SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Migguel Anggelo's LatinXoxo
DESCRIPTION:Brava Presents Migguel Anggelo’s\nLatinXoxo \nSat & Sun\, October 14 – 15\, 2023\nat 8pm on Brava’s Main Stage \nLatinXoxo is Migguel Anggelo’s nonconforming and self-accepting rallying cry: A break from “Latin Lover” clichés and his own Venezuelan father’s gendered expectations. \nLatinXoxo was designed to immerse an audience in a highly personal story. It is an artful collage of theater\, queer comedy\, physical movement\, and sumptuous song selections. The musical repertoire spans decades of pop hits\, his own original compositions\, and the Spanish boleros that defined his youth. \nWith equal doses of sensitivity and sensationalism\, “turning on a dime from anger to devastating tenderness” (Broadway World)\, Migguel Anggelo reminds us that our greatest love is right there in the mirror. With musical direction by Jaime Lozano and a book by C. Julian Jiménez\, LatinXoxo is conceived by Migguel Anggelo and directed by Adrian Alexander Alea.\nCreative team \nConceived by Migguel Anggelo\nBook: C. Julian Jiménez\nMusical Direction and Arrangements: Jaime Lozano\nDirected by: Adrian Alexander Alea \nCostumes: Ryan Park\nPiano and Guitar: Jaime Lozano\nGuitar: Saul Cosme\nBass: Yahir Montes\nPercussion: Daniel Prim\nStage Manager: Blake Kile\nManagement: David Stark (Jupiter Moons Productions) & Greg Kastelman (Unbound Artists) \nMigguel will be performing original arrangements by Jaime Lozano of polular songs such as: \nBesamé Mucho\, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” & “Alejandro”\, “Sigo Siendo El Rey”\, “Fever”\, “Make You Feel My Love”\, “Piensa En Mi”\, “Piel Canela”\, Beyonce’s “XO”\, Simon Diaz’ “Tonada Del Cabrestero”. \nTICKETS\n$35 orchestra front\n$30 orchestra back\n$20 mezzanine\n*plus fees

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Kinetech Arts: AURUM
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco has its roots in the gold rush: in the mid-19th century\, its population grew from a few hundred to tens of thousands\, attracting immigrants worldwide. Kinetech Arts’s multi-media project entitled Aurum (gold in Latin) portrays a modern-day “gold rush” in San Francisco\, with the world’s tech capital viewed through the events of 1849. Humanity is in a disruptive transition era analogous to that time of proliferation\, as developments in AI are growing exponentially. By reflecting on the gold rush\, when greed fueled ecological and human tolls\, especially on the indigenous population and exploited workers\, this project reflects on our place within a delicate ecosystem. This ecosystem now includes the intimate relationships between humans and the digital world.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Swimming With Lesbians
DESCRIPTION:Brava Presents\nSwimming With Lesbians \nOctober 6 – 22\, 2023\nFri & Sat at 7:30pm\nSun at 5:00pm \nPREVIEW on Friday\, October 6 \nBrava proudly presents the West Coast Premiere of Marga Gomez’s fourteenth one person show\, Swimming With Lesbians. This full steam farce takes place aboard “The Celesbian\,” regarded as the most notorious cruise ship on the high seas. Throughout the performance Marga morphs into a boatload of hilarious queer characters including: Isabelle a disgraced Lacrosse player yearning for her first Lesbian affair\, Captain Debbie who is always ready to go down in the ship\, and the outwardly jovial but secretly meek bingo caller Pru Perez. Things veer off course when Captain Debbie orders Pru to conduct pool games on the Lezzo Deck. How these intrepid Lesbians navigate through danger\, lust and endless buffets is a seafaring tale that will never be told in Florida. Marga has been subliminally developing Swimming With Lesbians since the 1990’s when she worked as a cruise ship entertainer. \nWritten and Performed by Marga Gomez\nCreative Team: Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe (Black To The Future) Jackie Marchand (Power Rangers) Sarah Toby Moore (Atomic Comic) Monica Palacios (San Francisco Mi Amor) and David Schweizer (Latin Standards.)\nPhotos: Jim McCambridge\nGraphic Design: David Hawkins \nThe show runs 65 minutes with no intermission and is recommended for mature audiences. Full bar will be open for 21 and over.

SUMMARY:Public Works: AYLI 13-Year Anniversary w/ Ben UFO\, Eris Drew\, DJ Haram + More
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 14th\, 9:30pm – 3:30am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nIn addition to online pre-sales\, tickets will be available at the door night of. \nAs You Like It (AYLI) and Public Works invites to celebrate 13-years of community rooted in a shared taste in quality music\, late nights and artistic self-expression. The Bay Area’s vast contributions to dance music culture run deep underground—a family tree rooted in psychedelic rave\, radical funk\, and electronic invention\, steeped in global influences. Beginning in 2010\, AYLI extended this sparkling legacy with a decade of parties dedicated to quality\, intimacy\, and an intensely local glow. \nTimelessness—reflected in AYLI’s beloved influences from Detroit and Chicago to NYC\, Paris\, London\, Tokyo\, and Berlin—as well as diversity\, evidenced by each party’s distinctive lineup\, are the crew’s watchwords\, deployed across an ever-changing techno landscape. Outdoor picnics in Golden Gate Park\, undergrounds in Oakland\, ambitious all-night affairs that brought together some of the most excitingly varied lineups of DJs and performers in Bay Area memory—these were what grew AYLI’s stature as a party powerhouse. \nOver the course of a very busy first 10 years\, AYLI debuted dozens of international and domestic touring artists—Nicolas Jaar\, Ben Klock\, Maya Jane Coles\, Peggy Gou\, and Robert Hood\, among them—while always giving an equal platform to the incredible local talent on offer\, a sophisticated balance that showcased Bay Area excellence and nurtured budding artists’ careers. An As You Like It podcast\, launched in 2011\, connected that local ethos to the global community\, featuring scores of dance music legends while broadening the Bay Area’s influence\, and introducing core AYLI players to the world. \nBut the unity of close family in a fractious time was what grounded AYLI’s essential presence on the scene. Weathering increased anti-nightlife prejudice from the authorities\, a crass tech invasion that out-priced and exiled many local artists\, and the tragic loss of several members and associates in the Ghost Ship Fire\, the AYLI crew and its devoted followers has continued to build a resilient underground movement together. \nIn the shadow of the current pandemic\, AYLI reached out to the world via its collaboration with Fault Radio\, As You Like It Coast-to-Coast\, a virtual party series\, AYLI Radio on Sutrofm.net\, and the launch of the AYLI Ground Level podcast series\, energizing and connecting the community further. \nAYLI Links: \nwww.ayli-sf.com \nwww.ayli.bandcamp.com \nwww.twitter.com/aylisf \nwww.instagram.com/aylisf \nwww.soundcloud.com/as-you-like-it \nwww.discogs.com/label/1940068-As-You-Like-It-Recordings \nLINEUP: \nMain Room \nBen UFO \nEris Drew \nOne A \nLoft hosted by Sutrofm \nDJ Haram \nMichael Claus Live \nOso Feo B2B Banal \nInfinite Jess \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support.

SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House: Huarango
DESCRIPTION:Huarango is a contemporary proposal of Afro-Peruvian music. Anchored in the strong presence of Afro-Peruvian percussion: Cajon\, Cajita\, and Quijada de Burro (donkey’s jawbone); instruments that are part of the history of this population and have manifested themselves as symbols of resistance for African descendants in Peru. \nFeaturing:\nPierr Padilla – Cajon\nPedro Rosales – Congas & Voice\nKyla Danysh – Violin & Voice\nJavier Trujillo – Guitar\nAyla Davila – Bass \nSaturday\, October 14th\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $25 – $35/ (Door)$30-$35 \nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \n“The Huarango is a tree that grows on the southern coast of Peru. It is characterized by its great resistance. It has strong roots that can measure up to 70 meters (230 feet) deep\, this\nallows the tree to live up to one thousand years self-sufficiently feeding itself from the water in the subsoil. Therefore\, it survives the arid land and hostile climate even creating new ecosystems for the habitat of other species. \nOur Huarango is a musical project born in the city of Oakland\, California based on Afro-Peruvian musical roots and the cultural heritage of its people. Huarango has the purpose of being an agent of diffusion of Afro-Peruvian culture in the San Francisco Bay Area\, and in all the spaces where we can take our music.”
