SUMMARY:500 Capp: David Ireland - The Condition Where Art Would Disappear
DESCRIPTION:David Ireland \nTHE CONDITION WHERE ART WOULD DISAPPEAR \nOpening June 24\, 2023 \nExhibition run: June 24 – December 16\, 2023 \nhttps://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MTczOTEz \nTHE CONDITION WHERE ART WOULD DISAPPEAR brings out some of David Ireland’s most iconic works to explore questions surrounding conceptual art and the issues artists confront when deep in studio work. The rooms of the House will be populated with works that will\, for the first time since 500 Capp Street’s public opening\, reconstruct what was in these spaces when Ireland was working and living at 500 Capp Street from 1974 to 2004. These iconic tableaux will illuminate how Ireland navigated between the correlation of work and site and will cast light on the point in his work where the studio became the central object of the art itself. On view will be such treasures as Marcel B. (1980-1994)\, a cascade of sardine cans that serve as a pun-like homage to fellow artist Marcel Broodthaers; Ireland’s sculptural tribute to Yves Klein; and his South China Chairs (1979)\, arranged as they were with the well-known Broom Collection with Boom (1978/1988) between them.

SUMMARY:500 Capp: Paule Anglim Archive Room (Opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets – https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MTczOTEz \nIn conjunction with this exhibition of Ireland’s work\, 500 Capp Street celebrates the launch of its newly-named Paule Anglim Archive Room\, opening the space to the public for the first time for a special archival exhibition. Named after one of San Francisco’s most important gallerists who represented and championed Ireland and many other local conceptual artists\, the Paule Anglim Archive Room houses objects\, artworks\, photographs\, and ephemera that serve as an essential time capsule of the conceptual art movement of the 1970s-90s in the Bay Area and beyond. In 2022\, Anglim’s estate donated several small artworks\, papers\, and more to 500 Capp Street\, enriching the archive with works by many of Ireland’s contemporaries including Gay Outlaw\, Paul Kos\, Enrique Chagoya\, William T. Wiley\, Tom Marioni\, Tony Labat\, and Alan Rath. Select works from the newly expanded collection will be on display alongside pieces from Ireland’s personal collection and works by female conceptual artists from his circle including Hannah Wilke\, Mildred Howard\, Katherine Sherwood\, Amy Trachtenberg\, Ann Hamilton\, Mie Preckler\, Catherine Wagner\, and Peggy Ingalls. Also on view are other donated or loaned works including several gifted by Jim Melchert and William T. Wiley’s 1977 book\, Suite of Daze\, on loan from printer Timothy Berry. Screening in the Garage\, will be Same Difference (1975)\, a film by Al Wong with sound by Terry Fox on loan from Canyon Cinema. Catalogs\, personal correspondence\, and other ephemera documenting the lives and careers of Ireland and his contemporaries will also be on display.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Summer Smoke - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nSmoked food\, without the truck-towed rig. Smoke\, San Francisco style. Suitable for apartment kitchens\, albeit with the windows wide open. We will start with some beautiful trout\, just kissed with the smoke and then folded into butter and dill for an amazing spread. Then we will smoke duck breast\, and serve them as the star of a salad of grilled bitter greens\, stone fruit\, and feta cheese. We will then use the last of our smoke on some traditional queso queso\, to make a dip so sexy it begs for each and every chip we dip. \nMENU \nHome Smoked Trout Rillettes \nSmoked Duck Breast Salad; Charred Nectarine\, Grilled Radicchio\, Feta Cheese Salad \nSmoked Cheese Queso Dip \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: dairy\, wheat\, fish. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

For vacationers and locals alike\, summertime brings vibrant seasonal dishes. First\, a platter of smoky eggplant salad with tomatoes\, fresh oregano\, briny capers and fruity extra virgin olive oil. Besides it\, a dish of tarama – a whipped pink-hued dip made from fish roe. On a neighboring plate\, a crisp pissaladière hot from the oven; this is a traditional French ‘pizza’ from the coastal city of Nice. The crust is topped with sweet caramelized onions\, briny Mediterranean anchovies\, and Provençal olives. \nAs our main dish: a final fruit de mer – fruit of the sea: steamed clams served in a rich broth with sweet summer corn. \nImagine a warm salty breeze as we make a summer Mediterranean holiday from our San Francisco classroom! \nMENU \nRoasted Eggplant Salad with Tomatoes\, Capers\, Fresh Oregano\, Parsley\, Garlic & Fruity Extra Virgin Olive Oil \nTarama—Salty Fish Roe whipped with Bread\, Lemon Juice & Extra Virgin Olive Oil \nPissaladière—Sweet Caramelized Onions\, Briny Anchovies & Olives Top this French “Pizza” \nSteamed Clams in a Rich Broth with Summer Corn \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Fish\, Shellfish\, Egg\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nZoé McLaughlin was born in Paris and raised in San Francisco. She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked in restaurants in France while she wrote and published her first cookbook – a collection of family recipes influenced by her multicultural upbringing. She now lives in San Francisco\, where she works in the non-profit culinary world and hosts online cooking demonstrations. She has a passion for bringing together the diverse flavors and culinary traditions of the Bay Area with the time tested techniques of classical French cooking.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Basic Knife Skills - In Person

Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nJoin 18 Reasons Chef and Culinary Instructor\, Mike Weller\, for a class in the basics of using your chef’s knife at home. We will discuss the ins and outs of knife use\, care and safety. You will walk away knowing how to maintain a sharp edge and the best way to cut vegetables and herbs. This is a great class for beginners. \nThis class includes our Knife Skills manual for reference when cooking at home. The vegetables cut in this class will be used by each student to create their own individual salad\, with a shared buffet of vinaigrette\, fried shallots\, minced chili\, roasted peanuts\, and optional roast chicken meat to garnish.

Despite the constant and varied selection of produce we enjoy year-round in California markets\, the joy of seasonality is still precious – whether it’s the first citrus\, stone fruit\, fig\, or fava of the year. Francesca and Aaron will recreate a classic dish from their shared restaurant experience by giving it a California twist\, inspired by the farmer’s markets of the Bay\, so we can enjoy the flavors of summer together. \nNote: this ticket page is for the first seating from 6-7 pm. We do not have reserved seating and dining will take place at communal tables. For our second seating at 7:30 pm\, please click here. \nMENU \nGnocchi with Farmer’s Market Vegetables \nSeasonal Summer Salad \nThis menu is vegetarian\, but contains the following common allergens: Wheat\, Eggs\, Dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to attend\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. Because we are cooking in large batches\, we are very limited in accommodating allergens and dietary restrictions. \nFrancesca is the Community Programs Director at 18 Reasons. A career in the food service industry sparked a deep interest in all things food. After completing an M.S. in Food Systems at the University of Vermont\, Francesca moved to the Bay Area to work at 18 Reasons\, where she finds constant culinary inspiration. Francesca is excited to connect with a different facet of the 18 Reasons community through the honor of hosting a community dinner. \nAaron Shapiro was born in Michigan and began working in restaurants at the young age of 15. He began his culinary career in Vermont\, working at small inns and fine dining restaurants such as Shelburne Farms and The Kitchen Table Bistro. When not working in restaurants he enjoys fly fishing and snowboarding. Aaron is currently the executive sous chef at Flour and Water and has a passion for farm produce and wild foraged foods. \nABOUT COMMUNITY DINNER \nOnce a month\, we open our doors to friends new and old\, welcoming all to our share a table and a delicious meal. Every month is something different\, but tickets are always $18 and always tasty. Wine and beer are for sale at the event. Kids welcome!
