SUMMARY:Manny’s: The State of San Francisco Comic Shops
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that San Francisco is home to North America’s very first comic book store! Gary Arlington started the San Francisco Comic Book Company in the Mission in 1968. Gary’s ‘Church of the Underground Comix’ took off and led the way for the independent comic book industry. \nIn 1970 Ron Turner founded Last Gasp\, and started publishing comics by the artists and friends he met at Gary Arlignton’s shop. For 50 years\, he’s published subversive\, counter-culture and low-brow comics and books\, working with many of the best artists of the times and earning much acclaim over the years. \nIn 1989 Brian Hibbs at the age of 21 opened Comix Experience on Divisadero with focus on graphic novels and comics as an art form. Over the decades Brian has been a strong advocate for comic retailers through his column Tilting at Windmills\, and famously sued Marvel and won! \nIn 2009\, Leef Smith opened Mission: Comics & Art with the aim of making reading comics more accessible to the wider community and highlighting the full breadth of the world of comics and graphic novels. \nToday\, superheroes dominate our movie screens and pop culture. Comics and graphic novels are a huge part of modern day entertainment; and yet\, there are fewer comic book stores in San Francisco than ever before. Join Ron Turner\, Brian Hibs and Leef Smith for an animated conversation about the history of selling comics in San Francisco and the challenges and opportunities for the future. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS \nRon Turn is the founder of Last Gasp of San Francisco\, one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world. He’s been an outspoken supporter of artists\, writers\, and various misfits for over five decades. \nRon grew up in California’s central valley in the 1940s and ’50s\, moving between small dusty farm towns around Fresno. His publishing roots began in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. After serving as one of the first thousand Peace Corps volunteers\, he came back from Sri Lanka to Fresno for three years before coming to SF in ’67 for grad school in Experimental Psychology and became deeply immersed in the free speech\, civil rights\, and student protest movements. \nIn 1970\, Ron produced the first Last Gasp publication – an underground comic book entitled Slow Death Funnies\, created as a benefit for a Berkeley ecology center. Hundreds of genre-defining comic books were soon to follow\, including Zap Comix\, Weirdo Comix (edited by Robert Crumb)\, Slow Death\, Tales Of The Leather Nun\, Amputee Love\, Wimmen’s Comix\, Binky Brown Meets The Holy Virgin Mary\, Horny Biker Sluts\, and many more. Last Gasp books have been glowingly reviewed in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, Playboy magazine\, Publishers Weekly\, Library Journal\, School Library Journal\, Juxtapoz magazine\, the Guardian\, Hi-Fructose magazine\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Austin Chronicle\, American Book Review\, and the Los Angeles Times. Last Gasp was named “Best Local Publisher” in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2017 and 2018 (and maybe a few in between) by readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. \nBrian Hibbs has owned and operated Comix Experience in San Francisco for over 33 years\, was a founding member of the Board of Directors of ComicsPRO\, has sat on the Board of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund\, and has been an Eisner Award judge. Born in Boone County\, Missouri\, pre-teen years spent in Brooklyn\, New York\, Brian still somehow vainly believes that he’s actually a San Franciscan. Must be the hair. \nBrian opened Comix Experience at the ridiculously young age of 21\, on April Fool’s Day\, 1989. Brian lives with his luscious wife\, Tzipora\, and his son\, Ben\, in sunny Noe Valley. Since starting his column\, Tilting At Windmills in 1991\, Hibbs has been a de facto spokesperson for comic book retailers\, sharing his opinions on comics retail news and other industry headlines. He’s passionate about comics\, opinionated\, yes\, but he’s also a business man and the only ‘business’ he’s ever worked in\, comics. in 2015 Brian started the Graphic Novel Club which offers graphic novel fans the chance to receive a “single best brand new graphic novel\,” selected each month by employees of Comix Experience. \nLeef Smith grew up in ’70s hippy San Francisco with hand-made clothes\, a vegetarian diet and progressive politics\, as well as Legos\, Star Wars\, and comic books\, starting with Tintin. Later he was drawn into contemporary mainstream comics by the X-Men and Crisis on Infinite Earths\, and the rich complexity they offered. Growing up in the rich diversity of San Francisco led to him getting a degree in sociology from UCSC. He later spent a few years living in one of the art districts of Seoul\, Korea for a few years and traveling throughout Asia. \nIn 1997\, Leef returned to San Francisco and got swept into the Dot Com bubble and the web world\, spending several years as the webmaster for Visa’s intranet. This however did not extinguish his passion for the arts and setting his own sail\, and the dreams of his next career. An unforeseen layoff in the fall of ’08 provide that kick\, and he was inspired by his Buddhist practice\, Burning Man and the ideas of localized\, sustainable business practices\, to open his own art gallery combined with a comic book shop and “Mission: Comics & Art” was born.

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:A Pre-recorded Q&A with BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin\nimmediately follows the film. \n“The writer-director’s use of colour 16mm\, his (now-famous) 1970s Bolex clockwork camera\, and post-production sound anoint Enys Men as the Kernowek equivalent of such classic English folk horrors as The Wicker Man.” ~ Tara Brady\, Irish Times \n“Are its cultish mysteries for everyone? Undoubtedly not. But if there’s a place in your heart for dark\, folky mind-benders that plug into the cosmic energy of remote\, oceanic terrain\, you should take a trip across Jenkin’s freaky landscape asap.” ~ Philip De Semlyen\, Time Out \nA wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace\, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Spirited Away
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature\, Hayao Miyazaki’s wondrous fantasy adventure is a dazzling masterpiece from one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animation. \nWandering through an abandoned carnival site\, 10-year-old Chichiro is separated from her parents and stumbles into a dreamlike spirit world\, where she is put to work in a bathhouse for the gods\, a place where all kinds of nonhuman beings come to refresh\, relax and recharge. Here she encounters a vast menagerie of impossibly inventive characters — shape-shifting phantoms and spirits\, some friendly\, some less so — and must find the inner strength to outsmart her captors and return to her family. Combining Japanese mythology with Through the Looking Glass-type whimsy\, Spirited Away cemented Miyazaki’s reputation as an icon of inspired animation and wondrous\, lyrical storytelling. \nThis screening of Spirited Away is co-presented by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts\, in conjunction with their exhibition Rituals of Devotion. Highlighting the exhibition’s themes of transformation through labors of love\, this beloved film traverses the thin veil between earthly and spirit worlds in a deeply imaginative exploration of the power of courage and friendship in the face of the unknown.

Through laughter and tears\, he compares and contrasts trials of single parenting in the 1970s and the dawn of the 21st century as he tries to answer the question…What does it truly mean to be a father?\nAbout the Performer & Creative Team \nBrian Copeland (performer/writer) has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. \nIn 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. \nIt’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. The play is currently in development with Rob Reiner’s Castlerock Entertainment for television. \nCopeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, THE SCION\, and THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW with Charlie Varon. \nHe has also appeared in the films THE BUCKET LIST and the Marvel’s VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. \nDavid Ford (director) has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, the dean of solo performance\, and the solo performers’ best friend; a week rarely goes by when residents of the Bay Area can not enjoy one of his productions. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\, Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud Second Time Around (the latest in Charlie and David’s twenty-five year partnership)\, Geoff Hoyle’s Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\, all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows including the longest running solo show in the Bay Area\, Not A Genuine Black Man. Other work of note includes\, with storyteller-holy-man Ron Jones and Michael Rice\, a mentally disabled performer\, Say Ray. He also worked with Bill Talen on the original creation of Reverend Billy\, the Obie award-winning theater/political action piece. \nDavid’s work has been seen regionally at the Public Theatre\, Second Stage\, St. Clement’s\, Dixon Place\, One Dream Theatre and Theatre for the New City (NY)\, Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington DC).

It’s for any adult who has struggled with the seemingly insurmountable climb back to life after losing everything they thought they were and ever wanted.” \nAbout the Performer & Creative Team\nKathryn Keats began developing The Hummingbird as a multicast show at Berkeley Repertory’s The Ground Floor and discovered director David Ford while listening to him being interviewed on KPFA in her car driving home one day. She immediately called The Marsh to work with Ford and The Hummingbird became a solo beat Musical under Ford’s tutelage and direction. It won best solo musical at Marshstream International Fest 2020.\nBefore going into hiding Keats spent her life in theater and showbiz. She is happy to be back writing plays and doing music.\nShe is a Drama Critics Circle Award recipient and is a member of Actors Equity and Sag/Aftra. She is grateful to her family for their love and is ever grateful to Judge Leo Dorado for his ongoing support. \nDavid Ford has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, and the dean of solo performance. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running “Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\,” “Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud\, “Second Time Around\,” Geoff Hoyle’s “Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\,” and all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows\, including the longest-running solo show in the Bay Area\, “Not A Genuine Black Man.” \nKevin Gerzevitz is a professional musician\, composer and teacher based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He frequently performs as jazz organist with B3B4 Organ Jazz Quartet and as a pianist and bandleader with The KG Trio. In his hometown of Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Gerzevitz attended the University of Michigan School of Music\, focusing on piano performance\, jazz studies\, improvisation\, and composition\, while majoring in Music Theory and German. Upon earning his BMA in 1990\, he relocated to the SF Bay Area where he works as a freelance pianist\, composer and teacher. He attended Mills College from 2003 to 2005 to innovate his approach to teaching music\, earning certifications in Levels I\, II\, and III as an Orff Schulwerk instructor. Since 2008\, he has worked as the Music & Movement Specialist at Pacific Primary Orange Sun School in San Francisco. Gerzevitz has scored several independent films and has produced music for advertising\, web\, multimedia and theater. \nMichael Manring is a true visionary and an inimitable stylist who is considered by many to be the world’s leading solo bassist. He has also played with Michael Hedges\, Suzanne Ciani\, Henry Kaiser and John Gorka. Hailed by many as the world’s leading solo bassist\, Michael Manring has been pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for over two decades. While his technical skill and innovations always make an impression\, it’s his ability to communicate on a profound emotional level that most touches listeners. \nAram Avagyan is a composer\, arranger and pianist with a style that ranges from contemporary pop to soul and R&B to music for film\, has been composing original works since the age of 11 in his homeland of Armenia. He attended the renowned Armenian Jazz College and four years later was invited to attend the Armenia State Musical Theatre. Additional accolades for Aram include being awarded the coveted Anoush Award in Los Angeles\, California for the Best Song of the Year\, having numerous international artists perform his songs and having famed singer Lianna attended the International Music Contest in Bulgaria performing Aram’s song “Ari Ari” which won the Grand Prix Title.

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.” \nAbout the Performer\nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:ODC Dance Commons: ODC Dance Jam presents "Through the Repetition"

Chong\, Erin Derstine\, and the dancers themselves.
