SUMMARY:Manny’s: Mission Local presents: An Evening with Supervisor Dean Preston
DESCRIPTION:Since 2008\, Mission Local\, the Mission’s fiercely independent local news site\, has focused on everything from police reform to corruption at City Hall\, housing\, the gig economy and the people and places that make the Mission a community. \nNow Mission Local is bringing its award winning team of journalists to Manny’s every month to delve into the big issues facing our neighbors and the city as a whole. \nOn Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.\, Mission Local managing editor Joe Eskenazi will sit down with Supervisor Dean Preston\, San Francisco’s most prominent socialist elected official and the bête noire of the city’s angriest wealthy tech online political personalities. \nThere are few politicians with bigger targets on their back than Preston\, who is up for reelection in 2024. Eskenazi will ask him about his record\, his caustic relationship with the mayor\, what’s next for him and the city — and how\, in reality\, Preston and the Democratic Socialists run this town. We saw it on the Internet: It must be true. \nManny’s never turns away anyone for lack of funds. To receive a complementary ticket just email the word “grapefruit” and the title of this event to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Wise Blood
DESCRIPTION:In this acclaimed adaptation of the first novel by legendary Southern writer Flannery O’Connor\, John Huston vividly brings to life her poetic world of American eccentricity. Brad Dourif\, in an impassioned performance\, is Hazel Motes\, who\, fresh out of the army\, attempts to open the first Church Without Christ in the small town of Taulkinham. Populated with inspired performances that seem to spring right from O’Connor’s pages\, Huston’s Wise Blood is an incisive portrait of spirituality and Evangelicalism\, and a faithful\, loving evocation of a writer’s vision.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful and troubled 20-something Donya\, an Afghan translator who used to work with the U.S. government\, has trouble sleeping. She lives by herself in Fremont\, California\, in a building with other Afghan immigrants and often dines alone at a local restaurant watching soap operas. Her routine changes when she’s promoted to writing the fortunes at her job at a fortune cookie factory in the city. As her fortunes are read by strangers throughout the Bay\, Donya’s smoldering longing drives her to send a message out to the world\, unsure where it will lead. \nShot in black and white\, and with warmth and a wry sense of humor\, director Babak Jalali has crafted a loving portrait of a young woman haunted by the past but still filled with desire for companionship and connection. Featuring a cast of unforgettable\, unique characters\, and anchored by a beguiling debut performance from real-life Afghan refugee Anaita Wali Zada\, Fremont is an ode to the curious beauty of trying to build a new life in a strange land. \nDirected by Babak Jalali. Written by Carolina Cavalli & Babak Jalali. Produced by Marjaneh Moghimi\, Sudnya Shroff\, Rachael Fung\, George Rush\, Chris Martin & Laura Wagner. \nStarring Anaita Wali Zada\, Jeremy Allen White\, Hilda Schmelling\, Avis See-tho\, Siddique Ahmed\, Taban Ibraz\, Timur Nusratty\, Eddie Tang\, Jennifer McKay\, Divya Jakatdar & Gregg Turkington as Dr. Anthony.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Mutt
DESCRIPTION:Feña\, a young trans guy bustling through life in New York City\, is afflicted with an incessantly challenging day that resurrects ghosts from his past. Laundromats\, subway turnstiles\, and airport transfers are the hectic background to this emotional drama that overlaps past\, present\, and future. Settling the disharmony of transitional upheaval in relationships familial\, romantic\, and platonic is Feña’s task at hand\, and his resulting juggling act is equal parts skillful\, fumbling\, and honest. In negotiating his obliqueness\, the poignant moments he finds between himself and others – as the distance between them closes – are warm\, true\, and touching. \nVuk Lungulov-Klotz’s directorial debut is at once precise in its specificity and wholly relatable in its grand humanity. A dexterous\, visceral lead performance by Lío Mehiel embodies inbetweenness in many forms. Mutt earns its most difficult discussions through its tenderness towards each character’s struggle with the complexity of trans life\, Latinx life in America\, and of human life at large. \nWritten & directed by Vuk Lungulov-Klotz. Featuring Lío Mehiel\, Cole Doman\, MiMi Ryder & Alejandro Goic.

SUMMARY:Thacher Gallery: Yolanda M. López: Women’s Work is Never Done (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:The Thacher Gallery at the University of San Francisco (USF) presents rarely seen work by iconic Bay Area artist\, activist\, and mentor Yolanda M. López: ‘Women’s Work is Never Done’ from August 31 to November 12\, 2023. \nAn opening celebration with the collection’s curators – Angelica Rodriguez\, Lopez’s archivist\, and Rio Yanez\, her son – will take place on Thursday\, August 31 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Thacher Gallery. \nThis exhibition of rediscovered drawings\, collages\, paintings\, photographs\, prints\, and process pieces by Yolanda M. López (1942-2021) charts the evolution of her creative projects over six decades from the 1960s to the 2010s. \nThis body of work reveals López’s inquisitive approach to artistic mediums and the feminist and political sensibilities that emerged in her practice from life experiences\, research\, and community activism. Artworks include drawings from her youth\, protest designs\, preparatory studies for her iconic 1978 Guadalupe series\, photography\, collage\, and xerox art from 1980-90s Mission\, prints from her “Women’s Work is Never Done” series\, as well as her final reflective works. \nThrough the decades\, López portrayed the multifaceted roles that Latinx and BIPOC women hold in society\, depicting working class women whose labor and contributions are too often undervalued and underrepresented. This was not only a creative choice\, but informed by lived experience for López\, who even at the height of her career\, made ends meet by working at the Macy’s gift wrapping counter in downtown San Francisco. Returning the viewer’s gaze\, her subjects question cultural and gender stereotypes while retaining their strength and humanity. \n# # # \nAbout the Thacher Gallery at the University of San Francisco\nThe Thacher Gallery is a public art gallery in the USF Gleeson Library where creativity\, scholarship\, and community converge. The gallery is free and open to the public daily from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. https://www.usfca.edu/thacher-gallery \nAbout the University of San Francisco\nThe University of San Francisco is a private\, Jesuit Catholic university that reflects the diversity\, optimism\, and opportunities of the city that surrounds it. USF offers more than 230 undergraduate\, graduate\, professional\, and certificate programs in the arts and sciences\, business\, law\, education\, and nursing and health professions. At USF\, each course is an intimate learning community in which top professors encourage students to turn learning into positive action\, so the students graduate equipped to do well in the world — and inspired to change it for the better. SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Megan Lowe Dances presents Gathering Pieces of Peace
DESCRIPTION:Megan Lowe Dances (MLD) celebrates their 10th Anniversary Season with the world premiere of Gathering Pieces of Peace\, a dance theater work exploring mixed-race Asian American experiences\, with an artistic team composed of folks who identify in this way. Through thoughtful text\, soulful song\, and dynamic dancing\, Artistic Director Megan Lowe and collaborators Clarissa Rivera Dyas\, Malia Hatico-Byrne\, and Melissa Lewis Wong share stories of fractured selves and longings to belong\, and co-create a supportive environment for connection that radiates out into their communities. As part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration\, admission is free\, with suggested donations. \n“Mixed-race individuals make up less than 5% of the SF population and are severely underrepresented in the arts\,” explains Lowe. “Our artistic process thrives via collaboration\, prioritizing creating relationships of respect\, generosity\, and gratitude. We’re building a movement of folks with a rare and powerful understanding of how drastically different racial and cultural backgrounds can come closer together—dreaming up possibilities for our futures and the futures of our diverse communities\,” she adds. \nThe San Francisco Chronicle writes of Lowe’s recent work\, “The whole evening holds together with a well-hewn emotional arc\, a strong sense of form and meaningful variation\, and terrific organic use of the whole theater space…Lowe also has a delightful penchant for surprise.” \nFeaturing: \n– Dance Performance by: Clarissa Dyas\, Malia-Hatico Byrne\, Melissa Lewis Wong\, and Megan Lowe\n– Music by: Peekaboo/transcriptions01\, Zachary Abelson\, Megan Lowe\, Marica Petrey/Girl Swallows Nightingale\, and Emma Tome \nhttps://www.meganlowedances.com/donate \nFriday 9/1\, after the show = Mixed Mixer =\nMegan Lowe Dances is partnering with Asian Babe Gang (ABG) for ABG’s second Mixed Mixer. Here is what ABG has to say about this special event: “ABG’s mixed mixer was born out of the desire to gather with other mixed-race folks. We hope to use mixedness as an entrypoint to connect about shared experiences\, while acknowledging and unpacking the many differences\, nuances\, and complexities bound to come up along the way. We hope for our Mixed Mixers to offer the first steps in longer-term efforts to politicize our identities\, and build capacity together in movements that demand we show up fully. For MLD’s ‘Gathering Pieces of Peace\,’ ABG will host a Mixed Mixer-inspired reception on Fri. 9/1. Join us after the performance to continue the conversation! For this iteration of Mixed Mixer only\, audience members of all racial identities are welcome. We all hold varieties of mixed cultures and backgrounds!” And of course\, there will be some tasty snacks and beverages! \nFriday 9/8\, after the show = POC and Allies Jam =\nMegan Lowe Dance is partnering with Bay Area POC CI Community to host a POC and Allies Jam after the show. Here is the Bay Area POC CI Community’s Mission Statement: “The POC Jam provides a much-needed space for existing and future POC dancers to be centered within the larger CI community. Additionally\, we hope the jam will support the evolution of the Bay Area CI community into a more diverse\, inclusive and equitable space. Our hopes and guiding intentions for the jam are as follows: 1) To create a safer/braver space for POC within the historically and predominantly white CI community; 2) To create a more accessible entry point into CI for POC who have yet to be introduced to the form; 3) To provide quality and beginner friendly CI training for existing and new POC dancers; 4) To serve as a bridge for new POC dancers wishing to join the larger CI community.” For this POC and Allies Jam on Friday 9/8\, all dancers are welcome to join\, and it is our mission to facilitate spaces with a POC majority. In consideration of this mission\, if you identify as white and would like to attend the jam\, we enthusiastically encourage you to reach out to your POC friends and have them join along! (The POC CI Jam is a project of Sense Object’s Artists & Activists in Residency program. You can find more info at senseobject.com/aair-residency) \nSaturday 9/9\, during the show = interpreter.png ASL Interpretation=\nMegan Lowe Dances is excited to be partnering with Annie Dieckman\, Certified National Interpreter to provide American Sign Language Interpretation for Gathering Pieces of Peace. If you are in need of ASL Interpretation\, please leave a note in the Comments section at the checkout by Wednesday 9/6 to let us know you are coming. \nTickets to all shows are by donation. You can choose a price point that feels best to you!

VJ for Insomniac events for 8 years. \n-———————————————————————– \nMax Gardner \nThe San Francisco DJ and producer did not initially pursue electronic music with ambitions to promote himself as a brand. Doors opened nonetheless\, and they never stopped. He is now one of the artists most closely associated with Bay Area techno\, releasing on labels like Occultists\, Resource Records and Northern Parallels. He has also launched an imprint called Peer with the mission of platforming the music of promising up-and-comers on equal footing to that of established figureheads. \nHis often psychedelic\, sometimes suspenseful\, always hypnotic range of the techno spectrum has afforded him audiences in cities across the globe. He’s performed at clubs like MUTE in Medellin\, Leland City Club and The Works in Detroit\, Beta Nightclub in Denver\, and Desterro in Lisbon. He is also a return guest at gatherings like DEPTH in Seattle and The Great Beyond outside Minneapolis. His first European tour in 2023 saw him visit RSO.BERLIN and Moog in Barcelona in addition to Club John Doe in Amsterdam and a gathering by phase.ctv in Madrid. \nTechno is a layered phenomenon. On the surface level is the talk\, fleeting and temporary. Beneath it lies an intricate web woven by all manner of creatives and intellectuals. At the center of it all is the sound itself\, and it is in this realm of sonic abstraction that you find Max Gardner. \n \n————————————————— \nDov1 \nDov1 has often been comfortable to be working in the shadows\, but his influence filters our through the music on his labels. As a producer his sounds are rooted in heavy bass and a blending digital and organic textures. He does not have restrictions of one type of Bass music\, due to the fact he has journeyed through many incarnations of Bass music as the genres arise\, often pioneering the genres on his label\, Muti Music. In his role as founder & owner of Muti Music\, and the other labels he has / does play roles in; Medicine\, Producer Dojo\, Cyberset\, Earthdance\, EyePhunk and Fuel Records\, he has helped define the sounds coming out of the US west coast\, often serving a as bridge for cross continental influences and collaborations to happen. His ‘Clipping Paths’ compilations series has served as a launch pad for emerging sounds\, the original compilation led to a groundbreaking evolution in west coast bass music sound. Dov1 has rocked dance floors alongside many luminaries of Dance culture including Diplo\, Bassnectar\, Opiuo\, ill.Gates\, Gasslamp Killer\, Excision\, Eprom\, Tipper\, Freq Nasty\, Zeds Dead\, TRUTH\, Clozee to name a few. His diversity has also allowed him to hold it down in unusual situations like opening for Ferry Corsten\, Boy George or Shpongle and even playing alongside and jamming with Shafqat Ali Khan. Dov1 also produces under the name DnA with An-ten-nae\, and has also produced collaborative tunes with ill.Gates\, HNGVR\, Hooves and Funk Monsta. \n \n—————————————————- \nSubjacent \nSubjacent is a San Francisco-based female duo. Exploring the duality in nature and in people\, Subjacent produces techno\, melodic techno tracks mixing soft melodies and powerful techno drums. Their first track “Orange Sky” was released on Family Piknik and has received support from renowned Techno DJs & Music Producers like Tom Pooks\, Emanate\, and the legendary John Digweed (on Transitions #877). Rose and Amandine are multicultural\, and are both DJs and music producers – currently working on their next EPs. \n \n————————————————– \nBairFro \nJason Fairbrother aka BairFro is no stranger to the underground. Over his 15 years of DJing he has honed his sound to include percussive elements interlaced with tripped out organic sounds and melodies. His dark\, groovy sound entrances the crowd into a numinous state\, unifying it as one. The aim is always to provide a guided journey\, unlocking something inside us all\, while perpetuating the philosophy that we come together on the dance floor to lose ourselves in the music and use it as medicine. \n \nB2B \nJaime James \nJaime James’ foray into the DJ scene began during the mid-80s in Northern California. Though he was affiliated with various Bay Area DJ crews\, it wasn’t until his younger brother brought home a pair of rickety belt-drive Technics\, and a beat-up 2-channel mixer\, that things truly began. Back then\, his vinyl record purchasing habit leaned heavily into hip hop. \nThen\, after a nearly ten-year hiatus and with mobile DJ’ing far behind him\, Jaime became involved in the dance music scene in 2005. Since then\, he’s held residencies at several San Francisco nightclubs\, including The Endup\, and has performed at venues around the Bay Area. \nJaime has also performed at various music festivals across the US\, like LoveFest (SF)\, the WMC/MMW (Miami)\, Movement (Detroit)\, Burning Man (Black Rock City)\, as well as international events in France\, Germany\, Spain\, and the UK. \n \n———————————– \nAmber \nSan Francisco-based Amber is an ambassador for uncompromising hard techno. Active since the 90s\, Amber was a resident DJ with the woman-centered collective Sister SF\, co-founded NorCal DJ and Music Production Academy\, and co-hosted :CODE\, a nightlife and electronic music television show and weekly at DNA Lounge. She currently hosts Pop-Up Techno on Twitch. \niamthedj.com \nB2B \nSean Ocean \nSean Ocean is a Live Act\, DJ\, Producer from the San Francisco Bay Area who has been a deep part of the Northern California Techno community for more than 25 years\, with experience as a promoter\, Soundsystem owner-operator\, and music writer. He has been a follower at the birth of the techno scene in SF and has watched it grow and helped to mold it through his promotions outfit DEFSF. He continues to help it grow by encouraging scene unity\, networking with collaborators\, and adding his own voice as a musician in his techno community and abroad. \nWelcome \n \n———————————– \nCode369 \nCODE369 Bio CODE369 is a music & DJ project created by PyraMind SF Studios founder\, Producer\, and Creative Director\, Greg Gordon. \nCODE369 marks a transition into his storytelling explorations into organic and tribal House with journeys into melodic\, minimal\, and psychedelic techno. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Johnny Guitar
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Ray’s unorthodox Western about the perilous future of resolute Arizona saloon owner Vienna (Joan Crawford) and reformed outlaw Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden) was snubbed by American critics and audiences alike upon its original release. It found fans in Europe\, notably in Cahiers du cinéma contributor François Truffaut\, who hailed the film as “a Western dream\,” and in Almodóvar\, who references the film’s color palette and story arc for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988). In Breakdown\, Almodóvar literalizes his inspiration when voice actress Pepa (Carmen Maura) is seen dubbing Johnny Guitar into Spanish.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Millie Lies Low
DESCRIPTION:Millie\, an architecture student from Wellington\, New Zealand\, has landed a competitive internship with a prestigious firm in New York. After telling everyone she knows about the opportunity\, she suddenly suffers a panic attack as her plane is about to take off\, and misses her flight. In a desperate pivot\, Millie decides to save face by hiding in plain sight around Wellington\, suitcase in tow\, using Instagram and the power of denial to depict a trip to New York City that never happened. Trapped in a spiral of hilariously uncomfortable self-inflected scenarios\, Millie will have to dig deep to restore her mental health and her dignity. Praised for capturing “the chaotic self-destruction of Fleabag and the anxious missteps of Eighth Grade\,” (FilmDaze)\, Millie Lies Low is a poignant cringe comedy for our time.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Orson Welles’ The Trial
DESCRIPTION:Starring Anthony Perkins\, Jeanne Moreau\, Romy Schneider\, Orson Welles. \nAnthony Perkins’ Josef K. realizes he is under arrest for an unspecified crime; he enters a nondescript door and an immense crowd rises to its feet; two detectives beat a third in a tiny room lit by a single\, swinging bulb; and in a gigantic office the desks stretch on\, and on… The victim of a nightmarish\, dystopian scenario\, K ultimately begins doubting his own innocence. \nWelles’ view of Kafka’s classic of meaningless persecution changes the ending and rearranges the plot\, but remains faithful to the incidents within those parameters; while stylistically attaining some of the most baroque effects of Welles’ career\, cutting from Stalinist apartment blocks in Zagreb (including 800 typists in a single room) to the seemingly endless nooks\, crannies\, and cavernous vaults of the vast deserted Gare d’Orsay in Paris\, while Albinoni’s Adagio for Organ and Strings plays both forwards and backwards on the soundtrack. With Jeanne Moreau as a sullen nightclub entertainer\, Romy Schneider as a web-fingered\, eager-to-please “nurse\,” a band of feral nymphettes\, and Alexander Alexeïeff’s hypnotic “pinscreen animation” prologue. A uniquely personal work (Welles dubbed 11 of the characters himself)\, this was his first film since CITIZEN KANE to be released as he intended.
