Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope Documentary Screening + Talk
DESCRIPTION:We have all seen the impact of homelessness here in San Francisco. A lot of people are talking about the issue; but\, those San Franciscans who are directly impacted are often left out of the conversation. \nBeyond Homeless: Finding Hope is a documentary that gives voice to our community’s most vulnerable residents. Manny’s is proud to host a special screening of this film which we hope will in inspire and motivate you to take action to help those affected by homelessness. \nAfter the screening\, we will come together for a thought-provoking conversation about real actionable solutions that can make a real difference. By the end of the evening\, you will leave informed and ready to create real impact. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of the change we want to see in the world. \nBeyond Homeless: Finding Home is a project of the Independent Institute and a production of Emergent Order. Learn more at Beyond Homeless. \nABOUT THE FILM: \nSan Francisco is ground zero for a human tragedy sweeping cities across America. It’s a crisis that has vexed policy makers while it has left thousands of people stripped of their dignity. At the heart of this epidemic are human lives. These are unique individuals\, the majority of whom are suering with addiction and mental illness. Their story needs to be told. An intervention must be staged to save their lives\, save one of America’s most beautiful cities and provide a model of hope for people across the nation. \nOver the past decade\, the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco has risen dramatically by more than 50%\, even as spending by the city and county has skyrocketed by over 130%. These are the numbers of an epidemic that has not been effesctively confronted. \nIn stark contrast\, in San Antonio\, the community has coalesced around a new model of human-centered\, 360 degree care and intervention that has over the same period produced a dramatic\, 80% decrease in its unsheltered homeless population— and\, in the process\, built compassion and understanding feeding continued success. Can San Francisco adapt this model to achieve dramatically different results? \nNow\, the Independent Institute\, based in Oakland California\, together with the Salvation Army are leading a coalition to change the direction of homelessness in the Bay Area and oer the people suering through this crisis\, and those in the greater community\, a way out—and\, in the process\, provide a proof of concept and inspiration for cities across the country to embrace and emulate. \nThrough a mix of interviews with experts and policy makers along with first-hand accounts from people experiencing homelessness as well as those who have successfully escaped it\, this 30-minute documentary takes viewers on an in-depth journey into the homeless crisis and how we can better address it. Beyond Homeless brings a unique mix of academic insight\, human connection and reason for hope to audiences hungry for solutions to one of our country’s most entrenched problems. \nABOUT THE PRODUCER: \nMary Theroux is the producer of Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope. She is currently Chairman and CEO of the Independent Institute\, a non-partisan academic public policy research organization\, and Executive Director of its Beyond Homeless initiative. She is the former chair and currently serves on the boards of the San Francisco and Alameda County Salvation Army Boards.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Salads - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Salads will give you three knock-your-socks off delicious options to keep in your back pocket. Feel confident preparing the elements that will set your salads apart: homemade croutons\, poached eggs\, and herbed goat cheese – oh my. \nFirst we will learn to make a classic Caesar salad\, with or without anchovies\, and find out why that is such a key point. As an essential element to this salad we will make our own cold emulsion (non-foodnerds call it a mayonnaise!) and the amazing warm croutons that set this dish apart from the cellophane wrapped knock-offs lined up at the market. \nNext we move on to an updated French classic. Lyonnaise\, the whole meal salad\, as we learn to poach an egg perfectly every time. Shiitake mushrooms will be transformed into faux bacon\, so smokey and rich you will never know the difference. Finally we will glisten some bitter pale green frisée lettuce with a Sherry vinaigrette\, and arrange all the components together for a simple weeknight meal. \nFinally we will end our class with a rainbow of roasted beets\, which are a technique in and of themselves. Add some arugula for bite and color\, and a creamy goat cheese in several incarnations. Out come our knives for more technique work to finish our composed salad\, as we cut away all the less desirable elements of an orange and are left with only “supremes” of perfect citrus. \nMENU \nCaesar Salad\, Garlic Mayonnaise Dressing\, Warm Croutons \nSalad Lyonnaise: Frisee Lettuce\, Poached Egg\, Shiitake Bacon \nTian of Beets\, Goats Cheese\, Arugula\, Citrus\, and Pistachio Salad \nIf you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Golden Thread Productions presents Amreeka: The Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:Golden Thread Productions Presents\nAmreeka: The Comedy Show \nCurated by Wafaa Bilal \nFriday\, May 12\, 2023\nat 8pm in Brava’s Main Stage \nWith headliner Eman El-Husseini\, featuring Usama Siddiquee\, Jackie Keliiaa and Emcee Charles McBee.\nAmreeka: The Comedy Show was born after the 2016 election\, bringing together diverse comedians with one thing in common: they love to complain. Then and since\, the toxic culture and politics in “Amreeka\,” as some Middle Easterners playfully pronounce it\, offer ample fodder for complaints. This cathartic and witty venting holds a mirror up to reality showing it has become so absurd and surreal\, one must laugh\, if not cry.\nFor Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal\, the show\, just like his solo works\, “is an artistic platform for creating dialogue and bringing people together on highly charged topics. Not politicizing laughter but laughing at politics as a form of solidarity and resistance.”\nTo learn more about Golden Thread Productions\, click here https://goldenthread.org/ \nTICKETS\n$20-$100\nGeneral admission tickets available at a sliding scale.

This year’s theme\, “Space\, Place\, and Ancestry\,” pays homage to the vastness of the term choreography within the South Asian diaspora\, and especially #ghadarinthemission. The Radical History Walking Tour of the Mission helps locate the featured performance by traversing audiences through the spaces we have and continue to occupy\, identifying the deep\, radical\, and sometimes painful histories of South Asians here in San Francisco. The tour is led by Barnali Ghosh and Anirvan Chatterjee who are renowned for their venture of a similar name in Berkeley. Following the tour\, Duniya Dance and Drum performs Ghadar Geet created by Artistic Director Joti Singh\, who undertakes the personal journey of tracing her great grandfather’s own radical South Asian history here in the Bay Area as part of the Ghadar party\, which opposed the British occupation of India. \nNote: We have a YOUTH/STUDENT/FINANCIAL HARDSHIP discount code: dancehistory \nSORRY\, WE ARE SOLD OUT OF WALKING TOUR TICKETS. \nAND TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE GHADAR GEET DANCE PERFORMANCE\, WHERE JOTI SINGH’S (WITH DUNIYA DANCE AND DRUM CO.) SUMMARY:Luna Rienne Gallery: The Thin Places by Chris Stokes (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Luna Rienne Gallery is pleased to present The Thin Places\, a solo exhibition featuring San Francisco artist Chris Stokes. \nThe Thin Places is a collection of works that examines the porous veil between two existences — heaven and earth\, light and dark\, this world and the other. Crossing the veil shifts the delicate equilibrium of light\, life\, and color\, which are pushed and pulled into each landscape. When the veil returns\, it releases these elements to be reclaimed by its previous existence. Stokes addresses this tenuous relationship and the resulting effects of the tension. \nIn addition to his solo exhibition\, Luna Rienne Gallery will be launching the crowdfunding campaign for their new parklet\, designed by Stokes. \nChris Stokes uses mixed media to interlace and layer unassuming combinations of color\, lines and found materials. Elements from literature\, cultural symbols\, and architecture meld together to become art that equals more than the sum of its parts. Born in Philadelphia\, the long-time San Francisco resident’s work is a reflection of his travels\, his ever-evolving perspective of the world\, and an interest in science fiction. The resulting pieces represent new landscapes and structures that seem barely possible. \nThe Thin Places will be on exhibit from May 13 through June 11\, 2023 at Luna Rienne Gallery\, 3318 22nd Street near Valencia in San Francisco\, which features visual artists working in contemporary mediums who integrate elements of urban culture with traditional techniques. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 13\, from 6PM until 9PM.

SUMMARY:Herbst Theatre: Theatre Flamenco of SF presents: Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo (Passage through a Timeless World)
DESCRIPTION:Tickets ($25-55): CityBoxOffice.com/TheatreFlamenco \nTheatre Flamenco of San Francisco\, the Bay Area’s oldest flamenco dance company (having been founded in 1966)\, brings audiences an explosive music and dance experience in its 57th home season production\, Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo (Passage through a Timeless World). \nIn the company’s joyous return after three years of the pandemic\, Artistic Director\, Carola Zertuche\, fuses flamenco with live electronic music\, violin\, and electric guitar. World-renowned Spanish guitarist\, Juani De La Isla\, will lead the musical journey. De La Isla is a highly respected flamenco guitarist from the island of San Fernando near the port city of Cádiz\, in Andalusia in southwestern Spain. Renowned Spanish musician Diego Amador\, Hijo will be bringing his vocal and piano stylings to the ensemble. Amador hails from a long line of Gypsy flamenco artists who have expanded their reach into rock\, jazz\, and other forms of world music\, launching the world-famous flamenco band Pata Negra.\nAdrian Santana\, a flamenco dancer from Malaga\, will join Zertuche on stage. This will be Santana’s debut with the company and his first time performing in San Francisco. Santana comes from a family of flamenco artists\, including his uncle\, Pepito Vargas\, a well-known dancer who passed down his knowledge to his nephew. Making his debut with the company is California-based electronic musician\, Pascual Martinez. Come travel the world through Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo!\nThis show is inspired by a trip Zertuche took to Jordan in 2021\, during a time of many Covid restrictions. She says “visiting the Wadi Rum Desert\, especially\, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life: peaceful energy surrounded me like an inexplicable force.I felt the sensation —with the light\, the endless red sand\, the stars clear in the night sky — that time had ceased to exist\, that everything was perfect\, that anything could happen. Flamenco\, to me\, also has that inexplicable energy\, and I’d like the audience to feel those same emotions\, even if just for the hour and 15 minutes of the show.”

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Old School Town Hall w/ SFO Director Ivar Satero
DESCRIPTION:Town hall meetings play a key role in our democracy. It’s a time where our elected officials can hear directly from the voters. \nManny’s started a monthly town hall with elected officials from all over the city to help facilitate discussion between the people and our representatives. Our next installment of our town hall series is with Director of the San Francisco International Airport Ivar Satero. \nThis will be a chance to ask your questions directly to the people who run our City and State. \nJust you and them – the way politics should me.
