SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Thelonious Monk: Rewind & Play
DESCRIPTION:In December 1969\, legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk ended his European concert tour with a performance at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Before the show\, he was invited to appear on a French television program to perform and answer questions in an intimate setting. Using newly discovered footage from this recording\, director Alain Gomis (FÉLICITÉ) reveals the disconnect between Monk and his interviewer\, Henri Renaud\, whose unwittingly trivializing approach conveys the casual racism and exploitation prevalent in the music industry at large. A fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary with extraordinary rarely-seen performances\, REWIND & PLAY offers a unique opportunity to see Monk in a way that very few people did.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Grains - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Grains teaches an array of preparation techniques\, based around the wildly popular world of grains. We will whip up two complete meals in a bowl\, so you will leave happy and full of warmth and new knowledge! \nFirst we’ll go back to the early days – the way-early days\, when humans first began to stop hunting and gathering\, and settled down to farm. We’ll craft a hearty bowl of farro\, full of the earthy meatiness of wild mushrooms. We will discuss dried vs. fresh mushrooms\, and cook up a saute pan full of them. Add in the year-long availability of butternut squash\, and deal with prepping this amazingly bright but awkward squash. Our bowl of ancient goodness will finish off with the bite of mustard greens\, while we learn to prep these nutrition-bombs and add their flavor to perk up all of our cooking. \nFor our second dish\, we will dive into the world of spice. We will bloom some garlic\, ginger\, and curry powder\, igniting their flavors as we saute them in oil. While the aromas rise\, we will delve into spices and what makes them so valuable in our cooking. Then on to the star of our second dish\, quinoa as we cook it up lump free and tender. Add in the vegetable-meatiness of chickpeas – we will even discuss aquafaba and its culinary and cocktail uses as we pop the cans – and finish off with not-slimy eggplant and the sweet/sour pairing of dried fruit and creme fraiche. Throw in a side discussion of crafting creme fraiche at home\, just to save on your culinary dollars\, and our brief tour of the completely vegetarian wonderland of grains will come to an end. \nMENU \nFarro with Wild Mushrooms\, Butternut Squash\, and Mustard Greens \nCurried Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Chickpeas\, Eggplant\, Raisins\, and Creme Fraiche \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: wheat\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Little Richard: I Am Everything
DESCRIPTION:Director Lisa Cortés’ Sundance opening night documentary LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll\, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world\, the film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family\, musicians\, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars\, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression\, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life\, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God\, sex and rock n’ roll. The world tried to put him in a box\, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes – he was unabashedly everything.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV
DESCRIPTION:Meet director Amanda Kim for Q&A after the Thursday\, April 6\, 8:30pm show with introduction and post-screening Q&A moderation by Executive Producer Steve Jang! \n“The George Washington of Video Art” … “Cultural Terrorist” … “Citizen Zero of the Electronic Superhighway” … But who really was Nam June Paik\, pillar of the American avant-garde in the 20th century and arguably the most famous Korean artist in modern history? Director Amanda Kim tells\, for the first time\, the story of Paik’s meteoric rise in the New York art scene and his Nostradamus-like visions of a future in which “everybody will have his own TV channel.” Thanks to social media\, Paik’s future is now our present\, and NAM JUNE PAIK: MOON IS THE OLDEST TV shows us how we got here. \n“Amanda Kim’s feature doc is as sprightly as the man whose life she follows…There’s a great deal of charm and humor to Paik’s work\, and to this film\, but it’s anchored by his perceptiveness and ability to contemplate weighty themes”. – Fionnuala Halligan\, Screen

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Spirited Away
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature\, Hayao Miyazaki’s wondrous fantasy adventure is a dazzling masterpiece from one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animation. \nWandering through an abandoned carnival site\, 10-year-old Chichiro is separated from her parents and stumbles into a dreamlike spirit world\, where she is put to work in a bathhouse for the gods\, a place where all kinds of nonhuman beings come to refresh\, relax and recharge. Here she encounters a vast menagerie of impossibly inventive characters — shape-shifting phantoms and spirits\, some friendly\, some less so — and must find the inner strength to outsmart her captors and return to her family. Combining Japanese mythology with Through the Looking Glass-type whimsy\, Spirited Away cemented Miyazaki’s reputation as an icon of inspired animation and wondrous\, lyrical storytelling. \nThis screening of Spirited Away is co-presented by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts\, in conjunction with their exhibition Rituals of Devotion. Highlighting the exhibition’s themes of transformation through labors of love\, this beloved film traverses the thin veil between earthly and spirit worlds in a deeply imaginative exploration of the power of courage and friendship in the face of the unknown.

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Return to Seoul
DESCRIPTION:In Davy Chou’s dazzling second narrative feature\, a mercurial 25-year-old — born in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents — returns to her motherland in search of answers. \nBorn in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents\, Frédérique Benoît\, a.k.a. Freddie (Ji-min Park)\, is an arrogant\, mercurial\, and unyielding 25-year-old in search of answers. Unfamiliar with her native language or the intricacies of Korean culture\, she spontaneously travels “home” — there’s no place like it — after being rerouted by a typhoon. There\, she befriends a hotel employee named Tena (Guka Han)\, who sets her on the path to finding her biological parents and unearthing her origin story. While her mother remains a mystery\, Freddie successfully confronts her eager father (Kwang-rok Oh). But much is lost in translation and her impetuous journey leaves her already heavy baggage packed with more questions than answers. As Thomas Wolfe once wrote\, “You can’t go home again\,” and it’s not long before Freddie — still recognizable\, though with her foundations fully transformed and wanderlust as her North Star — is back in her motherland constructing another house of cards.

SUMMARY:Creativity Explored: Figuratively Speaking (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:Curated by none other than arts writer\, theater critic\, and professor Hilton Als\, Figuratively Speaking: Art in Advertising\, Writing in Art unearths the striking and multilayered work of Douglas Sheran. Sheran\, who worked at Creativity Explored from 1993 to 2008\, is known for his skillful\, gestural portraits that capture the strength and essence of his subject\, rather than the minute detail. Playing with the human form\, Sheran created a series of works in which he painted over female figures found in the pages of magazines. \nAccenting Sheran’s portraits are a work each by CE artists Bertha Otoya\, a Peruvian printmaker with a fondness for scrolls\, and Roland Record\, a seasoned artist whose gridded drawings call to mind maps or architectural blueprints.\nAbout Hilton Als \nHilton Als became a staff writer at The New Yorker in 1994 and a theatre critic in 2002. He began contributing to the magazine in 1989\, writing pieces for The Talk of the Town. He won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2017 for his New Yorker work. \nBefore coming to The New Yorker\, Als was a staff writer for the Village Voice and an editor-at-large at Vibe. Als edited the catalogue for the 1994-95 Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition “Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art.” His first book\, “The Women\,” was published in 1996. His most recent book\, “White Girls\,” a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the winner of the Lambda Literary Award in 2014\, discusses various narratives of race and gender. \nIn 1997\, the New York Association of Black Journalists awarded Als first prize in both Magazine Critique/Review and Magazine Arts and Entertainment. He was awarded a Guggenheim for creative writing in 2000 and the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism for 2002-03. In 2016\, he received Lambda Literary’s Trustee Award for Excellence in Literature. In 2018\, Als received the City College of New York’s Langston Hughes Medal. \nIn 2009\, Als worked with the performer Justin Bond on “Cold Water\,” an exhibition of paintings\, drawings\, and videos by performers\, at La MaMa Gallery. In 2010\, he co-curated “Self-Consciousness\,” at the VeneKlasen/Werner gallery\, in Berlin\, and published “Justin Bond/Jackie Curtis.” In 2015\, he collaborated with the artist Celia Paul to create “Desdemona for Celia by Hilton\,” an exhibition for the Metropolitan Opera’s Gallery Met. “Alice Neel\, Uptown\,” which Als curated in 2017\, was selected by three of Artforum’s critics as one of the ten best shows of the year. His accompanying book on the artist was also widely praised. \nAls is a teaching professor at the University of California\, Berkeley\, an associate professor of writing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts\, and has taught at Yale University\, Columbia University\, Wesleyan University\, and Smith College. He lives in New York City. \n(via The New Yorker) \nOpening Reception\nThursday\, April 13\, 2022 at the CE gallery and studio \n5:00 – 6:00 PM | VIP Donor Exclusive Preview\n(by invitation only for CE donors) \n6:00 – 8:00 PM | Public Reception\n(free and open to all!) \nMasks or face-coverings are required while not eating or drinking. This catastrophe triggered memories of the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta quake which shook San Francisco and the surrounding areas almost 34 years ago. \nAfter Loma Prieta\, the Bay Area led the way in seismic preparedness and earthquake mitigation. Land use reform\, building code updates\, retrofitting\, and early warning systems are just some of the improvements. But… is it enough? \nCould the devestation we see in Turkey happen here? \nHow do we prepare for the Big One? \nCould Loma Prieta happen again? \nWhat causes earthquakes? \nCan earthquakes be stopped? \nQuakes are never far from our minds here in California. Manny’s is excited to welcome Dr. Christine Goulet\, director of the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Senter and the country’s foremost earthquake expert\, for a conversation on the latest earthquake science and mitigation innovations. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nphoto credit: Khalil Hamra/LA Times \nABOUT DR. CHRISTINE GOULET \nChristine Goulet is the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Science Center. Her work and research interests are in the field of applied seismology with an aim to improve hazard assessment and positively impact societal resilience. \nDr. Goulet studied Geological Engineering in Canada and obtained her Ms. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from UCLA where she developed a graduate course on ground-motion characterization for engineers. She then worked as a consultant for several engineering and seismology projects. She joined the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research center (PEER) in 2010 where she co-led the NGA-East Program\, the largest ground-motion modeling project conducted in the U.S. to date. Joining SCEC in 2015\, she led the science and integrative activities for large-scale collaborative projects involving diverse disciplines that feed into earthquake hazard and that make extensive use of high-performance computing. Dr. Goulet served on several professional committees and boards\, including for the Seismological Society of America and its Eastern Section. \nABOUT THE USGS EARTHQUAKE SCIENCE CENTER \nThe Earthquake Science Center has been the flagship research center of the USGS in the western United States for more than 50 years. It is the largest USGS research center in the West and houses extensive laboratories\, scientific infrastructure\, and research facilities. \nThe mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Science Center is to collect a wide range of data on earthquakes\, faults\, and crustal deformation; conduct research to increase our understanding of earthquake source processes\, occurrence\, and effects; and synthesize this knowledge into probabilistic seismic hazard assessments\, aftershock forecasts and ground-shaking scenarios for anticipated major earthquakes. We disseminate these data products\, hazard assessments\, and research discoveries to scientists\, engineers\, emergency managers\, and the public.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The State of San Francisco Comic Shops
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that San Francisco is home to North America’s very first comic book store! Gary Arlington started the San Francisco Comic Book Company in the Mission in 1968. Gary’s ‘Church of the Underground Comix’ took off and led the way for the independent comic book industry. \nIn 1970 Ron Turner founded Last Gasp\, and started publishing comics by the artists and friends he met at Gary Arlignton’s shop. For 50 years\, he’s published subversive\, counter-culture and low-brow comics and books\, working with many of the best artists of the times and earning much acclaim over the years. \nIn 1989 Brian Hibbs at the age of 21 opened Comix Experience on Divisadero with focus on graphic novels and comics as an art form. Over the decades Brian has been a strong advocate for comic retailers through his column Tilting at Windmills\, and famously sued Marvel and won! \nIn 2009\, Leef Smith opened Mission: Comics & Art with the aim of making reading comics more accessible to the wider community and highlighting the full breadth of the world of comics and graphic novels. \nToday\, superheroes dominate our movie screens and pop culture. Comics and graphic novels are a huge part of modern day entertainment; and yet\, there are fewer comic book stores in San Francisco than ever before. Join Ron Turner\, Brian Hibs and Leef Smith for an animated conversation about the history of selling comics in San Francisco and the challenges and opportunities for the future. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS \nRon Turn is the founder of Last Gasp of San Francisco\, one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world. He’s been an outspoken supporter of artists\, writers\, and various misfits for over five decades. \nRon grew up in California’s central valley in the 1940s and ’50s\, moving between small dusty farm towns around Fresno. His publishing roots began in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. After serving as one of the first thousand Peace Corps volunteers\, he came back from Sri Lanka to Fresno for three years before coming to SF in ’67 for grad school in Experimental Psychology and became deeply immersed in the free speech\, civil rights\, and student protest movements. \nIn 1970\, Ron produced the first Last Gasp publication – an underground comic book entitled Slow Death Funnies\, created as a benefit for a Berkeley ecology center. Hundreds of genre-defining comic books were soon to follow\, including Zap Comix\, Weirdo Comix (edited by Robert Crumb)\, Slow Death\, Tales Of The Leather Nun\, Amputee Love\, Wimmen’s Comix\, Binky Brown Meets The Holy Virgin Mary\, Horny Biker Sluts\, and many more. Last Gasp books have been glowingly reviewed in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, Playboy magazine\, Publishers Weekly\, Library Journal\, School Library Journal\, Juxtapoz magazine\, the Guardian\, Hi-Fructose magazine\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Austin Chronicle\, American Book Review\, and the Los Angeles Times. Last Gasp was named “Best Local Publisher” in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2017 and 2018 (and maybe a few in between) by readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. \nBrian Hibbs has owned and operated Comix Experience in San Francisco for over 33 years\, was a founding member of the Board of Directors of ComicsPRO\, has sat on the Board of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund\, and has been an Eisner Award judge. Born in Boone County\, Missouri\, pre-teen years spent in Brooklyn\, New York\, Brian still somehow vainly believes that he’s actually a San Franciscan. Must be the hair. \nBrian opened Comix Experience at the ridiculously young age of 21\, on April Fool’s Day\, 1989. Brian lives with his luscious wife\, Tzipora\, and his son\, Ben\, in sunny Noe Valley. Since starting his column\, Tilting At Windmills in 1991\, Hibbs has been a de facto spokesperson for comic book retailers\, sharing his opinions on comics retail news and other industry headlines. He’s passionate about comics\, opinionated\, yes\, but he’s also a business man and the only ‘business’ he’s ever worked in\, comics. in 2015 Brian started the Graphic Novel Club which offers graphic novel fans the chance to receive a “single best brand new graphic novel\,” selected each month by employees of Comix Experience. \nLeef Smith grew up in ’70s hippy San Francisco with hand-made clothes\, a vegetarian diet and progressive politics\, as well as Legos\, Star Wars\, and comic books\, starting with Tintin. Later he was drawn into contemporary mainstream comics by the X-Men and Crisis on Infinite Earths\, and the rich complexity they offered. Growing up in the rich diversity of San Francisco led to him getting a degree in sociology from UCSC. He later spent a few years living in one of the art districts of Seoul\, Korea for a few years and traveling throughout Asia. \nIn 1997\, Leef returned to San Francisco and got swept into the Dot Com bubble and the web world\, spending several years as the webmaster for Visa’s intranet. This however did not extinguish his passion for the arts and setting his own sail\, and the dreams of his next career. An unforeseen layoff in the fall of ’08 provide that kick\, and he was inspired by his Buddhist practice\, Burning Man and the ideas of localized\, sustainable business practices\, to open his own art gallery combined with a comic book shop and “Mission: Comics & Art” was born.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Lost Weekend: A Love Story
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” explores the 18-month relationship (1973-1975) that John Lennon spent with May Pang\, his Chinese American assistant turned lover (on Yoko Ono’s insistence). With May’s help\, Lennon reunited with his son Julian and had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles – with the albums “Mind Games”\, “Walls and Bridges” which included his only #1 Hit Single “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”\, “Rock and Roll” and collaborated with Elton John\, David Bowie\, Harry Nilsson\, Mick Jagger\, and Ringo to name a few. Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self\, a naïve 22-year old experiencing her first unforgettable love.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:A Pre-recorded Q&A with BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin\nimmediately follows the film. \n“The writer-director’s use of colour 16mm\, his (now-famous) 1970s Bolex clockwork camera\, and post-production sound anoint Enys Men as the Kernowek equivalent of such classic English folk horrors as The Wicker Man.” ~ Tara Brady\, Irish Times \n“Are its cultish mysteries for everyone? Undoubtedly not. But if there’s a place in your heart for dark\, folky mind-benders that plug into the cosmic energy of remote\, oceanic terrain\, you should take a trip across Jenkin’s freaky landscape asap.” ~ Philip De Semlyen\, Time Out \nA wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace\, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Divergent: Art Show & Party!
DESCRIPTION:This is a special ONE NIGHT ONLY art show in the living room space. \nHave questions? Please reach out to Angelina@welcometomannys.com \nDIVERGENT \nWe believe that the experiences of Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color\, women\, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and other marginalized groups should be centered in the arts. Through different concepts and spontaneous ideas\, these artists employ a “Divergent” mind to present their art in new and creative ways. \nThe Artisits: \nMila Moldenhawer/ Dadadoodles: \nMila Moldenhawer is a visual artist who often works under the pseudonym\, “dadadoodles”. Born in 1996 in Berkley\, CA to Indian and Polish immigrants\, Mila now lives and works in Oakland\, CA. A first generation American and a trans-man\, he studied Art Practice and Sociology at UC Berkeley\, graduating in 2020. He has gone on to illustrate\, paint\, tattoo and make murals for a variety of clients big and small. Mila works across multiple mediums to maintain a malleability of mind and material dexterity. Known for his synthetic-graphic- aesthetic\, uncanny figures and flamboyant use of colors\, Mila blends and bends through figuration and abstraction. \nGregory Thomas \nGregory James Thomas is an Oakland based Queer & Black artist currently focusing on fine arts. Born and raised in the Bay Area\, they attended Sonoma State University and graduated with a degree in history and an interest in oil painting. The artist draws upon a number of visual sources to connect greater issues within society to the paintings they create. Playing with color\, perspective\, and shapes\, they wish to create illusions of space and dimension for viewers. \nTiffany Rahmati / t1FFanyRart \nTiffany is a portrait artist/muralist specializing in celebrating and uplifting the lives of those oppressed. Her love and hope in the human race is sustained through how she sees the divinity in others\, especially those whose voices have been silenced. Through her art\, she wishes to celebrate and immortalize souls. Her craft tells stories – stories of self-love\, stories of rich ancestral pasts\, and stories of a beautiful future. \nSarah Gendler/ Sarah Gee \nBay Area born trans and queer artist getting back into focusing on sculptural interests. \nMaria Pacheco \nFor over a decade\, Maria has been honing her skills in the arts. Originally awarded “Most Creative” for her fashion and visual designs from the Art Institute of SanFrancisco\, her love for painting soon became evident thanks to passionate art instructors. Colorful\, soft lucid depictions of plants\, clouds\, animals\, and self-portraits have compared Maria to Vincent van Gogh’s Impressionist style. \nA West Oakland native\, Maria began selling her custom clothing designs\, paintings and prints during Oakland’s First Friday in 2013. She’s produced fashion shows\, was visual merchandiser for well-known high fashion brands\, buyer and product placement director for Gump’s SF\, Ads and online stylist for Old Navy corporate\, painted a few murals around Oakland\, and was founder of Oakland Artist Collective in 2019. You can now find her styling interiors for Real Estate homes around the Bay Area while still dedicating time to her art.
