SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Spring Sourdough Galettes: Sweet & Savory
DESCRIPTION:Marie’s popular class series is getting an update: a sourdough crust! \nPie crusts can be intimidating. The threat of mushy\, under-cooked undersides and the fear of rolling out concentric dough has kept many people from trying their hand at this pastry classic. Enter the galette. Galettes have all the flavor of pies but are far more low-key. No blind baking and no tedious crust crimping. They are the pastry equivalent of the dinner guest who always knows what to say and gets along with everyone. \nJoin us as we learn how to make beautiful and flaky crusts while saluting the season with fillings that feature the produce of spring. \nBonus: You are welcome to bring in your own container and take home some of Marie’s sourdough starter. \nMENU \nBasic Sourdough Galette Dough \nNew Potatoes & Leek Pesto Galette \nZucchini Blossom & Lemon Ricotta Galette \nBalsamic Roasted Strawberry Galette with Pine Nuts & Tarragon Crème Fraîche; served with Bi-Rite Creamery Vanilla Ice Cream \nSeasonal Salad

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: After Thought
DESCRIPTION:After Thought is a concert that occurs slightly after it has already happened\, where the memories of computers and humans blur into something you won’t quite be able to forget (or fully remember). What exactly does a memory disk remember\, and what does it choose to leave behind? Ten composers interviewed the transistors\, microchips\, and hidden circuitry inside of our electronic devices to ask them about their childhood memories. What is a microchip’s favorite song? What happens when a transistor undergoes a transistential crisis? \nThis concert features works by ten Stanford composers– Anna Golubkova\, Brian Brown\, Calvin Van Zytveld\, Lemon Guo\, Nicholas Shaheed\, Mercedes Montemayor\, Walker Smith\, Mohammad H. Javaheri\, Héloïse Garry\, Kimia Koochakzadeh-Yazdi– with wide-ranging composition and performance practices spanning electronic and acoustic music\, audiovisual compositions and installations\, live coding\, custom-built instruments\, field recordings\, film\, dance and more!

SUMMARY:Z Space: Becoming a Man
DESCRIPTION:Written by P. Carl\nDirected by Lyam B. Gabel \nMay 28 – June 14\, 2026\nZ Space’s Steindler Stage \nFor 50 years\, P. Carl lived as a girl and then a queer woman\, building a career and a loving marriage while waiting to realize himself in full. When he decides to affirm his gender\, his transition puts everything—family\, career\, friendships—at stake. A stage production based on the memoir\, Becoming a Man is a poignant and honest story about the courage and community it takes to become one’s true self and poses the question: “When we change\, can the people we love come with us?” Following a world premiere production at American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University\, P. Carl’s acclaimed story comes to life in its West Coast premiere at Z Space. \nGenerously funded in part by Battery Powered\, The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation\, The Sam Mazza Foundation\, and The Zellerbach Family Foundation.

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Laptopera Productions and 836M co-present The Glance: A Laptopera
DESCRIPTION:The Glance: A Laptopera is an immersive opera that reimagines the Orpheus myth for laptop orchestra and live voices. In this contemporary retelling\, lovers Orphea and Eurydice struggle to build intimacy in a world shaped by constant surveillance\, confronting their own limitations around trust and connection. Using motion-tracking\, looping systems\, and architectural sound instruments\, performers physically shape the music in real time—blending voice\, technology\, and movement. The result is a multisensory performance where sound\, body\, and story intertwine\, inviting audiences into a powerful exploration of surveillance\, control\, care\, and the fragile nature of trust in our technological age. \nCo-produced by Laptopera Productions and 836M\, The Glance was created by composer Anne Hege with collaborators including electronic instrument builders Daniel Iglesia and Curtis Ullerich; vocalists Sidney Chen\, Carmina Escobar\, and Michele Kennedy; art director Kim Anno; lighting designer Mitchell Ost; and choreographer Carrie Ahern.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Plant Propagation with Pam Peirce
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the magic of growing plants in many ways — seeds\, cuttings\, and divisions — from one of SF’s best-known gardeners\, Pam Peirce! \nIn this engaging\, hands-on workshop\, well-known San Francisco gardener Pam Peirce will reveal all the ways you can produce new plants and you’ll get the opportunity to practice some of these techniques yourself! The class will address how to start plants from seed and then will explore other fascinating ways plants reproduce — bulbs\, divisions\, cuttings\, and layering. The plants included as examples will be food crops\, garden ornamentals\, and houseplants. Helpful handouts will be included so you can begin propagating plants on your own! \nPam will be available after the workshop to sign your copy of her book\, Golden Gate Gardening \nInstructor Pam Peirce is a San Francisco-based gardener\, author\, photographer\, and lecturer. Her classic regional gardening book\, Golden Gate Gardening\, in its fourth edition\, includes planting calendars covering microclimates from the foggy coast to inland as far as Walnut Creek and San Jose. Pam taught horticulture at City College of San Francisco for nearly 30 years. Her garden column appears monthly in the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Food + Wine section.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: High Voltage Herbs
DESCRIPTION:Herbs deserve more than garnish status. In this class\, we’ll explore how to use them with confidence\, creativity\, and a lot more range. We’ll start with a tasting of fresh and dried herbs so you can understand how their flavors shift and when each shines. You’ll learn how to wash\, store\, and preserve fresh herbs\, plus how to work with both tender herbs like basil and dill and sturdier ones like rosemary and thyme. We’ll talk about using herbs as major ingredients\, not just finishing touches\, and how to get flavor from both leaves and stems. Along the way\, you’ll make flexible\, modular recipes that help you improvise with what you have and build dishes around herbs instead of treating them as an afterthought. \nMENU \nHerb Oils: Five varieties\, dill\, mint\, basil\, parsley and mixed herb \nHerb Spreads: A tangy salsa verde and a piquant chimichurri \nRoasted Vegetables with Herbs: Two varieties: one roasted with dried herbs and the other roasted and then mixed with fresh herbs. \nFrench Lentil Salad with Mixed Herbs: A vibrant mix of parsley\, dill\, and tarragon with a pomegranate molasses vinaigrette. \nHerb-Infused Poached Seasonal Fruit: Two varieties of herbs\, served with a dollop of Bi-Rite Vanilla ice cream.

Based in Los Angeles\, they first came together around 2006 through a mutual love of underground rave culture. \nTheir first three albums — Drink the Sea\, Love Death Immortality\, and See Without Eyes — took them on a decade-long run of headline tours and massive festival stages across the globe\, leading the charge with high-end\, forward-thinking production. Always determined to evolve\, innovate\, and experiment\, The Glitch Mob have returned to the underground with Ctrl Alt Reality and Give Us Shelter — a love letter to rave culture that launched a new creative era. Since then\, they’ve continued releasing a steady stream of club-focused singles and collaborations\, blending their cinematic roots with the pulse of early warehouse rave energy. \nThis era is deeply intertwined with their newly formed label and community platform\, All The People\, where they curate and champion emerging artists while hosting immersive 360-degree party experiences that fuse sound\, dance\, and community into full-spectrum rave environments. From intimate warehouse takeovers to large-scale audiovisual showcases\, these events function as cultural hubs — not just shows\, but gatherings built around connection\, experimentation\, and shared movement on the dance floor. \nFrom the music to the live experience\, this chapter of The Glitch Mob centers on community\, authenticity\, and immersion — reconnecting directly with the culture that brought them together\, while helping shape the next wave of underground dance music.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Rent Is Too Damn High (And How To Fix It) w/ Supervisor Bilal Mahmood
DESCRIPTION:Get the inside scoop with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood\, moderated by Mission Local editor Joe Eskenazi and catered by Smitten Ice Cream! \nCome join us in the next installment of our series: Scoop with a Supe! We learn the goings-on of SF politics from the supervisors directly\, getting the inside scoop on their policy priorities and confronting complex issues head-on. This time\, we’ll hear from Supervisor Mahmood on his new affordability package\, dropping in June 2026 with a three pronged approach toward making the cost-of-living more affordable in San Francisco. \nThis town hall style event is a great way to connect with the Board of Supervisors and others in your community. Most tickets include the price of a scoop of ice cream built in\, provided by Smitten Ice Cream! And thank you to Mission Local for its partnership and moderation from editor Joe Eskenazi! \n___________________________________________ \nSupervisor Bilal Mahmood represents District 5\, including the Tenderloin\, Hayes Valley\, Lower Haight\, Western Addition\, Fillmore\, Alamo Square\, Japantown\, NoPA\, and Haight Ashbury. \nThe son of Pakistani immigrants\, he is the first South Asian and Muslim-American elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. His career has spanned civil service\, entrepreneurship\, and philanthropy\, working for over a decade to advance innovative solutions to support issues of public safety\, inequality\, and climate justice. \nAfter majoring in Biological Sciences at Stanford University and attaining a Gates Scholarship to attend the University of Cambridge\, he entered public service in the Obama Administration. As a policy analyst in the US Office of Innovation of Entrepreneurship\, he championed policies to support access to capital for small business after the Great Recession. Returning to the Bay Area\, he cofounded a software company in San Francisco to democratize access to artificial intelligence technology for small and medium sized businesses. \nDuring the pandemic\, Bilal started a community impact fund to invest back in San Francisco. He launched philanthropic campaigns that funded guaranteed income programs for restaurant workers\, bystander training for members of the AAPI community\, the Let’s Talk About Us campaign to raise awareness for domestic violence\, and the Upgrade California campaign to advocate for zero emission buildings. He is also an elected member of the SF Democratic County Central Committee\, where he has advanced resolutions calling for innovative solutions to our housing\, fentanyl\, and public safety crises. \nBilal is a lifelong renter\, who currently resides in the Tenderloin. You can often find him working out of the Philz on Golden Gate Ave\, grabbing a bite at Gioia Pizza in Hayes Valley\, going for a weekend run through the Panhandle\, or getting his favorite soft-serve from Cafe Maiko in Japantown. \n___________________________________________ \nSmitten Ice Cream serves the freshest\, creamiest ice cream on the planet. Known for its ultra-smooth texture and craveable flavors\, Smitten keeps things fresh by offering ever-evolving flavors alongside beloved classics. \nFounded in San Francisco by Robyn Sue Fisher\, Smitten began with a simple belief — ice cream tastes better when it’s made fresh. Robyn Sue invented and patented a machine that freezes ice cream in about 90 seconds\, taking it straight to the streets. In 2017\, she brought on Brooke Mosley\, and together they worked together to develop a proprietary ice cream base and continued to craft even more nostalgic\, unexpected flavors and experiences. In 2024\, Robyn handed the reins to Brooke\, ushering in the next chapter of Smitten. \nPraised by Vogue as “the freshest\, if not the best\, ice cream on Earth\,” and featured by Food & Wine\, The Infatuation\, Forbes\, Wired\, and TechCrunch\, Smitten operates popular scoop shops in San Francisco and San Jose\, along with a thriving catering business — and continues to find new ways to surprise and delight. \n___________________________________________ \nSince 2008\, Mission Local\, an independent news site based in the Mission District\, has been focused on high-impact\, enterprise reporting on everything from police reform to corruption at City Hall\, housing\, and the gig economy. Core to our mission is training the next generation of journalists who reflect the diversity of San Francisco. \nWe aspire to be a model of local\, self-sustaining\, fiercely independent news. \nOriginally a project of U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, we struck out on our own in 2014. In the summer of 2018\, we became a fiscally sponsored project. We kept growing and in October 2022\, the IRS granted Mission Local SF (EIN: 88-3177547) status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
