SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Lost Weekend: A Love Story
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” explores the 18-month relationship (1973-1975) that John Lennon spent with May Pang\, his Chinese American assistant turned lover (on Yoko Ono’s insistence). With May’s help\, Lennon reunited with his son Julian and had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles – with the albums “Mind Games”\, “Walls and Bridges” which included his only #1 Hit Single “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”\, “Rock and Roll” and collaborated with Elton John\, David Bowie\, Harry Nilsson\, Mick Jagger\, and Ringo to name a few. Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self\, a naïve 22-year old experiencing her first unforgettable love.

It’s for any adult who has struggled with the seemingly insurmountable climb back to life after losing everything they thought they were and ever wanted.” \nAbout the Performer & Creative Team\nKathryn Keats began developing The Hummingbird as a multicast show at Berkeley Repertory’s The Ground Floor and discovered director David Ford while listening to him being interviewed on KPFA in her car driving home one day. She immediately called The Marsh to work with Ford and The Hummingbird became a solo beat Musical under Ford’s tutelage and direction. It won best solo musical at Marshstream International Fest 2020.\nBefore going into hiding Keats spent her life in theater and showbiz. She is happy to be back writing plays and doing music.\nShe is a Drama Critics Circle Award recipient and is a member of Actors Equity and Sag/Aftra. She is grateful to her family for their love and is ever grateful to Judge Leo Dorado for his ongoing support. \nDavid Ford has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, and the dean of solo performance. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running “Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\,” “Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud\, “Second Time Around\,” Geoff Hoyle’s “Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\,” and all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows\, including the longest-running solo show in the Bay Area\, “Not A Genuine Black Man.” \nKevin Gerzevitz is a professional musician\, composer and teacher based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He frequently performs as jazz organist with B3B4 Organ Jazz Quartet and as a pianist and bandleader with The KG Trio. In his hometown of Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Gerzevitz attended the University of Michigan School of Music\, focusing on piano performance\, jazz studies\, improvisation\, and composition\, while majoring in Music Theory and German. Upon earning his BMA in 1990\, he relocated to the SF Bay Area where he works as a freelance pianist\, composer and teacher. He attended Mills College from 2003 to 2005 to innovate his approach to teaching music\, earning certifications in Levels I\, II\, and III as an Orff Schulwerk instructor. Since 2008\, he has worked as the Music & Movement Specialist at Pacific Primary Orange Sun School in San Francisco. Gerzevitz has scored several independent films and has produced music for advertising\, web\, multimedia and theater. \nMichael Manring is a true visionary and an inimitable stylist who is considered by many to be the world’s leading solo bassist. He has also played with Michael Hedges\, Suzanne Ciani\, Henry Kaiser and John Gorka. Hailed by many as the world’s leading solo bassist\, Michael Manring has been pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for over two decades. While his technical skill and innovations always make an impression\, it’s his ability to communicate on a profound emotional level that most touches listeners. \nAram Avagyan is a composer\, arranger and pianist with a style that ranges from contemporary pop to soul and R&B to music for film\, has been composing original works since the age of 11 in his homeland of Armenia. He attended the renowned Armenian Jazz College and four years later was invited to attend the Armenia State Musical Theatre. Additional accolades for Aram include being awarded the coveted Anoush Award in Los Angeles\, California for the Best Song of the Year\, having numerous international artists perform his songs and having famed singer Lianna attended the International Music Contest in Bulgaria performing Aram’s song “Ari Ari” which won the Grand Prix Title.

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.” \nAbout the Performer\nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Dim Sum: Beyond Dumplings - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nDim Sum is not all about dumplings. We’ll set aside popular dumplings like har gow and shumai\, and visit some of the beloved dishes that are important supporting acts to complete a dim sum experience. Some of these dishes lend the textural element to the dim sum meal\, like sinking your teeth into the crispy\, sweet and chewy skin of the ham sui gok to discover the creamy savory pork filling inside. Forget the skill of tying a cherry stem with your tongue; try the challenge of nibbling all the skin from chicken feet bones! Some dishes contribute a punch of flavor to the dim sum like baby back ribs with douci; it has a deep umami flavor of salted black beans\, balanced by ginger and chilies\, all tied all together by the unctuous and porky fat of the ribs. Whether you’ve enjoyed these dishes before\, or never stepped into a dim sum parlor before\, cook with us and enjoy these dim sum classics with Linda as your guide! \nMENU \nYuba and Bamboo Rolls—Fried then Steamed Bean Curd Sheet Rolls filled with Pork\, Shrimp\, Bamboo Shoots\, and Wood Ear Mushrooms \nHam Sui Gok—Deep Fried Mochi (Sweet Rice Flour) Fritters filled with Pork\, Cilantro\, and Mushrooms (pictured) \nPhoenix Claws—Tender\, Fall off the Bone\, Braised Chicken Feet with Chilies and Fermented Soybean \nBaby Back Ribs with Douci—Steamed Koji-Marinated Pork Ribs with Salted Soy Beans\, Ginger and Chilies \nLor Mai Gai—Steamed Sticky Rice with Chicken\, Shiitake\, and Lap Cheung (Chinese Sausage) \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Shellfish\, Soy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nLinda Tay Esposito is a teaching chef whose food represents a tribute and a commitment to the authenticity of the cuisines of the Pacific Rim. For the last 18 years\, Linda has shared her passion and knowledge of East and Southeast Asian cuisines in the Bay Area by teaching at many notable cooking schools in the Bay Area. An all around food professional\, Linda expanded the distribution for artisan tofu maker\, Hodo Soy\, and led the development of La Cocina’s municipal marketplace\, where she uses food as a creative approach to economic development. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Desserts - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Desserts teaches you how to wrap up your home-cooked meals with everyone’s favorite course. Because we know there are never enough sweets\, we will craft three different dishes in this class! \nTo get started we will whip up a gluten-free and seasonal Blood Orange Meringue Pie. Talk about a show-stopper: it will begin with the simplicity of a press-n pistachio crust. Then on to making a citrus curd\, as we thicken and sweeten crimson blood orange juice into our filling. Topped with the science-heavy light as air clouds of an Italian meringue\, and grab your spoons in one hand and your phone in the other for this dessert. \nThen onto cookies\, with everyone’s favorite dunker biscotti. Want to learn to bake? What could be better than something called “twice-baked”? Measuring\, scaling\, and other precision excursions into the world of pastry\, plus the use of a savory herb just to ground Chef Mike in this world of sugar. \nFinally\, we will wrap up this dessert tour with the childhood favorite chocolate pudding\, all grown up and fancy. We will learn the basics of thickening (as if three desserts weren’t thickening enough!) with cornstarch and eggs\, and talk about chocolate as we use it in three forms for this dessert. Just to make it interesting we will add in a touch of chocolate’s ancient partner chile to make this a more grown up option. The class will also include a hearty salad and an array of cheeses and snacks\, as we know we cannot live on sweets alone. \nMENU \nBlood Orange Meringue Pie with Pistachio Crust \nRosemary\, Almond\, Orange Biscotti \nGrown up Chocolate Pudding \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: egg\, wheat\, dairy\, tree nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion.

SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: The Bay Area 5 - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:111 Minna Gallery is pleased to present their latest project\, ‘The Bay Area 5’ featuring the works of five renowned and highly prolific Bay Area artists. \nOpening on April 20th 2023\, the Bay Area 5 will feature the works of Max Ehrman (Eon 75)\, Seibot\, Nicole Hayden\, Josh Thurman\, and Messy Beck. All five of these artists have been active in the Bay Area throughout the last decade (and longer) creating murals throughout the streets of San Francisco\, the greater Bay Area and abroad. Ranging from backgrounds starting in graffiti\, street art\, illustration\, architecture and fine art; all of these artists have come to make a name for themselves in the Bay with full building-size murals\, expansive street art projects\, dozens of community-driven storefront murals during the pandemic and privately commissioned murals for clients ranging from small businesses in San Francisco to The Googleplex in Mountain View\, Ca. \nMax Ehrman goes under the moniker ‘Eon 75’ meaning Extermination.Of.Normality and 1975\, his birth year. Gaining much of his inspiration from studying architecture in Florida and Germany\, Max has painted murals and exhibited work in 10 countries and 3 continents. He has traveled with the ‘Meeting of Styles’ creating large scale works throughout Europe\, Asia and South America. \nSeibot (KT Seibert) is an extremely queer\, trans non-binary visual artist and muralist based in San Francisco. KT works primarily in acrylic and latex paint\, metal leaf\, ink\, glitter additives\, and high gloss finishes. KT is the co-owner of Moth Belly Gallery\, located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. \nNicole Hayden’s work explores a juxtaposition between pattern and figurative realism. She uses imagery from photos and magazines from the 1950s-60s with a vintage color palette to ignite a feeling of nostalgia. She intuitively marries this imagery underneath a colorful patterned foreground with the intention of creating a new open ended story for the viewer to interpret. \nJosh Thurman’s new works explore the combination of making 2D pieces look 3D\, and 3D pieces look 2D. His process of layering wood of different thicknesses provides a unique viewing experience from different angles making his oil paintings look 3D and lifelike. His work explores subjects ranging from cultural iconography to various pop culture based fan art all the way to original characters of his own creation. \nMessy Beck is a painter\, illustrator and muralist. Her work showcases narratives that explore themes of identity\, mental health and human connection. The contrast between her inviting color palettes and uniquely peculiar figures yield paintings that are constantly navigating a fine line between celebratory and disturbing. \nFeaturing art by:\nMax Ehrman (Eon 75) – @maxehrman\nSeibot – @seibot\nNicole Hayden – @nicolehaydenart\nJosh Thurman – @thurmanart\nMessy Beck – @messybeck \nEvent Info:\nWhat: ‘THE BAY AREA 5’\n	Music by DJ David Choong Lee\nWhen:\n Opening Reception Thursday 4/20/23 from 5:00 PM – 10:00 P M\n Open By Appointment Saturday 4/22/23 – 7/06/23 – reach out to:dyoungv@111minnagallery.com\n Closing Party Thursday 6/29/23\n Art Coming Down Thursday 7/06/23\nWhere: 111 Minna Gallery at 111 Minna St\, San Francisco\, CA 94105 \nAbout 111 Minna Gallery\nOver its 28 years\, 111 Minna Gallery has been recognized as: Winner: Best Art Gallery (2019 & 2018/SF Weekly)\, Winner of the Small Business of the Year Award (2018/SF Chamber of Commerce)\, and Winner of the 2018 Small Business of The Year Award at The Ebbies. 111 Minna continues to be a mainstay for art and culture in the bay area.
