SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Werckmeister Harmonies
DESCRIPTION:One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far\, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual\, philosophical\, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai\, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village\, where\, one day\, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy\, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens\, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes\, engraved in ghostly black and white\, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty. \nPart of the Three in the Key of Tarr series. \nA film by Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky. With Lars Rudolph\, Peter Fitz\, Hanna Schygulla\, János Derzsi\, Đoko Rosić\, Tamás Wichmann\, Péter Dobai\, Ferenc Kállai & Mihály. B&W. 1.66:1. DCP.. 145 mins.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Sátántangó
DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest achievements in recent art house cinema and a seminal work of “slow cinema\,” Sátántangó\, based on the book by László Krasznahorkai\, follows members of a small\, defunct agricultural collective living in a post-apocalyptic landscape after the fall of Communism who\, on the heels of a large financial windfall\, set out to leave their village. As a few of the villagers secretly conspire to take off with all of the earnings for themselves\, a mysterious character\, long thought dead\, returns to the village\, altering the course of everyone’s lives forever. \nShot in stunning black-and-white by Gábor Medvigy and filled with exquisitely composed and lyrical long takes\, Sátántangó unfolds in twelve distinct movements\, alternating forwards and backwards in time\, echoing the structure of a tango dance. Tarr’s vision\, aided by longtime partner and collaborator Ágnes Hranitzky\, is enthralling and his portrayal of a rural Hungary beset by boozy dance parties\, treachery\, and near-perpetual rainfall is both transfixing and uncompromising. Sátántangó has been justly lauded by critics and audiences as a masterpiece and inspired none other than Susan Sontag to proclaim that she would be “glad to see it every year for the rest of [her] life”. \nPart of the Three in the Key of Tarr series. Presented with 2 intermissions. \nSection 1 (chapters 1-3) = 2h 17m\n15 minute break\nSection 2 (chapters 4-6) = 2h 4m\n25 minute break\nSection 3 (chapters 7-12) = 2h 57m \nSátántangó was restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative by Arbelos in collaboration with The Hungarian Filmlab. \n#36 on the Sight & Sound / BFI’s Critic’s Poll of the 100 Greatest Films Ever Made.

SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: In This House We Are All Buried Alive (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening reception of Paola de la Calle’s In This House We Are All Buried Alive on Friday\, July 28\, 7:30–10:00 PM PST. \nDrawing inspiration from Colombian poet María Mercedes Carranza’s piece “La Patria” (“The Motherland”)\, De la Calle threads together personal and collective memory to repair the ruptures of historical amnesia. \nThrough her multidisciplinary practice\, her debut solo exhibition examines the relationship between power and memory. What becomes the memory of a culture? Of a family? Who benefits when memories are forgotten? \nStay tuned for upcoming announcements! \nAbout Paola de la Calle \nPaola de la Calle is a Colombian-American multidisciplinary artist whose work examines home\, identity\, borders\, and nostalgia through the use of textiles\, printmaking\, and sculpture. In her practice\, De la Calle combines photographs sourced from family albums and found images which she prints on textiles\, as well as poetic texts\, paintings made with coffee instead of paint\, and found objects\, to mine the aesthetics of nostalgia and examine the socio-political relationship between the United States and Colombia. \nShe is a graduate of the New York Foundation of the Arts Immigrant Artist Program in 2019 and the lead artist for the Caravan for the Children Campaign as part of her residency with Galeria de la Raza in 2020. She’s a KALA Fellowship Award recipient and currently Artist-in-Residence at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn\, NY. She’s been featured on Hyperallergic’s “A View from the Easel”\, NPR\, The Boston Art Review\, and VOGUE among others. \nVisit Paola de la Calle’s website to learn more: http://www.paoladelacalle.com/

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Summer Fruit Tree Pruning
DESCRIPTION:Fruit trees require year-round care\, and summer pruning is critical to their health. Summer pruning allows air and light to reach fruits and lower branches\, controls growth on vigorous trees\, helps direct a tree’s shape\, and is an opportunity to remove dead\, damaged\, and dying wood. Our expert instructors will teach general pruning techniques\, discuss the differences between summer and winter pruning\, and lead a hands-on demonstration so you can learn which cuts will keep your trees healthy and productive. \nFollowing the workshop\, you can put your newfound skills to use! Feel free to bring a lunch and eat with GFE staff and volunteers\, and then at 1pm\, join a group of fellow workshop participants and others from the GFE community to prune our orchard trees. \nYour expert instructors Jamie Chan and Blas Herrera are natives of San Francisco. They tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls\, complete with honey bees\, chickens\, greenhouse\, mini-orchard\, and vegetables. Blas has a degree in environmental studies\, a certificate in sustainable design from the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and currently is assistant director of education at CuriOdyssey\, Zoo and Science Museum. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in education from SF State University. She is a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and is currently director of programs at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park (which includes the SF Botanical Garden\, Conservatory of Flowers\, and Japanese Tea Garden). In their free time\, you can find them volunteering at their local community greenspace Sisterhood Gardens and running their garden education company @FogCityGardener. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please bring your own gardening gloves for possible hands-on activities.\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.
