SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Date Night\, Done Right: San Francisco - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nGot a date night coming up? How about another important occasion: birthday\, anniversary? The 53rd day with the same roomates? Whatever the event\, come to 18 Reasons and celebrate the occaision and our city’s unparalleled culinary heritage. We will start with the best crab in the world\, our precious Dungeness\, starring in the classic starter salad. Then out to the Sunset for the Asian-fusion All-Star garlic noodles\, paired with a pan-seared steak. But wait\, there is more San Francisco to fit on the plate: our very own vibrant Green Goddess dressing\, punchy with herbs and garlic\, poured as a steak sauce on the side. Finally out too the Buena Vista for the dessert inspiration: an Irish coffee inspired pudding in a glass\, topped with Irish whiskey whipped cream. \nMENU \nCrab Louie Salad \nGarlic Noodles\, Pan Seared Steak with Green Goddess Sauce \nIrish Coffee “Pudding”: Chocolate Coffee Mousse\, Irish Whiskey Whipped Cream \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: soy\, egg\, dairy\, fish\, wheat\, shellfish. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

Through laughter and tears\, he compares and contrasts trials of single parenting in the 1970s and the dawn of the 21st century as he tries to answer the question…What does it truly mean to be a father?\nAbout the Performer & Creative Team \nBrian Copeland (performer/writer) has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. \nIn 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. \nIt’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. The play is currently in development with Rob Reiner’s Castlerock Entertainment for television. \nCopeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, THE SCION\, and THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW with Charlie Varon. \nHe has also appeared in the films THE BUCKET LIST and the Marvel’s VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. \nDavid Ford (director) has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, the dean of solo performance\, and the solo performers’ best friend; a week rarely goes by when residents of the Bay Area can not enjoy one of his productions. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\, Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud Second Time Around (the latest in Charlie and David’s twenty-five year partnership)\, Geoff Hoyle’s Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\, all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows including the longest running solo show in the Bay Area\, Not A Genuine Black Man. Other work of note includes\, with storyteller-holy-man Ron Jones and Michael Rice\, a mentally disabled performer\, Say Ray. He also worked with Bill Talen on the original creation of Reverend Billy\, the Obie award-winning theater/political action piece. \nDavid’s work has been seen regionally at the Public Theatre\, Second Stage\, St. Clement’s\, Dixon Place\, One Dream Theatre and Theatre for the New City (NY)\, Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington DC).

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: San Francisco\, Mi Amor!
DESCRIPTION:Brava presents\nSan Francisco\, Mi Amor!\nThe 80’s: Queer Comedy\, Taquerias\, The Castro\, The Mission\, Mullets & Shoulder Pads So Wide You Can Fly!\nWritten & Performed by Monica Palacios\nApril 28 – 29\, 2023 in Brava’s Cabaret\nFriday and Saturday at 7:30pm \nRenowned Chicana lesbian writer/performer Monica Palacios presents her solo show: San Francisco\, Mi Amor!\, about the start of her queer comedy career and activism in San Francisco during the 1980s. A challenging decade to be an out Chicana lesbian comic as AIDS is front page news\, causing mass hysteria and shining a negative light on the LGBTQ community. Monica takes this bleak time in history and shares her triumphant story about being one of the first Chicana lesbian comics performing at the Valencia Rose Cabaret\, the first gay comedy club in the nation. She’s also a Film Student at San Francisco State University trying to figure out how to take social justice courses from Angela Davis. Monica is happily living with her lesbian sister\, Eleanor—double dyke familia! Palacios is enchanted by and lusts after the women making her burritos at Taqueria La Cumbre. Her day job is waitressing at a funky Mexican restaurant at the tourist trap Pier 39 and she reminisces about birthing the comedy troupe Culture Clash. Monica meets and auditions for actor Edward James Olmos on 24th Street during a Dia de Los Muertos festival and also shares stories of grooming her lesbian mullet and mucho mucho mas! Throughout the play\, projected images will be shown from this time period: funky first hand-made flyers\, headshots\, business cards\, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. \nSan Francisco’s Latino Mission District was a hot spot for this blossoming lesbian comedian performing at what are now historical queer and queer friendly venues such as the Valencia Rose Cabaret\, ground zero for the Queer Comedy Movement; Artemis Cafe\, a lesbian restaurant and space; Amelia’s\, a lesbian bar and the Galeria de La Raza\, an art gallery. Monica and a handful of LGBTQ comics were bravely performing despite the homophobic atmosphere. Palacios stood out amongst her peers with her unique brand of Chicana lesbian humor focusing on nationality and sexuality in one breath. \nSan Francisco\, Mi Amor!\, is a comedic look back at a pioneering career during a remarkable time in LGBTQ and Chicana history. \nABOUT THE COMEDIAN\nMonica Palacios is a Chicana lesbian playwright and solo performer living in Los Angeles\, creating work promoting the LGBTQ Latinx experience. Palacios is one of the first Chicana lesbian comics to be out and proud on stage during the 80s in San Francisco when the AIDS crisis was raging and homophobia was rampant. Because of her triumphant history\, national and international scholars have critically engaged her work in academic journals\, books\, dissertations and conference panels. SUMMARY:ATA: Other Cinema: BAD PUPPETS
DESCRIPTION:CHILD’s ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES + KAVANAGH’s WE’VE BEEN WARNED \nThis first of two Puppet Shows—this one foregrounding the Scary—sees the SF premiere of Abigail Child‘s Origin of the Species\, her masterful hour-plus exploration of both new tech/engineering developments and of radically new understandings of the relations between humans and machines…that are apparently our equals\, and soon to be our superiors. Abby‘s cinematic genius is realized in exquisite doc coverage—especially of the new Japanese initiatives. Opening the evening is a much-needed push-back from OC ally Mike Kavanagh\, A Short History of Robots and AI in Cinema\, that presses the case for regulatory action to keep the genie back in the bottle. This 40-minute chronology includes scores of riveting clips\, from Metropolis to Colossus: The Forbin Project\, and beyond\, teasing out the critical distinctions between “generative” and “sentient”. Enhancing the two anchors are Keith Sanborn on Jeremy Bentham\, Peter Freund on HAL 9000\, Mark Shephard‘s Sentient City\, and David Cox‘ “real-world” noggin’-choppin’ heli-drone! $13

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power
DESCRIPTION:What is power? Who wields it? How can it be owned\, contested\, and exercised? For Asian women whose embodiment of power has culturally been limited to either Dragon Lady\, Lotus Blossom or Tiger Mom\, these questions are ever more prevalent. The true definition of power remains elusive and open to inquiry. \nCurated by Yeu Q Nguyen\, Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander woman agency and resilience in a multitude of manifestations. Jade is a rare mineral imbued with different metaphysical and cultural meanings\, used since prehistoric times to adorn objects associated with power such as ceremonial daggers\, jewelry\, and crowns. Using jade as an allusion to more diverse definitions of power\, the exhibition pays homage to overlooked figures in our history and establishes new legacies of leadership for a more equitable future for AAPI women everywhere. \nPresented by Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) as part of their 26th annual United States of Asian America Festival: REIMAGINING HORIZONS \nCurator\nYeu Q Nguyen \nExhibiting Artists\nAnh Lee\nAJ Schnettler\nChoppy Oshiro\nIna Kaur\nIS/LAND Asian American Performance Collaborative\nJoanna L.
