SUMMARY:Manny’s: Laugh for a Cause: Comedy Benefit with The Comedians With Disabilities Act
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Disability Pride month\, join us in changing attitudes about disabilities one laugh at a time with The Comedians with Disabilities Act. Proceeds will go to College Track Bay Area to equip students confronting systemic barriers to earn a bachelor’s degree in pursuit of a life of opportunity\, choice\, and power. \nCreated in 2010\, the Comedians with Disabilities Act is an outrageously funny collection of comedians who have disabilities\, both seen and unseen\, and bring forth the humor they find in their experiences. Featuring Michael Beers\, Nina G\, Steve Danner\, and Mean Dave: \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to angelina@welcomeotmannys.com \nAbout the Comedians: \nAbout Michael Beers \nMichael was born and raised in Montana. He was the winner of the Norman G. Brooks Comedy Competition at the Hollywood Improv in 2005. Michael was also the previous winner of Funny Fest (Calgary Comedy Festival) and has opened for comedians like Gilbert Gottfried. He is also a sought after keynote speaker on topics like humor\, disability advocacy\, education and community building. \nAbout Nina G \nIn addition to being a comedian\, Nina G is also a college and corporate speaker and author of three books. Her memoir\, Stutterer Interrupted: The Comedian Who Almost Didn’t Happen\, was released to critical acclaim in 2019 and is about realizing her lifelong comedy dream while overcoming internalized stigma. In February 2022\, she launched her new book co-authored by OJ Patterson\, Bay Area Stand-Up Comedy: A Humorous History. Nina has performed all over the United States and appeared on many daytime TV talk shows\, NPR broadcasts\, and podcasts. \nAbout Steve Danner \nSteve Danner’s comedy career began as an audience member at a comedy club. That night\, the comedian on stage started riffing with him and after Danner showcased his own riffing skills\, the comic approached Danner after the show and suggested he give comedy a try. He soon began a career as a comedian and producer and has opened for many headliners such as Last Comic Standing Winner Felipe Esparza. \nAbout Mean Dave \nComedian Mean Dave has opened for many notable comedians like Josh Blue\, Big Jay Oakerson\, and Jay Mohr\, and has performed at colleges across the US. Mean Dave’s role in the Comedians with Disabilities Act helps to bring his critical message about addiction and disabilities to audiences around the world.

As artists in their own right\, their friendship and music-making prowess has expanded since the Scandinavian\, underground house music of the early 2000’s. Early on and standing individually\, the pairing have released multiple genre-crossing collaborations on the legendary Global Underground and Ministry Of Sound labels prior to their immensely respected solo careers. Now\, the launch of anamē sees the two stalwarts unite to bring atmospheric and unique productions\, with their debut single alongside Above & Beyond on ‘Gratitude’ on Anjunabeats and releases on such labels as Joris Voorn’s Spectrum and Yotto’s Odd One Out. \nTranslating to ‘to adapt’ in Old Norwegian\, anamē’s artistic guise personifies itself as one that is constantly evolving and intoxicating. Having played such legendary venues as Gashouder in Amsterdam or The Gorge in USA in 2022\, Printworks in London and Tomorrowland lined up for 2023\, new music poised for release throughout the year\, anamē is certain to solidify their status as one of the most exciting projects to emerge out of 2022. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support. SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Salads - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Salads takes on an exploration of three different approaches to these produce-centered collections of delicious\, healthy meals. \nFirst we will learn to make a classic Caesar salad\, with or without anchovies\, and find out why that is such a key point. As an essential element to this salad we will make our own cold emulsion (non-foodnerds call it a mayonnaise!) and the amazing warm croutons that set this dish apart from the cellophane wrapped knock-offs lined up at the market. \nNext we move on to an updated French classic. Lyonnaise\, the whole meal salad\, as we learn to poach an egg perfectly every time. Shiitake mushrooms will be transformed into faux bacon\, so smokey and rich you will never know the difference. Finally we will glisten some bitter pale green frisée lettuce with a Sherry vinaigrette\, and arrange all the components together for a simple weeknight meal. \nFinally we will end our class with a rainbow of roasted beets\, which are a technique in and of themselves. Add some arugula for bite and color\, and a creamy goat cheese in several incarnations. Out come our knives for more technique work to finish our composed salad\, as we cut away all the less desirable elements of an orange and are left with only “supremes” of perfect citrus. \nMENU \nClassic Caesar Salad\, Homemade Dressing\, Warm Croutons \nSalade Lyonnaise – frisee lettuce\, shiitake mushroom bacon\, poached egg \nBeet\, Citrus\, Goat’s cheese\, and Pistachio Salad \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: fish\, eggs\, wheat\, dairy\, tree nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: Curve Magazine Cartoons: A Dyke Strippers' Retrospective (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the launch of a new exhibition\, “Curve Magazine Cartoons: A Dyke Strippers’ Retrospective.” The program will include remarks from curator Julia Rosenzweig and light refreshments. This exhibition will include pieces from the archives of Curve magazine and the GLBT Historical Society. \nThe landscape of lesbian cartoons in the 1990s was small yet vibrant; full of passion\, satire\, self-deprecation\, and deep-cutting political and social commentary. Publishing these cartoons in the early years of Curve magazine (which was named Deneuve magazine between 1991-1995) was a natural fit\, aligning with the pivotal lesbian publication’s cheeky voice and journalistic integrity\, and enhancing both the aesthetics of the pages and its witty content. In the 1990s\, these alternative artists had few platforms to publish their voices and their art. Curve magazine is proud to have been at the forefront of amplifying these marginalized voices and allowing them to further spread lesbian representation\, culture\, and humor. \nThis exhibition opens Thursday\, July 13 and will remain on display through fall 2023. Click here for more information about the exhibition. \nAbout the Curator\nJulia Rosenzweig (she/they) is the Archive and Outreach Manager at The Curve Foundation. She is also an active contributor to the Lesbian Herstory Archives (LHA)\, where she co-manages the Lesbian Elders Oral Herstory Project\, a project that documents lesbian elders’ life histories through intergenerational dialogue and knowledge-sharing. Julia has researched\, archived\, and curated a variety of LGBTQIA+ materials\, including lesbian activist posters\, episodes of Martha Shelley’s 1970s radio show Lesbian Nation\, and Community Gallery institutional papers. Julia graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Italian Studies\, and completed her MSLIS at Pratt Institute School of Information. Julia brings an ethos of community-building and understanding through conversation to The Curve Foundation. She is honored to steward archives that center the narrative control\, empowerment\, and agency of their creators.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Summer of Learning: Sculpting a Life: Chana Orloff between Paris & Tel Aviv
DESCRIPTION:Have you been missing the classroom lately? \nCraving a good old fashion mind stimulating lecture from your favorite professor? \nIt may be summer\, but that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop! \nIn Sculpting a Life\, the first book-length biography of sculptor Chana Orloff (1888-1968)\, author Paula Birnbaum tells the amazing story of a fiercely determined and ambitious woman who fled antisemitism in Ukraine\, emigrated to Palestine with her family\, then travelled to Paris to work in haute couture before becoming an internationally recognized artist. Against the resonant backdrop of revolution\, world wars\, a global pandemic and forced migrations\, her sculptures embody themes of gender\, displacement\, exile\, and belonging. A major figure in the School of Paris\, Orloff contributed to the canon of modern art alongside Picasso\, Modigliani and Chagall. \nStories from her unpublished memoir enrich this life story of courage\, perseverance\, and extraordinary artistic accomplishments that take us through the aftermath of the Holocaust when Orloff lived between Paris and Tel Aviv. This biography brings new perspectives and understandings to Orloff’s multiple identities as a cosmopolitan émigré\, woman\, and Jew\, and is a much-needed intervention into the narrative of modern art. (162 words) \nWe will be joined by the amazing Professor Birnbaum from University of San Francisco! \nAbout Professor Birnbaum: \nPaula Birnbaum is the Ann Getty Endowed Chair and Professor of Arts History and Museum Studies\, and serves as Academic Director of the Museum Studies M.A. Program at the University of San Francisco. She is a specialist in modern and contemporary art and holds a doctorate in Art History from Bryn Mawr College. Professor Birnbaum is a former Fulbright Scholar and fellow at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University. \nBirnbaum has completed three books: Sculpting a Life: Chana Orloff Between Paris and Tel Aviv (Brandeis University Press\, 2023); Women Artists in Interwar France: Framing Femininities (Ashgate/Routledge\, 2011; 2016)\, and a co-edited anthology (with Anna Novakov)\, Essays on Women’s Artistic and Cultural Contributions 1919-1939 (Edwin Mellen). Her publications contribute to feminist scholarship within the fields of art history\, museum studies\, and Jewish studies\, with recent articles on topics including contemporary feminist art in Israel and the global street art movement. She has published essays on feminist art in numerous recent exhibition catalogs and lectured internationally\, with recent presentations at the University of Johannesburg\, the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume\, Paris\, Tel Aviv University\, and the 34th World Congress of Art History\, Beijing. Birnbaum is the recipient of the Hadassah Brandeis Institute Research Award (2017)\, and the University of San Francisco’s Distinguished Research Award (2014) and Distinguished Teaching Award (2008).

SUMMARY:Public Works: Dam Swindle + Joe Fro b2b Iwata presented by PW
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 14th\, 9pm – 3am \nMain Room / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nTickets will be available at the door night of. \nLINEUP: \nMain Room \n➩ Dam Swindle \n➩ Joe Fro b2b Iwata \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nDAM SWINDLE BIO: \nIt was in 2011 that Dutch pair Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets quickly broke through in the electronic music scene. Since then they have become known for their widescreen approach to making and playing club ready grooves. From deep to disco\, tech to soul\, they join the dots between the past and the present with their own sense of storytelling and do so in clubs around the world\, as well as in their own studio. House might be the root of the Dam Swindle sound\, but it takes nourishment from a much wider world of music. \nIt was their early\, high impact tunes such as ‘The Wrap Around’ and ‘The Break Up’\, that got dancers allover the world in a frenzy. Since then\, the pair has constantly evolved and matured and continued to draw on all musical niches. Building bridges between them\, their landmark 2018 album High Life or their‘Coffee in the Morning EP’ both furthered their take on house music with a real sense of timelessness and class. \nSince 2013\, the pair has also established their own Heist Recordings as a well respected label that is home to the majority of their own originals\, though other underground mainstays such as Aus Music and Classic Music Company have also come calling. Heist is more than just a label\, though-it is a breeding ground for talents oldand new; somewhere talent is nurtured and allowed to develop. Label showcases and special projects such as the yearly Roundup EP; where all artists from the past 12 months remix each other after a random selection process\, furthers the family vibe and helps Heist stand out from crowd. Artists such as Nebraska\,Orlando Voorn\, Kassian\, Demuir\, Makèz\, Max Graef\, Adryiano\, Pépé Bradock\, Nachtbraker\, Matthew Herbert\, Ge-Ology\, Byron the Aquarius and many more have all contributed\, proving that it is a place for unrestrained creatives to be free with their own sonic visions. Thelabel looks as good as it sounds\, too\, thanks to visual artist Bas Koopmans’s standout artwork designs. \nProof of DamSwindle’s widescreen approach to production is their long and talented list of collaborators\,which includes the likes of acclaimed musician\, Eric Clapton and John Mayer collaborator and Blue Note artist Tom Misch\, US talent Seven Davis Jr.\, instrumental collective Jungle by Night\, plus Marc de Clive-Lowe\, Jitwam and Lorenz Rhode. Next to their own originals\, a broad spectrum of artists have asked DamSwindle for some of their special remix magic: on labels like Strut and Soundway they havereworked the legendary Pat Thomas\, aka the ‘Golden voice of Africa\,’ and gave hissingle ‘Yamona’ acontemporary electronic edge\, as well as The Mauskovic Dance Band’s track ‘Space Drum Machine’ andplenty more artists like Kerri Chandler\, Mayer Hawthorne\, Tom Misch and Dave Lee’s Sunburst Band. As their talent for bridging genres from all over the world continues to attract global attention\, high profile projects keep rolling in from all points on the musical globe. \nDam Swindle are famously avid collectors of both old and new records\, and it shows in their DJ sets\, which keep you on your toes as they move freely and skillfully through different times\, places and sounds. Rather than limiting themselves to a certain feeling or mood\, Detroit Swindle can call on classic house\, obscure disco\, African funk\, soulful techno and plenty in between\, all with the aim of making those special moments that crowds never forget. It is for that reason that their name has become a real stamp of authority and invention in the dance music world. Whatever they do\, then\, this pair do with irresistible charm. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support.
