnast and Chippendale’s dancer\, Dennis was last seen locally at The Curran Theater in “The Real Live Brady Bunch”\, as well as his recurring role of Spiderman at several children’s birthday parties. \nDenise Tyrrell (Norma) re-entered the theatrical world after a public affairs and executive career spanning thirty+ years. Local credits include Will Eno’s The Realistic Jones by Too Soon Old Productions\, Macbeth at Salesforce Park by Rhinoceros Theatre\, Part of Me at the Phoenix Theatre\, Edward Albee’s Occupant at the Embarcadero also by Too Soon Old Productions and Caryl Churchill’s Here We go for Anton’s Well Theatre Company in Berkeley. SUMMARY:ODC Theater: ODC/Dance presents: Summer Sampler
DESCRIPTION:Savor the sweetness of summer with a taste of ODC/Dance. Experience the newly premiered and critically acclaimed Collision\, Collapse and a Coda by Founding Artistic Director Brenda Way\, ODC/Dance Associate Choreographer Kimi Okada and Way’s deeply intimate May’s Letters\, as well as new works premiered by guest choreographers Dexandro Montalvo and Sonya Delwaide. \nDiscounted Tickets\nHave a night out with friends at Summer Sampler! ODC is offering a group discount of 10% off orders of 6+ tickets. Use code ‘ODC10’ at checkout. \nAbout the Work \nCollision\, Collapse and a Coda by Brenda Way\nCollision\, Collapse and a Coda delivers a rousing response to the daily barrage of news\, disasters and disruptive events\, and the solace we find in the care and affection of intimate relationships. Collision\, Collapse and a Coda premiered at ODC/Dance presents: Dance Downtown 2023 and is hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as work that “brims with movement that marries ferocity to precision.” \nMay’s Letters by Kimi Okada and Brenda Way\nMay’s Letters\, choreographed by ODC/Dance Associate Choreographer Kimi Okada and ODC Founding Artistic Director Brenda Way\, is an intimate portrayal of Okada’s parent’s life as newlyweds. They were detained in a Japanese American incarceration camp\, where Okada’s mother\, May\, wrote letters that are read aloud as part of the score. Through this work\, Okada conveys a deeply personal narrative filled with tales of bleak conditions\, indomitable spirit\, and also love\, humor\, and grace.\n Of May’s Letters Okada says\, “Her letters surface the timely issue of how we cope with the injustices of racism and the confines of imprisonment. While the piece explores the question of how one responds to a national betrayal\, it is ultimately about the power of community that allows each person to find a path to resilience.” \nInterconnected Humanity by Dexandro Montalvo\nDexandro Montalvo’s newest work\, premiering at this year’s Summer Sampler\, is a sextet set to ambient music by film score composer Cliff Martinez. The work\, in Montalvo’s words\, “explores the intricate interplay of human relationships with an eye to the forces that bring people together or cause them to drift apart.” \nC’est frette! by Sonya Delwaide\nSonya Delwaide’s newest work\, premiering at this year’s Summer Sampler\, is a sextet set to Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor. “With a playful nod to San Francisco’s famously cold summers\, the piece asks audiences to experience winter in Québec while right in the middle of summer\,” said Delwaide. “Wherever you go\, people love to talk about the weather. In its hardships and unpredictability\, it offers a shared platform for human connection.”

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Carne trémula [Live Flesh]
DESCRIPTION:Taut and torrid\, Live Flesh delivers everything you could possibly want from a 90s erotic thriller: smoldering glances\, smoking guns and heaps of high-class carnality. Approaching Dostoevsky by way of Eszterhas\, Almodóvar sharpens a paperback tale of infidelity and revenge into a something both poetic and political. Pared-down by its director’s florid standards\, Live Flesh still surprises at every turn – nowhere more vividly than in Javier Bardem’s portrayal of David\, a cop-turned-Paralympian trying to save his marriage after the assailant whose bullet put him in a wheelchair is released from prison. Intense\, athletic and uncontainable\, Bardem pushes Almodóvar to new kinetic and expressive heights\, yielding some of the director’s most viscerally thrilling sequences to date. While its technique and emotional depth paved the way for the masterpieces to come\, Live Flesh also satisfies a more basic moviegoing lust – for unadulterated popcorn.

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Werckmeister Harmonies
DESCRIPTION:One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far\, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual\, philosophical\, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai\, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village\, where\, one day\, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy\, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens\, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes\, engraved in ghostly black and white\, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty. \nPart of the Three in the Key of Tarr series. \nA film by Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky. With Lars Rudolph\, Peter Fitz\, Hanna Schygulla\, János Derzsi\, Đoko Rosić\, Tamás Wichmann\, Péter Dobai\, Ferenc Kállai & Mihály. B&W. 1.66:1. DCP.. 145 mins.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Sátántangó
DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest achievements in recent art house cinema and a seminal work of “slow cinema\,” Sátántangó\, based on the book by László Krasznahorkai\, follows members of a small\, defunct agricultural collective living in a post-apocalyptic landscape after the fall of Communism who\, on the heels of a large financial windfall\, set out to leave their village. As a few of the villagers secretly conspire to take off with all of the earnings for themselves\, a mysterious character\, long thought dead\, returns to the village\, altering the course of everyone’s lives forever. \nShot in stunning black-and-white by Gábor Medvigy and filled with exquisitely composed and lyrical long takes\, Sátántangó unfolds in twelve distinct movements\, alternating forwards and backwards in time\, echoing the structure of a tango dance. Tarr’s vision\, aided by longtime partner and collaborator Ágnes Hranitzky\, is enthralling and his portrayal of a rural Hungary beset by boozy dance parties\, treachery\, and near-perpetual rainfall is both transfixing and uncompromising. Sátántangó has been justly lauded by critics and audiences as a masterpiece and inspired none other than Susan Sontag to proclaim that she would be “glad to see it every year for the rest of [her] life”. \nPart of the Three in the Key of Tarr series. Presented with 2 intermissions. \nSection 1 (chapters 1-3) = 2h 17m\n15 minute break\nSection 2 (chapters 4-6) = 2h 4m\n25 minute break\nSection 3 (chapters 7-12) = 2h 57m \nSátántangó was restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative by Arbelos in collaboration with The Hungarian Filmlab. \n#36 on the Sight & Sound / BFI’s Critic’s Poll of the 100 Greatest Films Ever Made.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Earth Mama
DESCRIPTION:Gia is a young mother fighting for her children. Her son and daughter are in foster care\, and now her unborn child could also be taken away. Struggling to work enough hours with court-mandated classes\, she’s barely making ends meet. Gia loves her children unconditionally\, but how will she give them the future they deserve? \nSavanah Leaf’s directorial feature debut is an intimate depiction of a mother’s fear and love. Leaf’s elegant visual language interjects lush visions of hope and visceral manifestations of Gia’s deepest fears into her everyday life. Moving performances root the film in authenticity\, including that of newcomer Tia Nomore\, whose Gia is tender\, conflicted\, and layered. The warm texture of the film envelops us in Gia’s reality\, while a knowing score smiles at the beauty of everyday moments. \nBetween the backdrops of Gia’s counseling classes and portrait studio job\, Leaf crafts a story that redefines perspectives and asks us to bear witness — to vulnerability and the desire to be seen. Leaf’s permeating vision brings fullness and complexity to Gia\, reclaiming her humanity and honoring the different forms love can take. – Sundance. \nWritten & directed by Savanah Leaf. With Tia Nomore\, Erika Alexander\, Doechii\, Sharon Duncan-brewster\, Dominic Fike & Bokeem Woodbine.

DESCRIPTION:The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) is a national legal organization committed to advancing the human and civil rights of the lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer community through litigation\, public policy advocacy\, and public education. Since being founded more than 45 years ago\, NCLR has maintained a longstanding commitment to racial and economic justice and the LGBTQ community’s most vulnerable. \nIn 2023\, we have seen nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ laws – most targeting transgender kids – introduced in state legislatures around the country. Technology reporter\, columnist\, and podcasting queen Kara Swisher will sit down with NCLR Executive Director Imani Rupert-Gordon (she/her) to discuss the state of the LGBTQ movement in 2023\, the cutting-edge legal work NCLR is taking part in to overturn these discriminatory laws\, and the intersectional approach the entire LGBTQ community can use to come together and protect transgender youth and the most vulnerable in our community. \nThis is a conversation not to be missed! \nWe will also be hosting a special VIP pre-reception with Kara Swisher \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Inland Empire
DESCRIPTION:David Lynch’s labyrinthine Hollyweird freakout—his last feature to date—is his most uncompromising creation: a fugue-state trawl through the darkest realms of the subconscious that pushes his straight-from-the-id imagery and sinister dream logic to their extremes. When she accepts a role in a supposedly cursed production\, a movie actor on the verge of a comeback (Laura Dern\, in a fearless performance) finds herself tumbling down a series of increasingly disturbing rabbit holes (complete with literal rabbits) that lead her from the glittering heights of Tinseltown to the depths of human depravity. In his first feature shot on digital video\, Lynch makes visionary use of the medium’s smudged textures and murky chiaroscuro to enhance the hallucinatory\, nightmarish quality of what may be his magnum opus. \nScreening in conjunction with Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary LYNCH/OZ\, The Wizard of Oz (35mm) and a number of Lynch’s most haunting films as part of this Summer’s You’re Not In Kansas Anymore series.
