The time to act is now and she wants you to join her in this fight and have fun while doing it! \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. This package includes just 1 ticket for yourself and a donation that goes towards towards subsidized tickets for other community members. \nDoors will open at 5:30pm \nProgram will begin at 6:30pm \nAbout Jane Fonda \nJane Seymour Fonda is a film and television icon\, entrepreneur\, and activist. Jane has earned two Academy Awards\, two British Academy Film Awards\, seven Golden Globe Awards\, a Primetime Emmy Award\, the AFI Life Achievement Award\, the Golden Lion Honorary Award\, the Honorary Palme d’Or\, and the Cecil B. She has starred in dozens of films over 60 years including Barbarella; Klute; The Shoot Horses\, Don’t They; Coming Home; On Golden Pond; The China Syndrome; 9 to 5; Monster-In-Law; and The Morning After to name only a few. She was co-lead with Lily Tomlin on Netflix’s 7-season hit show Grace and Frankie. Fonda is the subject of an HBO original documentary entitled Jane Fonda in Five Acts\, directed by the documentarian Susan Lacy. \nIn 1982\, Jane released her first exercise video\, Jane Fonda’s Workout\, which became the highest-selling VHS of the 20th century. She made over 22 videos in the 1980’s and 1990’s which collectively sold over 17 million copies. \nShe has been a political activist her entire adult life\, involved in multiple anti-war movements\, the civil rights movement\, in support of the Black Panthers\, in the fight for LBGTQ rights\, in feminist struggles\, and now\, in the fight of her life to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. \nJane has been targeted and arrested for her activities throughout her life but remains committed to doing everything she can to fight for justice for all and to live joyfully while doing it.

SUMMARY:Voss Gallery: The Tracy Piper "SEEN Volume 2" Pop-Up Show & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:RSVP to enjoy a special viewing of “SEEN Volume 2\,” The Tracy Piper’s second iteration of a collaborative art project of 50 eye paintings that were made during the Spring of 2023. \nFor this continual series\, the artist organized an open call for her collectors\, fans\, and fellow artists to be featured as one of her models. Each participant answered the same question: What does it mean to feel seen? Each painting and response is featured in the artist’s third book aptly titled “SEEN Volume 2\,” which is now available for preorder. The Tracy Piper will also be available for in-person signings during the event. \nCome dressed in your artsy best and meet fellow art lovers while taking pleasure in the artist’s works in the gallery’s lower level space [The Down Low]—in addition to the current group exhibition on the main level titled “Postcards from Paradise.” \nThe paintings will be on view through June 24th or until they’re purchased. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday\, 12-6PM or by appointment. \n“What does it mean to feel seen? \nPainting people is an intimate act: finding each freckle\, how the eyelash curls\, the weathered lines\, a sharp or messy eyebrow… not one face is like another. And each answer to the question\, ‘What does it mean to feel seen?’ is as nuanced as those faces\, every one different and unique. Yet we all feel this question in our souls. Each of us circles this question at some point in our lives. This project is a window not just into each participant’s life\, but also into the whole of what it means to be alive today. \nI couldn’t stop at just one book\, at the wisdom of only 50 people. I couldn’t stop because I know what it means to not feel seen. Each person who signs on to this project is taking a huge leap into self-acceptance — by saying I am worthy of being in the light\, my words mean something\, my freckles are important\, my wrinkles are beautiful\, that I made it\, I am here\, now. To get to be a conduit for this kind of true transformation — by painting each person as they are — represents a window into my soul. It transforms me. How rare the opportunity to have these moments of connection\, forged by an honest gaze and a heartfelt word. I intend for this book and hopefully many more after to stand as a testament to this community. To the people who wanted to be seen\, with no strings attached\, and took the leap. Those late nights staring into each of your eyes will always be worth it. I SEE you… and I am so glad you are here.” \n—The Tracy Piper

SUMMARY:Manny’s: June Art Show Opening: Juan Manuel Carmona
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Friday of the month as we celebrate our new June artist\, Juan Manuel Carmona! We will have live music\, delicious drinks\, and amazing vibes in the front cafe space so don’t miss out! \nAbout Juan Manuel Carmona \nHaving been born in Texas along the Mexican border\, raised in Mexico\, and then spending the majority of my adult life in the USA\, my work is greatly informed by my binational Mexican/American heritage\, my queer identity\, and the intersection of the LGBTQI and Latino communities of San Francisco. I have explored these communities and concepts through varied and diverse artistic approaches\, creating murals\, posters\, sculptures\, and art installations that in some way satisfy my own personal curiosity\, respond to the immediate context\, honor the message\, and impact the spectator. As I continue to explore the power of public art\, I hope to use my work to inspire individuals with the pride and love that I feel for my two countries of heritage\, my LGBTQI community\, and to bring focus to the duality of millions of Mexican-Americans living and traveling between both sides of this border. \nFor more of his work\, visit: https://juanmanuelcarmona.com

DESCRIPTION:Weathervane Productions presents:\nThe Road to Mecca\nWritten by Athol Fugard\nDirected by Timothy Near \nJune 4-30 at Z Below \nAthol Fugard’s incandescent and thought-provoking The Road to Mecca comes to San Francisco’s Z Below. Obie Award winner Timothy Near directs this production\, reuniting with Broadway actor Victor Talmadge (David Mamet’s November\, The King & I\, The Lion King) and award-winning actor and producer Wendy vanden Heuvel (Signature Theatre\, Guthrie Theatre\, Magic Theater). The powerhouse trio\, who collaborated on a hit run of Fugard’s A Lesson from Aloes at Z Below in 2018\, will be joined by exciting regional actress Kodi Jackman for this production. \nSet in a small South African town\, The Road to Mecca introduces eccentric aging widow Miss Helen (based on artist Helen Martins)\, who fills her house and garden with sculptures and statues that face Mecca\, transforming her world into a magical paradise and testament to artistic freedom in the midst of repression and political turbulence. A struggle ensues as a young schoolteacher and social worker advocates for the struggling artist\, while her conservative pastor insists that Miss Helen is declining and should be moved. Known for his politically charged work opposing Apartheid\, internationally-acclaimed South African playwright\, director\, actor\, and novelist Athol Fugard was deemed “a rare playwright\, who could be a primary candidate for either the Nobel Prize in Literature or the Nobel Peace Prize” by The New Yorker. The Road to Mecca was initially presented Off-Broadway where it won a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and was adapted into a film starring Fugard alongside Yvonne Bryceland\, and Kathy Bates. Its Broadway premiere in 2011 was lauded as a “powerful” (The New York Times) work that “glows with a rare luminosity and intensity…eloquent and transforming” (The Christian Science Monitor). \nGet Tickets – https://ci.ovationtix.com/34231/production/1159145 \nShow Schedule\nPreviews: Sun 6/4 6pm\, Tues 6/6 7:30pm\, Wed 6/7 7:30pm\nOpening Night: Thurs 6/8 7:30pm\nRun of Show: 6/9 – 6/30\n Wed\, 7:30pm\n Thurs\, 7:30pm\n Fri\, 7:30pm\n Sat\, 7:30pm\n Sun\, 2pm \nThis show runs approximately two hours and 30 minutes and will have one intermission.\nCast \nVictor Talmadge\nWendy vanden Heuvel\nKodi Jackman\nCreative/Production Team \nDirector: Timothy Near\nScenic Designer: Erik Flatmo\nCostume Designer: Meg Neville\nLighting Designer: Kurt Landisman\nSound Designer: Jake Rodriguez\nDramaturg: Kellen Hoxworth\nProduction Stage Manager: Christina Hogan\nAssistant Stage Manager: Enkidu Khan\nProduction Manager: David Robertson\nExecutive Producer: Kendra Bator and Tom Casserly\nProducing Associates: Tess Capern\nArtwork: Caspar Newbolt\nPublicity and Marketing: Lauren Goldfarb\, Carla Befera & Co.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Unspeakable Vice: Queer North Beach Before The Castro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of San Francisco’s original ‘gayborhood’: North Beach. A century before Stonewall\, the rainbow flag\, or Harvey Milk\, queer-friendly entertainment venues were all over the Barbary Coast and provided some of the earliest prototypes of LGBTQ spaces and often showcasing revolutionary gender non-conformity. \nSee how people of color and women—often underrepresented in queer narratives—created a foundation for 1970s activists in the Castro and gave the “unspeakable vice” of the Victorians a voice. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT OUR GUEST \nShawn Sprockett is the creator and host of Unspeakable Vice\, a walking tour he developed after studying his neighborhood’s queer history. This historical tour of San Francisco’s lost queer nightlife scene examines the origins of queer identity and wonders how it might evolve next. \nShawn is also an adjunct professor at the California College of Arts in the graduate Interaction Design program\, where he teaches visual design in the Fall and his own class\, Futureproof\, on creative thinking and speculative design\, in the Spring. His work has spanned a wide breadth of industries over the last sixteen years\, from Condé Nast to Google\, Apple\, and Airbnb. He has trained under legendary designers\, like Milton Glaser and Stefan Sagmeister. He’s also been a part of big business transformations like IBM’s implementation of design-thinking at scale and Facebook’s forays into the metaverse. \nOne interesting fact about Shawn: He has nearly a dozen design-centric tattoos that symbolize each city he’s lived in.

DESCRIPTION:$22 advance and $25 day of show \nBillie Marten\nBillie – born Isabella Sophie Tweddle – got her early start in music thanks to parents who surrounded her with the music of Nick Drake\, John Martyn\, Joni Mitchell\, Joan Armatrading\, Kate Bush\, Loudon Wainwright III and northern folk artist Chris Wood (who once told a nine-year-old Billie to “go for it!”). The family lived in the cathedral city Ripon\, North Yorkshire\, where Billie grew up in and around the Dales. “I feel a lot of emotion [in nature]\,” she says. “Like this extreme form of empathy. I find it a very comforting blanket. It cradles you\, it’s always there. It’s not going away.”\nBillie was then signed to Chess Club Records\, an imprint of Sony\, “the day before my Maths GCSE”. I was revising and then signing in this big glass boardroom.” Not long afterwards\, she was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2016\, making fans out of Radio 1 tastemakers like Annie Mac and Huw Stephens. Her critically acclaimed debut album\, Writing of Blues and Yellows\, was a diarist\, open-hearted collection of quietly beautiful songs released in 2016\, when she was still just 17. The following year\, she moved to London\, where she worked on her 2019 follow-up\, Feeding Seahorses ByHand\, which The Line of Best Fit declared a “gentle and reserved masterpiece”. \nTowards the end of 2019\, Billie underwent a total overhaul\, leaving Sony and choosing a new management team. She signed to Fiction records\, a division of Universal\, in lockdown via zoom. She then went back into the studio and reunited with producer Rich Cooper – whom she worked with on Blues and Yellows – Billie felt empowered to experiment andrediscover herself. “I picked up the bass instead of the guitar – which made all my rhythms different\, because I can’t play bass\,” she laughs. “That made everything a lot punchier and more direct.” With Rich adding drums to the songs as they were being written\, the sound they developed together was one with a rapid pulse and rich instrumentation. The list of inspirations Billie brought to the studio roamed from krautrockers Can – “their rhythms are just bizarre\, and don’t make any sense” – to Broadcast\, Arthur Russell\, and Fiona Apple. “It was such freedom to play\, and just be\, and explore different corners of me that I hadn’t before.” \nSince then\, she has toured frequently throughout the UK and US\, returning home to record her fourth record\, soon to be released in early 2023. Her writing themes explore social commentary\, the struggle with modernity vs tradition\, nature\, mental health\, relationships\, and a general voyeurism on the world as she sees it.

SUMMARY:Asian Art Museum: Beyond Bollywood Dance Series: Queering Dance Traditions
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Pride Month and our local LGBTQ+ community\, we feature performers of Indian and Cambodian dance traditions who challenge assumptions about gender roles in dance and recontextualize traditional dances for the 21st century. Gender fluidity is an age-old concept: in Buddhist texts\, bodhisattvas transcend gender distinctions; depictions of Asian deities are often androgynous; and on the stage\, performers in many Asian traditions play both genders. \nPrumsodun Ok\, founder of Cambodia’s first gay dance company\, considers the inherent queerness in the sacred art of Khmer dance. His work revitalizes and brings global attention to an art form that was nearly wiped out with the majority of its practitioners in the Khmer Rouge genocide of the late 1970s. \nIf ancient South Asian statues came to life\, how would they express the queer stories that seem to exist in these cultures? Ishami Dance Company explores this idea\, celebrating the marginalized stories of those who were once part of a precolonial mainstream. \nABOUT THE PERFORMERS \nIshami Dance Company was created by Amit Patel and Ishika Seth to explore limitless creative possibilities through the medium of South Asian contemporary dance. Their vision is to create works that tread the line between traditional and modern\, dismantling social constructs to amplify marginalized voices and stories. They value inclusivity and cultural exchange\, encouraging artists to cultivate individuality and intentionality while crossing cultural boundaries to share stories and spark conversation. \nBorn to Khmer refugees in the United States\, Prumsodun Ok rose from the poverty and violence-stricken inner city of Long Beach to become the new face of Khmer dance. He uses art to heal\, illuminate\, and empower\, reviving the spirit of his people from the enduring forces of conflict. A champion of Khmer culture\, he is the founding artistic director of Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA\, Cambodia’s first gay dance company\, which Channel NewsAsia describes as “one of the most revolutionary dance troupes in Cambodia… a dance troupe like no other.”  He currently lives in Phnom Penh\, Cambodia\, working at the intersection of cultural preservation\, artistic innovation\, education\, LGBTQ advocacy\, and environmental stewardship.

SUMMARY:Victoria Theatre: Ray of Light Theatre presents Spring Awakening in Concert
DESCRIPTION:One weekend only! June 8-11\, 2023 \nVictoria Theatre\, San Francisco \nDirection by ELIZA LEONI • Musical Direction by BEN PRINCE • Choreography by JILL JACOBS \nBook & Lyrics by STEVEN SATER • Music by DUNCAN SHEIK \nBased on the play by Frank Wedekind \nThe winner of eight Tony Awards\, including Best Musical\, told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through what Entertainment Weekly called\, “the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade\,” Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality\, sexuality and rock and roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years. \nIt is Germany\, 1891\, a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body and wonders aloud where babies come from… until Mama tells her to shut it and put on a proper dress. Elsewhere\, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy\, Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can’t concentrate on anything… not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson. One afternoon\, in a private place in the woods\, Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they’ve ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another’s arms\, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. When even his one adult friend\, Melchior’s mother\, ignores his plea for help\, he is left so distraught that he can’t hear the promise of life offered by his outcast friend\, Ilse. Naturally\, the Headmasters waste no time in pinning the “crime” of Moritz’s suicide on Melchior to expel him. And soon\, Mama learns that her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child. \nThis celebration of rebellion provides the perfect opportunity to feature performers of all types\, as well as the creative flexibility with the use of costumes\, set pieces and lighting. Featuring a pop rock score\, this is an ideal show for talented vocalists with strong acting abilities. Join this group of late nineteenth century German students on their passage as the navigate teenage self-discovery and coming of age anxiety in a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion in the daring\, remarkable Spring Awakening. \n#SFSA #SFSpringAwakening

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: ChrisMastersDance: Mausoleum
DESCRIPTION:In this new evening-length work\, which is site-adaptive for being performed in the round and in the proscenium\, dancers become videographers\, redirecting the audience’s gaze through live simulcast projections. Overstimulating and nonstop\, the work interrogates our overconsumption of media\, addiction to drama\, inertia that concretizes unsustainable forms of life and work\, and the inextricable link between love and loss—death only matters if care is established. \nChrisMastersDance is a Brooklyn-based contemporary dance company built by a team of interdisciplinary collaborators and directed by Chris Masters. Founded in 2012\, the organization’s philosophy in dance-making is that the work should function as a container\, seamlessly blending movement invention\, theoretical investigation\, and character-driven theatricality. Like a container\, the work can be unpacked in myriad ways\, allowing for greater accessibility and connectivity to diverse audiences. The New York Times notes the work is “psychologically driven… you might want to be in a mindful state.” The primary objective is to create an empathetic avenue for dialogue between performer\, witness\, and community. The organization’s body of work includes over 20 dance works\, ranging from solos to ensembles\, from shorter\, site-adaptive projects to evening-length site-specific performances.

This will be a concert full of surprises for both the audience and performers. \nFeaturing:\nScott Foster – Guitar\nSheldon Brown – Saxophones \nFriday\, June 9th 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $15 – $30 / (Door) $35 general \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nComposer and woodwind instrumentalist Sheldon Brown has been active on the San Francisco Bay Area creative music scene and beyond for over 30 years. In addition to performing his original music with Sheldon Brown Group\, Brown has performed with a diverse array of people and groups including Anthony Braxton\, Ben Goldberg\, Omar Sosa\, Club Foot Orchestra\, Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra\, Clarinet Thing and Bobby Weir. His extended original composition Blood of the Air (funded by Chamber Music America and Inter Music) premiered at the 32nd Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival\, and was featured at the 16th Annual Outsound Festival. Most recently Brown performed and composed music for Club Foot Orchestra’s score for the classic silent film\, Pandora’s Box\, at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. \nScott Foster has been a fixture on San Francisco jazz scene for over two decades. He can be heard performing regularly with his own group and as a sideman with the Americano Social Club\, B3B4 and multitude of the bay area’s finest musicians at wide variety of venues. Scott Foster’s CD’s “Basement Sinfonietta”\, “Go Small” and “Night Blooming Jazzmen” are currently available. Additionally Scott is the Performing Arts Chair and Jazz Band Director at the Urban School of San Francisco. \nJAZZ IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: \nJazz in the Neighborhood works to improve the economics of jazz performance in the Bay Area by presenting affordable concerts\, paying musicians a guaranteed wage\, and supporting the work of established and aspiring jazz artists. \nArt • Equity • Access. \nART • Jazz is often called the one truly American art form. We honor that legacy while supporting exploration and new approaches to the genre. Jazz in the Neighborhood events provide a space for jazz musicians to be creative\, spontaneous\, and expressive in their interpretation of music. Our Emerging Artists program nurtures the upcoming generation of jazz musicians through mentoring and opportunities to learn on the bandstand. \nEQUITY • Jazz musicians have long been participants in the “gig” economy. Very few have the security of regular employment playing jazz\, especially with the decline of union representation. For many\, the economics of jazz performance has become a cut of ticket sales\, a tip jar\, maybe a free meal\, and often a day job. This kind of remuneration hardly seems fair given the knowledge\, skill\, and practice that’s required to become a jazz musician. So unlike many concert producers\, Jazz in the Neighborhood guarantees musicians a fair wage when they perform at our events. We encourage all venues to join us in paying a guaranteed fair wage to jazz musicians. \nACCESS • We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy live jazz in a comfortable\, acoustically appropriate setting at an affordable price. Many of our shows are free. When events have an admission charge\, we keep the price reasonable and never turn anyone away for lack of funds. Please take a look at our events blog and calendar page for upcoming concerts. \nhttps://jazzintheneighborhood.org/about/mission/\nhttps://sheldonbrownmusic.com/home
