SUMMARY:Dance Mission Theater: CubaCaribe Festival Festival of Dance & Music: Reunión/Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-17th-annual-cubacaribe-festival-of-dance-music-reuniongathering-tickets-485647533847\nA mixed program with performances by: Alafia Dance Ensemble\, Los Lupeños de San José\, Agua Doce Dance\, Cuicacalli\, Embodiment Project\, La Unión Matancera\, Batey Tambó\nSeven local and visiting dance companies will create original choreography rooted in the Caribbean and its Diaspora based on the curatorial vision. Gathering is either a noun or a verb\, something we do or is done. After the last few years in a global pandemic\, we recognize the importance of physically coming together. The isolation and reuniting after has taken many forms. We will reflect on our individual and shared experiences and resilience. Dance\, music and art proved more important than ever; they enabled a way to communally gather\, to be a part of something larger than ourselves and to share\, a way to express emotional struggles and joys and serves as freedom for individuals\, cultures and communities. This is true now and has been true throughout history.

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Tokyo Story
DESCRIPTION:A profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak\, Tokyo Story is the crowning achievement of the unparalleled Yasujiro Ozu. The film\, which follows an aging couple’s journey to visit their grown children in bustling postwar Tokyo\, surveys the rich and complex world of family life with the director’s customary delicacy and incisive perspective on social mores. Featuring lovely performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara\, Tokyo Story plumbs and deepens the director’s recurring theme of generational conflict\, creating what is without question one of cinema’s mightiest masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Return to Seoul
DESCRIPTION:In Davy Chou’s dazzling second narrative feature\, a mercurial 25-year-old — born in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents — returns to her motherland in search of answers. \nBorn in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents\, Frédérique Benoît\, a.k.a. Freddie (Ji-min Park)\, is an arrogant\, mercurial\, and unyielding 25-year-old in search of answers. Unfamiliar with her native language or the intricacies of Korean culture\, she spontaneously travels “home” — there’s no place like it — after being rerouted by a typhoon. There\, she befriends a hotel employee named Tena (Guka Han)\, who sets her on the path to finding her biological parents and unearthing her origin story. While her mother remains a mystery\, Freddie successfully confronts her eager father (Kwang-rok Oh). But much is lost in translation and her impetuous journey leaves her already heavy baggage packed with more questions than answers. As Thomas Wolfe once wrote\, “You can’t go home again\,” and it’s not long before Freddie — still recognizable\, though with her foundations fully transformed and wanderlust as her North Star — is back in her motherland constructing another house of cards.

SUMMARY:826 Valencia: Inheritance: An Interview Project (Ages 13-18)
DESCRIPTION:A three-session workshop\nTeacher\nKendra Lappin\nFor who\nOpen to 15 students\, ages 13-18\nWhen\nSundays\, April 2\, 9\, & 16\nTime\n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nLocation\n826 Valencia Mission Center Writing Lab\nBehind every thing or trait we inherit is a story: a story that can connect us back to ancestors we may never have had the chance to meet. Everything from the way we speak\, how we carry ourselves\, how we look\, gestures\, recipes\, garments\, jewelry\, religious practices\, and names can be traced back to the people who raised us. \nOver the course of three sessions\, students will identify something they have inherited from their families\, learn how to conduct interviews\, and write a narrative essay about what they learned. \nThis workshop will take place at our Mission Center Writing Lab (826 Valencia Street). \nTo express interest in this workshop fill out the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/H8RnYXQv2TbLJ7PN7 \nAfter registering\, staff will reach out to offer a spot depending on eligibility and availability in the program. Our workshops are open to everyone\, but we give priority to SFUSD students with a socio-economic need and hold spaces for students enrolled in our other programs. \nEvent dates:\nApril 2\, 9\, & 16

DESCRIPTION:The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence\, Inc.\, San Francisco’s beloved and storied drag nuns are delighted to announce that they will be back to celebrate Easter in Dolores Park on Sunday\, April 9\, 2023. Easter also marks the 44th anniversary of the Sisters\, who started when a couple gay men donned nuns’ habits and went to the Castro on a lark\, and realized there was a need for nondenominational and nonjudgmental ministry.\nThis year’s theme “Peep Show” will explore all the permutations from sugary sweets to North Beach diversions. This is the second year returning to an in-person event and in keeping with the Sisters’ core values of promoting public health\, harm reduction and safety\, CDC guidelines for outdoor events will be followed. All attendees are encouraged to be fully vaccinated. Masks are recommended when around others whose vaccination status is unknown.\nThe day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Children’s Easter featuring a special appearance by the Easter bunny\, an Easter egg hunt\, story time\, and other family friendly activities. At the conclusion of Children’s Easter\, the community should be advised that the show becomes more adult oriented as the day progresses. While nudity and profanity are prohibited\, some parents may find the content objectionable for children under 16 years of age.\nAt noon\, San Francisco trans activist\, performer\, and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Honey Mahogany will take the Main Stage to host a variety show full of fierce performers\, surprise guests and sister miracles. This year’s lineup features San Francisco favorites Connie Champagne\, Kitten on the Keys\, Polesexual\, Baloney\, The Cockettes featuring Steven Satyricon\, Trixxie Carr\, Alex U Inn and The Mommaz Boyz\, and a Drag Revue starring Linda Summers\, Christina Ashton\, Nikita Vega\, Theresa Giudcoochie & Tony OMFG! Throughout the day the audience will take center stage as they show off their Easter spirit competing in the colorful Easter Bonnet contest. And of course\, Easter in Dolores Park would not be complete without the world-famous Foxy Mary and Hunky Jesus Contests.\nThe contests are open to all! Potential contestants are asked to arrive wearing their Easter bonnet\, Foxy Mary or Hunky Jesus looks and line up backstage when the contest is announced from the main stage. There will be an initial screening process to determine which contestant(s) are most divinely fabulous and invited to move on to the stage.\nSisters’ Easter – “Peep Show” is produced by the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence\, Inc. in conjunction with event partners San Francisco Recreation and Parks\, Love Dolores\, JK Sound\, and Recology. Peep show would not be possible without the support of our amazing allies\, platinum sponsor GILEAD\, and sponsors Tito’s Vodka\, Junipero Gin\, Cointreau\, and Falcon | NakedSword.\nAbout the Sisters\nThe Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a leading-edge Order of queer and trans nuns who believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty. Since their first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday\, 1979\, the Sisters have devoted themselves to community service\, ministry\, and outreach to those on the edges and to promoting human rights\, respect for diversity\, and spiritual enlightenment. The Sisters use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry\, complacency\, and guilt that chain the human spirit. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Salt of This Sea
DESCRIPTION:The Arab Film and Media Institute presents the 3rd Annual Arab Women in the Arts Showcase \nSoraya\, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees\, discovers that her grandfather’s savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Stubborn\, passionate and determined to reclaim what is hers\, she fulfills her life-long dream of “returning” to Palestine. Slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own internal anger. She meets Emad\, a young Palestinian whose ambition\, contrary to hers\, is to leave forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives\, they know in order to be free\, they must take things into their own hands\, even if it’s illegal. \nAbout the filmmaker: Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir has been working in independent film since 1994 and has written\, directed and produced a number of short films including A post Oslo history (1998)\, The satellite shooters (2001) and Like twenty impossibles (2003). She works as a freelance editor and cinematographer and also teaches. Salt of this Sea is her first feature film\, then she directed When I saw you. Wajib is her third feature film. \nAbout AFMI: The Arab Film and Media Institute is the first organization of its kind outside the Arab world\, a unique ecosystem to find\, nurture and develop Arab film and media projects. It was rebranded from the Arab Film Festival in 2017 to fulfill its broader mandate to empower local Arab talent to tell their communities’ stories in their own voices. Through film\, education\, mentorship\, and new media\, AFMI’s mission is to enhance public understanding of Arab culture and provide insight into the beauty\, complexity and diversity intrinsic to the Arab world. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV
DESCRIPTION:Meet director Amanda Kim for Q&A after the Thursday\, April 6\, 8:30pm show with introduction and post-screening Q&A moderation by Executive Producer Steve Jang! \n“The George Washington of Video Art” … “Cultural Terrorist” … “Citizen Zero of the Electronic Superhighway” … But who really was Nam June Paik\, pillar of the American avant-garde in the 20th century and arguably the most famous Korean artist in modern history? Director Amanda Kim tells\, for the first time\, the story of Paik’s meteoric rise in the New York art scene and his Nostradamus-like visions of a future in which “everybody will have his own TV channel.” Thanks to social media\, Paik’s future is now our present\, and NAM JUNE PAIK: MOON IS THE OLDEST TV shows us how we got here. \n“Amanda Kim’s feature doc is as sprightly as the man whose life she follows…There’s a great deal of charm and humor to Paik’s work\, and to this film\, but it’s anchored by his perceptiveness and ability to contemplate weighty themes”. – Fionnuala Halligan\, Screen

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Good Morning (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:Ozu’s hilarious Technicolor reworking of his silent I Was Born\, But . . . \, Good Morning (Ohayô) is the story of two young boys in suburban Tokyo who take a vow of silence after their parents refuse to buy them a television set. Shot from the perspective of the petulant brothers\, Good Morning is an enchantingly satirical portrait of family life that gives rise to gags about romance\, gossip\, and the consumerism of modern Japan.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:A Pre-recorded Q&A with BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin\nimmediately follows the film. \n“The writer-director’s use of colour 16mm\, his (now-famous) 1970s Bolex clockwork camera\, and post-production sound anoint Enys Men as the Kernowek equivalent of such classic English folk horrors as The Wicker Man.” ~ Tara Brady\, Irish Times \n“Are its cultish mysteries for everyone? Undoubtedly not. But if there’s a place in your heart for dark\, folky mind-benders that plug into the cosmic energy of remote\, oceanic terrain\, you should take a trip across Jenkin’s freaky landscape asap.” ~ Philip De Semlyen\, Time Out \nA wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace\, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Millennium Actress
DESCRIPTION:“A piece of cinematic art. It’s modern day Japanese animation at its best.”Kevin Williams\, Chicago Tribune \nBased loosely on the life and work of Ozu muse Hara Setsuko\, Satoshi Kon’s stunning sophomore feature is a kaleidoscopic\, time-skipping portrait of a reclusive actor looking back on her career. The clever meta-movie follows a two-man documentary crew as they set about interviewing Fujiwara Chiyoko\, a former studio star who withdrew from public life after retiring decades earlier. Her story transports the pair through a century of Japanese cinema and history\, as past and present\, memories and movie roles\, start to blur. Kon co-wrote the script with Perfect Blue screenwriter Murai Sadayuki; as in that film\, the boundaries between inner and outer realities are erased—albeit here in a more fanciful\, less maniacal manner! Musician Hirasawa Susumu\, long admired by Kon\, wrote the electronic score. The film garnered much acclaim and shared (with Miyazaki’s Spirited Away) the prestigious Japan Media Arts prize for animation. \nMILLENNIUM ACTRESS also plays on Monday\, April 10 with PERFECT BLUE . See both for $17 or either for $14. Details here.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Thelonious Monk: Rewind & Play
DESCRIPTION:In December 1969\, legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk ended his European concert tour with a performance at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Before the show\, he was invited to appear on a French television program to perform and answer questions in an intimate setting. Using newly discovered footage from this recording\, director Alain Gomis (FÉLICITÉ) reveals the disconnect between Monk and his interviewer\, Henri Renaud\, whose unwittingly trivializing approach conveys the casual racism and exploitation prevalent in the music industry at large. A fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary with extraordinary rarely-seen performances\, REWIND & PLAY offers a unique opportunity to see Monk in a way that very few people did.

Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Grains teaches an array of preparation techniques\, based around the wildly popular world of grains. We will whip up two complete meals in a bowl\, so you will leave happy and full of warmth and new knowledge! \nFirst we’ll go back to the early days – the way-early days\, when humans first began to stop hunting and gathering\, and settled down to farm. We’ll craft a hearty bowl of farro\, full of the earthy meatiness of wild mushrooms. We will discuss dried vs. fresh mushrooms\, and cook up a saute pan full of them. Add in the year-long availability of butternut squash\, and deal with prepping this amazingly bright but awkward squash. Our bowl of ancient goodness will finish off with the bite of mustard greens\, while we learn to prep these nutrition-bombs and add their flavor to perk up all of our cooking. \nFor our second dish\, we will dive into the world of spice. We will bloom some garlic\, ginger\, and curry powder\, igniting their flavors as we saute them in oil. While the aromas rise\, we will delve into spices and what makes them so valuable in our cooking. Then on to the star of our second dish\, quinoa as we cook it up lump free and tender. Add in the vegetable-meatiness of chickpeas – we will even discuss aquafaba and its culinary and cocktail uses as we pop the cans – and finish off with not-slimy eggplant and the sweet/sour pairing of dried fruit and creme fraiche. Throw in a side discussion of crafting creme fraiche at home\, just to save on your culinary dollars\, and our brief tour of the completely vegetarian wonderland of grains will come to an end. \nMENU \nFarro with Wild Mushrooms\, Butternut Squash\, and Mustard Greens \nCurried Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Chickpeas\, Eggplant\, Raisins\, and Creme Fraiche \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: wheat\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Little Richard: I Am Everything
DESCRIPTION:Director Lisa Cortés’ Sundance opening night documentary LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll\, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world\, the film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family\, musicians\, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars\, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression\, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life\, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God\, sex and rock n’ roll. The world tried to put him in a box\, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes – he was unabashedly everything.
