SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:Big Picture Ranch and Area 23a present the San Francisco premiere screening of the film Common Ground a hopeful and uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement” who produce tremendous quantities of nutritionally dense food and are working to balance the climate – all while bringing our entire ecosystem back to life. The film explores how Americans from different walks of life\, different political backgrounds\, and different parts of the country share one thing in common –the very soil beneath their feet. The film investigates the power of “regenerative” farming systems –from large to small-scale farmers who are the champions of soil health as the key to unlocking more (and healthier) food to feed America and the world. \nCast includes: Laura Dern\, Rosario Dawson\, Jason Mamoa\, Woody Harrelson\, Ian Somerhalder\, and Donald Glover.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: This Is The Kit\, Rozi Plain
DESCRIPTION:$22 advance and $26 day of show \nWebsite | Spotify | bandcamp | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nThis one has teeth. Album number six from This Is The Kit is named after their song “Careful of Your Keepers\,” and while the keepers might have chompers of their own (they usually do)\, the first baring of squirrelly whites happens in the opening number\, the song that the album was almost named after\, “Goodbye Bite.” \nNow why the hell would we dwell on almosts? Because Kate Stables’ strength as a songwriter welcomes you into the world of mistakes and mishaps\, cruel circumstances and universe-driven surprises. It’s not about making lemonade out of lemons. Just pick up a lemon and chew. Save yourself the trouble of all that lemonade business. \n“A ‘how shit is this’ measuring stick?” sings Stables on “Goodbye Bite.” A practical problem\, defined succinctly\, yet a few moments later the melody carries the words “wish bone broke dancing death people left.” The ability to pulse swiftly from cryptic poetry to honest inquisition is a signature move of the Paris-based\, UK born bandleader\, in the same way that The Undertaker’s signature move was the ‘tombstone piledriver.’ And like being slammed headfirst into the mat\, there’s a sting to This Is The Kit’s lyrical confrontations. They’re forever sharp\, like canines\, perhaps the very same that do the chewing in song number two\, “Inside Outside.” \nOn this record the music is daring and soft\, cutting and warm\, a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. Stables is joined by her stalwart band of not-sick-of-eachother-yet Brits: Rozi Leyden\, Neil Smith & Jamie Whitby-Coles\, plus additional arrangements and extra-curricular instruments from Jesse Vernon. \nThere’s a shared language of their family experience that is as audible as ever in these recordings\, boasting beautiful instrumental performances that still leave the nuanced shape of space required for the human voice to live at the forefront of the songs. Having a shared language and a supportive environment is a pillar of survival\, and making anything new and striking in a modern age as disappointing as this one is as good a survival mechanism as any. \nSurviving change is a constant throughout this record. We are taken to the front lines in the song “More Change\,” where we can celebrate the losing battle of fighting change\, celebrating it with the barbed dancing lyrics that whisk us from the mundane to the massive: “light bulb life changing found a friend…claw sanity back again.” \nGuiding the ship through changing seas is producer Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals). Stables described Rhys’ role as being a “tonesetter\,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording. One noted sonic MVP is a distorted vibraphone. Hear the instrument in the title track with its upper harmonics crunched\, transients smashed\, a sound that is otherwise pure getting gnawed at until the grime matches the warning of the words to be careful of your keepers. \nRhys also acted as scribe\, dutifully maintaining a “conversation log” gathering tiny chunks of wisdom and novelty from the constant talking that goes hand in hand with losing ones’ minds in a recording studio. Tacking the madness onto the bulletin board sets the tone indeed\, almost to prove “if we’ve said all this\, who says we can’t make a brilliant record too.” \nThe brilliance comes back to the bite. “Stuck In A Room” plants the listener in the most familiar of recent quandaries\, wanting to leave but being unable to. There are so many versions of “leaving” one might be attracted to in this disappointing modern age\, and Stables works through them all. The mystery of just what the trouble is should be appreciated\, because then the pain can be shared. We aren’t just gawking at a songwriter having a specific bad day. We’re in the room too. But the song moves with a quickness\, Stables’ singing leading the beat to an uncertain march ahead\, implying that we will get out eventually\, albeit with some tooth-marks in the skin. Call it a souvenir. Call it a mistake to learn from. Just don’t call it late for dinner. \nBy the final song “Dibs\,” we’re nearly chewed through. I won’t spoil the ending\, but it’s got it all. There’s drama and excitement\, an urgency and a proper pleading. There’s comfort and repetition. And comfort and repetition. Repetition\, too. Doesn’t that just about sum up life on Earth? Conflict hits hard and with surprise\, but have the right people around you and you can escape by the skin of your teeth. No better people to do that with than This Is The Kit. Now finish your lemons\, they’re getting cold.

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Lobby Night: Richard Lang and Judith Selby
DESCRIPTION:Since 1999 Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang as a collaborative team have been visiting Kehoe Beach\, Point Reyes National Seashore in Northern California. They have rambled 1000 meters of tideline of this one beach hundreds of times to gather plastic debris washing out of the Pacific Ocean and from this one beach have collected over two tons of material. By carefully collecting and “curating” the bits of plastic\, they fashion it into works of art that matter-of-factly show\, with minimal artifice\, the material as it is. The viewer is often surprised that this colorful stuff is the thermoplastic junk of our throwaway culture. \nIn 2010 we visited “Van Gogh\, Gauguin\, Cezanne and Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces” from the Musee d’Orsay at the De Young Museum. \nThe nearly 100 crowd-pleasing paintings in the exhibit are the antecedents of what is one of the most popular (and recognizable) styles of art. With luxurious brushstrokes and gorgeous pastel colors\, it is hard to imagine why Impressionist paintings and Post- ever evoked disdain and outrage. Today we thrill at the fanciful bustle dresses from the late 1800s and marvel at the similarity of their sashay to the balloons we often find on the beach. \nAgainst the muted tones of the gallery walls\, we were especially awed by the brilliance of the posed and poised stately figures of women which sent us on a reverie of other flourishes and les grand dames of la Belle Epoch. \nIntrigued by the thought of our balloons on display as sashaying dancers\, we photographed this series. \nThese balloons found on Kehoe Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore are bright curiosities picked out from the washed ashore mess\, from the tangle of flotsam and jetsam. The little tattered balloons once signified transitions: joyous or grief struck. Many\, with ribbons still knotted on\, belies their notoriety for flimsy ephemerality. Their remains are hardly mute: they say\, “Yes\, that is gone\, and that is gone too.” For us\, finding all of them on one isolated beach\, they are strangely fraught with the delight of discovery. \nWhat moves us to action? Surely\, we need to know the bad news about plastic pollution of which these balloons are just a tiny bit\, but it’s life’s celebratory moments that build the ever-growing pool of energy needed to counter the environmental challenges at hand. It’s the dance in preparation. The balloons\, we so often find\, struck us one day as little dancers—flamenco\, ballroom\, yes! That’s it. “Yes\, I will…” says the Samba balloon\, “watch me.”

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Beyond Utopia
DESCRIPTION:A suspenseful\, riveting portrait of the lengths people will go to gain freedom\, BEYOND UTOPIA follows various individuals as they attempt to flee North Korea\, one of the most oppressive places on earth\, a land they grew up believing was a paradise. At the film’s core is a courageous pastor\, a man of God on a mission to help a mother reunite with the child she was forced to leave behind\, and a family of five – including small children and an elderly grandmother – embarking on a treacherous journey into the hostile mountains of China and through southeast Asia. Leaving their homeland is fraught with unimaginable danger – yet these individuals are driven to take the risk. Gripping\, thrilling\, and never more timely\, Madeleine Gavin’s award-winning film embeds the viewer with the subjects as they attempt their perilous escape\, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes. Buy now \nThe Story:\nIn 2020\, after crossing paths for 30 years in the Bay Area dance community\, Sarah and Keith performed together in the short powerful film The Space Between Us directed by Gabriel Diamond. Responding with words and dance to racially-charged questions of trust and safety\, the film documents an intimate moment of negotiating power\, race\, gender\, age\, queerness\, risk\, love\, and friendship. The film has been seen at over 15 festivals worldwide and has served in anti-racist DEI trainings and world building conferences. \nInspired by the film Keith and Sarah decided to gather two teams of dancers\, one Black and one white\, to explore potentials for racial healing through dancing and community process. The making of Tell has involved working separately in racially-caucused groups and then coming together as a multi-racial ensemble to build relationships through shared dancing\, rituals\, meals\, conversation\, and rural retreats. When we began we didn’t know if the two groups would remain separated or come together to create a single work\, with the decision in the hands of the Black dancers. We recognized the possibility of both failure and conflict. Holding space for the nuanced intricacies of our identities to understand racial harm and pursue racial healing\, Tell approaches cross-racial collaboration through honesty\, consent\, and care. \nTell is supported by grants from The San Francisco Arts Commission\, The California Arts Council\, The Kenneth Rainin Foundation\, New England Foundation for the Arts\, The Creative Work Fund\, The National Endowment for the Arts\, The MAP Fund\, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation\, Howard Gilman Foundation\, and Mellon Foundation

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Say She She\, They/Live
DESCRIPTION:$22 Advance and $25 Day of Show \nWebsite | Spotify | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nSay She She \nSay She She\, the soulful female-led trio\, stand rock solid on their discodelic duty with their boundary breaking sophomore album Silver. The three strong voices of Piya Malik (El Michels Affair staple feature\, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman)\, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown front the band. Following the NYC siren song\, the trio was pulled from their respective cities — Piya from London\, Nya from DC\, and Sabrina from NYC — to Manhattan’s downtown dance floors\, through the Lower East Side floorboards\, and up to the rooftops of Harlem\, where their friendship was formed on one momentous\, kismet eve. Silver was entirely written and recorded live to tape at Killion Sound studio in North Hollywood earlier this year and produced by Sergio Rios (of Orgone). \nWhile these analog recording techniques help root Say She She’s sound in a bedrock of tonal warmth that only tape can achieve\, it is also their process of cutting the track in the moment and capturing the magic of communal creativity that has seen their sound described as “a glorious overload of joyful elation and spiritual elevation” (MOJO) and “infused with the wonky post-disco spirit of early ’80s NYC” (The Guardian). Musical inspirations include Rotary Connection\, Asha Puthli\, Liquid Liquid\, Grace Jones and Tom Tom Club. \nUltimately\, Silver oozes with quirk and adventure and embraces the multifaceted nature of what it means to be a modern femme. Say She She fully embrace their role as beauticians\, actively reminding people of the inherent beauty in the world. They skillfully employ double entendres and humor to encourage open dialogue and fearlessly address important matters that demand attention. \nThey/Live \nNamed after the 1988 John Carpenter sci-fi film\, They/Live creates ethereal synth lines\, intricate drum patterns\, and haunting vocal harmonies to build complex\, dystopian scenes. But Whitney Mower believes nostalgia is dangerous. And while her powerful female voice nods to a previous area\, thematically\, she wants to face the complex challenges of today’s post-capitalist world—to find love and meaning\, to find authenticity and purity\, against all odds. “What if the world was splittinginto two\, on what idea would you survive?” she asks. \nRight before the pandemic\, Mower signed to Philadelphia record label Born Losers\, then released her debut album Ablation in May 2020. The album received enthusiastic accolades from publications and found many fans\, even though it could only be shared over the internet. \nSince the pandemic\, They/Live has finally entered the physical world\, bringing a three-piece band of multi-instrumentalists to the stage. \nHer second full-length\, Nature & Structure\, will arrive in 2024 via Born Losers Records.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Sustainable Gardening Series: Fall 2023
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Sustainable Gardening Series – Fall 2023 \nOctober 21st\, 28th\, and November 4th – Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. Cost: $30 for the full three-part series\, and receive a $10 gift card at each workshop. Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission \nThe Introduction to Sustainable Gardening series is a three-part workshop series designed to help you transform your yard into a thriving\, sustainable garden. This course will teach you everything you need to know to nurture perennial gardens that conserve water\, provide beauty\, and attract pollinators and beneficial insects. \nSan Francisco is a beautiful and unique city\, with year-round mild temperatures and dry\, foggy summers. Learn what plants are adapted to our coastal climate and grow without the need for toxic pesticides or large amounts of water. This course will focus on native and drought-tolerant ornamental gardens but will cover broad topics that can also apply to vegetable gardening. \nThe full series is $30\, but you will get $10 gift cards to the Urban Farmer Store at each workshop (for a total of $30 in gift cards if you attend the two workshops). \nRegistering will sign you up for the full series of three workshops. Please only register if you plan to attend all three sessions. \nSERIES SUMMARY: \nPart I: Sustainable Garden Design This workshop will teach you how to design a beautiful\, functional\, and thriving home garden space. San Francisco urban gardens come with all sorts of unique challenges (fog\, wind\, steep hillsides\, sandy soil) and it can be difficult to know where to start. Instructor Ellyn will provide information to help you evaluate and design garden spaces and choose plants to match the space\, a principle called “Right Plant\, Right Place”. \nPart II: Water-Wise Gardening This workshop will take a more detailed look at the many beautiful plants that grow well in San Francisco and how you can care for them without using lots of water. Even with San Francisco’s dry and foggy summers\, there is an amazing palate of climate-appropriate plants that will thrive here with little or no summer water so that you can conserve water and save on your bill. Instructor Ellyn will teach you about all of this and also about how to water your plants properly and group them by similar water needs to help them reach their full potential. \nPart III: Organic Pest Control Learn how a healthy and biodiverse garden can thrive without the use of pesticides. Ellyn will discuss the notion that most plant health problems are caused by poor growing conditions or improper planting\, and that pests and diseases may be secondary problems. Plant health care involves a combination of strategies including monitoring\, and you’ll learn strategies to attract beneficial insects\, and keep pests\, diseases\, and weeds at bay naturally. \nInstructor Ellyn Shea is a Bay Area gardener\, garden coach\, Certified Arborist\, consultant\, and educator. She is a longtime Garden for the Environment teacher and supporter and shares her extensive gardening knowledge in this workshop series. \nCOVID-19 information: \n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

After being abducted into the woods\, she was sexually assaulted by three men. Ranjit goes to the police\, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived\, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. \nA cinematic documentary\, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child. In India\, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent\, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of. With tremendous access\, we witness the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come. \n“Wrenching\, powerful\, timely\, and insightful… one of the best investigations into the nature of toxic masculinity and rape culture in modern Indian society. Sharp editing and highly intuitive and detailed cinematography help to make TO KILL A TIGER into one of those documentaries that approaches the emotional heights of grand\, unforced human drama.” – Andrew Parker\, The Gate
