SUMMARY:Manny’s: The State of San Francisco Comic Shops
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that San Francisco is home to North America’s very first comic book store! Gary Arlington started the San Francisco Comic Book Company in the Mission in 1968. Gary’s ‘Church of the Underground Comix’ took off and led the way for the independent comic book industry. \nIn 1970 Ron Turner founded Last Gasp\, and started publishing comics by the artists and friends he met at Gary Arlignton’s shop. For 50 years\, he’s published subversive\, counter-culture and low-brow comics and books\, working with many of the best artists of the times and earning much acclaim over the years. \nIn 1989 Brian Hibbs at the age of 21 opened Comix Experience on Divisadero with focus on graphic novels and comics as an art form. Over the decades Brian has been a strong advocate for comic retailers through his column Tilting at Windmills\, and famously sued Marvel and won! \nIn 2009\, Leef Smith opened Mission: Comics & Art with the aim of making reading comics more accessible to the wider community and highlighting the full breadth of the world of comics and graphic novels. \nToday\, superheroes dominate our movie screens and pop culture. Comics and graphic novels are a huge part of modern day entertainment; and yet\, there are fewer comic book stores in San Francisco than ever before. Join Ron Turner\, Brian Hibs and Leef Smith for an animated conversation about the history of selling comics in San Francisco and the challenges and opportunities for the future. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS \nRon Turn is the founder of Last Gasp of San Francisco\, one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world. He’s been an outspoken supporter of artists\, writers\, and various misfits for over five decades. \nRon grew up in California’s central valley in the 1940s and ’50s\, moving between small dusty farm towns around Fresno. His publishing roots began in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. After serving as one of the first thousand Peace Corps volunteers\, he came back from Sri Lanka to Fresno for three years before coming to SF in ’67 for grad school in Experimental Psychology and became deeply immersed in the free speech\, civil rights\, and student protest movements. \nIn 1970\, Ron produced the first Last Gasp publication – an underground comic book entitled Slow Death Funnies\, created as a benefit for a Berkeley ecology center. Hundreds of genre-defining comic books were soon to follow\, including Zap Comix\, Weirdo Comix (edited by Robert Crumb)\, Slow Death\, Tales Of The Leather Nun\, Amputee Love\, Wimmen’s Comix\, Binky Brown Meets The Holy Virgin Mary\, Horny Biker Sluts\, and many more. Last Gasp books have been glowingly reviewed in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, Playboy magazine\, Publishers Weekly\, Library Journal\, School Library Journal\, Juxtapoz magazine\, the Guardian\, Hi-Fructose magazine\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Austin Chronicle\, American Book Review\, and the Los Angeles Times. Last Gasp was named “Best Local Publisher” in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2017 and 2018 (and maybe a few in between) by readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. \nBrian Hibbs has owned and operated Comix Experience in San Francisco for over 33 years\, was a founding member of the Board of Directors of ComicsPRO\, has sat on the Board of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund\, and has been an Eisner Award judge. Born in Boone County\, Missouri\, pre-teen years spent in Brooklyn\, New York\, Brian still somehow vainly believes that he’s actually a San Franciscan. Must be the hair. \nBrian opened Comix Experience at the ridiculously young age of 21\, on April Fool’s Day\, 1989. Brian lives with his luscious wife\, Tzipora\, and his son\, Ben\, in sunny Noe Valley. Since starting his column\, Tilting At Windmills in 1991\, Hibbs has been a de facto spokesperson for comic book retailers\, sharing his opinions on comics retail news and other industry headlines. He’s passionate about comics\, opinionated\, yes\, but he’s also a business man and the only ‘business’ he’s ever worked in\, comics. in 2015 Brian started the Graphic Novel Club which offers graphic novel fans the chance to receive a “single best brand new graphic novel\,” selected each month by employees of Comix Experience. \nLeef Smith grew up in ’70s hippy San Francisco with hand-made clothes\, a vegetarian diet and progressive politics\, as well as Legos\, Star Wars\, and comic books\, starting with Tintin. Later he was drawn into contemporary mainstream comics by the X-Men and Crisis on Infinite Earths\, and the rich complexity they offered. Growing up in the rich diversity of San Francisco led to him getting a degree in sociology from UCSC. He later spent a few years living in one of the art districts of Seoul\, Korea for a few years and traveling throughout Asia. \nIn 1997\, Leef returned to San Francisco and got swept into the Dot Com bubble and the web world\, spending several years as the webmaster for Visa’s intranet. This however did not extinguish his passion for the arts and setting his own sail\, and the dreams of his next career. An unforeseen layoff in the fall of ’08 provide that kick\, and he was inspired by his Buddhist practice\, Burning Man and the ideas of localized\, sustainable business practices\, to open his own art gallery combined with a comic book shop and “Mission: Comics & Art” was born.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Lost Weekend: A Love Story
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” explores the 18-month relationship (1973-1975) that John Lennon spent with May Pang\, his Chinese American assistant turned lover (on Yoko Ono’s insistence). With May’s help\, Lennon reunited with his son Julian and had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles – with the albums “Mind Games”\, “Walls and Bridges” which included his only #1 Hit Single “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”\, “Rock and Roll” and collaborated with Elton John\, David Bowie\, Harry Nilsson\, Mick Jagger\, and Ringo to name a few. Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self\, a naïve 22-year old experiencing her first unforgettable love.

Born in 1996 in Berkley\, CA to Indian and Polish immigrants\, Mila now lives and works in Oakland\, CA. Playing with color\, perspective\, and shapes\, they wish to create illusions of space and dimension for viewers. \nTiffany Rahmati / t1FFanyRart \nTiffany is a portrait artist/muralist specializing in celebrating and uplifting the lives of those oppressed. Her love and hope in the human race is sustained through how she sees the divinity in others\, especially those whose voices have been silenced. SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Dim Sum: Beyond Dumplings - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nDim Sum is not all about dumplings. We’ll set aside popular dumplings like har gow and shumai\, and visit some of the beloved dishes that are important supporting acts to complete a dim sum experience. Some of these dishes lend the textural element to the dim sum meal\, like sinking your teeth into the crispy\, sweet and chewy skin of the ham sui gok to discover the creamy savory pork filling inside. Forget the skill of tying a cherry stem with your tongue; try the challenge of nibbling all the skin from chicken feet bones! Some dishes contribute a punch of flavor to the dim sum like baby back ribs with douci; it has a deep umami flavor of salted black beans\, balanced by ginger and chilies\, all tied all together by the unctuous and porky fat of the ribs. Whether you’ve enjoyed these dishes before\, or never stepped into a dim sum parlor before\, cook with us and enjoy these dim sum classics with Linda as your guide! \nMENU \nYuba and Bamboo Rolls—Fried then Steamed Bean Curd Sheet Rolls filled with Pork\, Shrimp\, Bamboo Shoots\, and Wood Ear Mushrooms \nHam Sui Gok—Deep Fried Mochi (Sweet Rice Flour) Fritters filled with Pork\, Cilantro\, and Mushrooms (pictured) \nPhoenix Claws—Tender\, Fall off the Bone\, Braised Chicken Feet with Chilies and Fermented Soybean \nBaby Back Ribs with Douci—Steamed Koji-Marinated Pork Ribs with Salted Soy Beans\, Ginger and Chilies \nLor Mai Gai—Steamed Sticky Rice with Chicken\, Shiitake\, and Lap Cheung (Chinese Sausage) \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Shellfish\, Soy\, Wheat. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Desserts - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Desserts teaches you how to wrap up your home-cooked meals with everyone’s favorite course. Because we know there are never enough sweets\, we will craft three different dishes in this class! \nTo get started we will whip up a gluten-free and seasonal Blood Orange Meringue Pie. Talk about a show-stopper: it will begin with the simplicity of a press-n pistachio crust. Then on to making a citrus curd\, as we thicken and sweeten crimson blood orange juice into our filling. Topped with the science-heavy light as air clouds of an Italian meringue\, and grab your spoons in one hand and your phone in the other for this dessert. \nThen onto cookies\, with everyone’s favorite dunker biscotti. Want to learn to bake? What could be better than something called “twice-baked”? Measuring\, scaling\, and other precision excursions into the world of pastry\, plus the use of a savory herb just to ground Chef Mike in this world of sugar. \nFinally\, we will wrap up this dessert tour with the childhood favorite chocolate pudding\, all grown up and fancy. We will learn the basics of thickening (as if three desserts weren’t thickening enough!) with cornstarch and eggs\, and talk about chocolate as we use it in three forms for this dessert. Just to make it interesting we will add in a touch of chocolate’s ancient partner chile to make this a more grown up option. The class will also include a hearty salad and an array of cheeses and snacks\, as we know we cannot live on sweets alone. \nMENU \nBlood Orange Meringue Pie with Pistachio Crust \nRosemary\, Almond\, Orange Biscotti \nGrown up Chocolate Pudding \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: egg\, wheat\, dairy\, tree nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds.

SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: The Bay Area 5 - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:111 Minna Gallery is pleased to present their latest project\, ‘The Bay Area 5’ featuring the works of five renowned and highly prolific Bay Area artists. \nOpening on April 20th 2023\, the Bay Area 5 will feature the works of Max Ehrman (Eon 75)\, Seibot\, Nicole Hayden\, Josh Thurman\, and Messy Beck. All five of these artists have been active in the Bay Area throughout the last decade (and longer) creating murals throughout the streets of San Francisco\, the greater Bay Area and abroad. Ranging from backgrounds starting in graffiti\, street art\, illustration\, architecture and fine art; all of these artists have come to make a name for themselves in the Bay with full building-size murals\, expansive street art projects\, dozens of community-driven storefront murals during the pandemic and privately commissioned murals for clients ranging from small businesses in San Francisco to The Googleplex in Mountain View\, Ca. \nMax Ehrman goes under the moniker ‘Eon 75’ meaning Extermination.Of.Normality and 1975\, his birth year. Gaining much of his inspiration from studying architecture in Florida and Germany\, Max has painted murals and exhibited work in 10 countries and 3 continents. He has traveled with the ‘Meeting of Styles’ creating large scale works throughout Europe\, Asia and South America. \nSeibot (KT Seibert) is an extremely queer\, trans non-binary visual artist and muralist based in San Francisco. KT works primarily in acrylic and latex paint\, metal leaf\, ink\, glitter additives\, and high gloss finishes. KT is the co-owner of Moth Belly Gallery\, located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. \nNicole Hayden’s work explores a juxtaposition between pattern and figurative realism. She uses imagery from photos and magazines from the 1950s-60s with a vintage color palette to ignite a feeling of nostalgia. She intuitively marries this imagery underneath a colorful patterned foreground with the intention of creating a new open ended story for the viewer to interpret. \nJosh Thurman’s new works explore the combination of making 2D pieces look 3D\, and 3D pieces look 2D. His process of layering wood of different thicknesses provides a unique viewing experience from different angles making his oil paintings look 3D and lifelike. His work explores subjects ranging from cultural iconography to various pop culture based fan art all the way to original characters of his own creation. \nMessy Beck is a painter\, illustrator and muralist. Her work showcases narratives that explore themes of identity\, mental health and human connection. The contrast between her inviting color palettes and uniquely peculiar figures yield paintings that are constantly navigating a fine line between celebratory and disturbing. \nFeaturing art by:\nMax Ehrman (Eon 75) – @maxehrman\nSeibot – @seibot\nNicole Hayden – @nicolehaydenart\nJosh Thurman – @thurmanart\nMessy Beck – @messybeck \nEvent Info:\nWhat: ‘THE BAY AREA 5’\n	Music by DJ David Choong Lee\nWhen:\n Opening Reception Thursday 4/20/23 from 5:00 PM – 10:00 P M\n Open By Appointment Saturday 4/22/23 – 7/06/23 – reach out to:dyoungv@111minnagallery.com\n Closing Party Thursday 6/29/23\n Art Coming Down Thursday 7/06/23\nWhere: 111 Minna Gallery at 111 Minna St\, San Francisco\, CA 94105 \nAbout 111 Minna Gallery\nOver its 28 years\, 111 Minna Gallery has been recognized as: Winner: Best Art Gallery (2019 & 2018/SF Weekly)\, Winner of the Small Business of the Year Award (2018/SF Chamber of Commerce)\, and Winner of the 2018 Small Business of The Year Award at The Ebbies. 111 Minna continues to be a mainstay for art and culture in the bay area.
