DESCRIPTION:This program presents recent video works by Dicky Bahto and Mona Varichon that variously utilize diary film making\, found imagery/sounds\, and collaborations with their parents. \nMark Toscano of Los Angeles Filmforum says of Bahto’s films: “His varied and complex engagement with moving image and photographic media is steeped in a deeply felt humanity and empathy\, manifesting through his inspired photographic eye and frequently direct interaction with and appreciation of the material vitality of film and cinema. His films achieve heightened emotional states of great intimacy and poetry\, often channeling the uniquely aleatory qualities of film to carry a sensuality and spirituality hovering in the space between loving depiction and vaporous abstraction.” \nMarion Vasseur Raluy says of Varichon’s: “Her works – whose approach can be compared to that of fan art – are certainly tributes to various personalities that she admires\, from her mother to Assa Traoré. In this alternation between popular public figures and anonymous individuals\, she tries to understand their motivations and desires by revealing their mechanisms of struggle as well as their political opinions. From English to French\, from the private to the public sphere\, or even social networks\, M. Varichon produces video collages that make it possible to ‘make people speak’ and ‘make them hear’ differently. In this way she is reviving a heritage that has partly disappeared: that of beginning with the voices of others rather than her own.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we transport you to Northern Kenya to learn about the remarkable achievements of the Sarara Foundation across healthcare\, education and enterprise including the heartwarming story of the first indigenous community owned Elephant Sanctuary in Africa\, Reteti. \nSarara Foundation’s Program Director Terri Nderitu\, and Chief Administration Officer Andrew Smiles will share how the foundation’s partnership with the indigenous Samburu of Namunyak Community Conservancy\, that spans 850\,000 acres\, has been successful in preserving biodiversity and building thriving communities – creating a community-centric model of conservation that can serve as a prototype for modern conservation in Africa. \nABOUT THE SARARA FOUNDATION: \nThe Sarara Foundation is working to protect the 850\,000-acre Matthews Forest Range\, located within Namunyak Community Conservancy in Northern Kenya\, the wildlife and the indigenous Samburu who call this land their home. Working in partnership with the Samburu community to preserve their cultural independence\, build economic strength and foster a healthy foundation for the future\, our unique approach to conservation places a thriving indigenous community at the center of the ecosystem. Sarara’s programs cover three thematic areas including\, enterprise development\, a groundbreaking nomadic montessori education program\, and mobile medical unit focused on perinatal healthcare. \nThe Samburu have lived side-by-side with a healthy\, robust environment for generations and in order to navigate a rapidly modernizing world and changing climate we look to their traditional wisdom to ensure the historic wildlife and wild lands of the Matthews Forest Range continue to be preserved. In addition to community led conservation\, the Sarara Foundation is also the primary fiscal sponsor of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Dedicated to rescuing\, rehabilitating and preparing orphaned baby elephants for eventual rewilding\, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first community owned and operated wildlife sanctuary in Africa. Currently over 42 elephant orphans reside at Reteti being looked after by community members who will eventually assist in their rewilding.

DESCRIPTION:Activating Sadie Barnette’s The New Eagle Creek Saloon\, The New Eagle Creek Disco Tech moves through many historical dance references\, paying homage to African Diasporic masquerades\, or “dance under cloth” worldwide\, and television shows like Soul Train of the early 1970s and late-night public access shows of the 1990s featuring Black electronic dance culture. \nThe program will open with an interactive performance by The Global Street Dance Masquerade\, honoring the ancestral nature of club fashion and Black dance histories. Then\, host and “dancer of ceremonies” rashadxsoulnubian will lead guests through a multimedia tribute to the electronic dance shows of the 1970s and 1980s and reminisce on the early-1990s era of the original New Eagle Creek Saloon\, San Francisco’s first Black-owned gay bar\, opened by Rodney Barnette in 1990. Guests can expect curated music trivia\, soulful karaoke\, and special appearances by various performers. The New Eagle Creek Disco Tech experience will culminate at the bar\, honoring the neon pink history Sadie Barnette has invoked for her father\, Rodney Barnette. \nDrinks will be available for purchase at the bar. He is the proud recipent of the LoveLife Foundation’s “Oakland’s Finest” award in 2023 for his work with The Black Lives Masquerade. Rashad’s performance works\, collaborations\, dance\, and multimedia have been presented at SFMOMA\, The Strand & ACT Theater San Francisco\, The Berkeley Art Museum\, the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)\, Yerba Buena Center for The Arts (YBCA)\, SOMArts Cultural Center\, Dance Mission Theater\, Luggage Store Gallery\, Tenderloin National Forest\, San Francisco Public Library\, and Portland Art Musuem. This is the third collaborative experience with The New Eagle Creek Saloon and Sadie Barnette\, presenting at The Lab San Francisco in 2019 and the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles in 2019.

Masks are recommended. \nJoin 18 Reasons Chef and Culinary Instructor\, Mike Weller\, for a class in the basics of using your chef’s knife at home. We will discuss the ins and outs of knife use\, care and safety. You will walk away knowing how to maintain a sharp edge and the best way to cut vegetables and herbs. This is a great class for beginners. \nThis class includes our Knife Skills manual for reference when cooking at home. The vegetables cut in this class will be used by each student to create their own individual salad\, with a shared buffet of vinaigrette\, fried shallots\, minced chili\, roasted peanuts\, and optional roast chicken meat to garnish. Wine\, beer and bread will also be served. \nIf you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds.  He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs.  When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. It’s a crisis that has vexed policy makers while it has left thousands of people stripped of their dignity. At the heart of this epidemic are human lives. These are unique individuals\, the majority of whom are suering with addiction and mental illness. Their story needs to be told. An intervention must be staged to save their lives\, save one of America’s most beautiful cities and provide a model of hope for people across the nation. \nOver the past decade\, the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco has risen dramatically by more than 50%\, even as spending by the city and county has skyrocketed by over 130%. These are the numbers of an epidemic that has not been effesctively confronted. \nIn stark contrast\, in San Antonio\, the community has coalesced around a new model of human-centered\, 360 degree care and intervention that has over the same period produced a dramatic\, 80% decrease in its unsheltered homeless population— and\, in the process\, built compassion and understanding feeding continued success. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs.  When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. In the Bay Area\, she has appeared with the Stockton Symphony\, Symphony Silicon Valley\, Lamplighters Music Theater\, Festival Opera\, Pocket Opera\, and many others. She often performs with the avant-garde ensemble sfSound\, and has been a guest artist with Earplay\, the Eco Ensemble\, Santa Cruz New Music Works\, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. She earned degrees in flute performance from San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nPeople who are interested in this workshop can dive deeper by exploring private lessons and group classes and ensembles at CMC.

DESCRIPTION:Egyptian music of the Golden Age with Basma Edrees\, Reda Darwish and Sirvan Manhoobi \nThis concert will feature Egyptian violinist Basma Edrees\, Iranian Oudist Sirvan Manhoobi and Egyptian percussionist Reda Darwish in a concert centered around Egyptian music of the 20th century (considered Egypt’s Golden age of music in the modern era). \nFeaturing:\nBasma Edrees – Violin\nSirvan Manhoobi – Oud\nReda Darwish – Doumbek & Bongos \nFriday\, May 12th\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 / (Door) $35 general \nMasks are required inside at all time. Proof of vaccination is required.  \nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \nBasma Edrees is an Egyptian violinist\, performer\, and educator. Passionate about introducing the world to the rich music of her upbringing\, Edrees has given Arabic music workshops at UC Berkeley\, Stanford and Labyrinth Online. She has taught Arabic music and European counterpoint at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is currently on the violin faculty of Santa Clara University. Basma Edrees earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in violin performance from Mannes School of Music and The Juilliard Schools in New York. She enjoys a rich career as a western classical violinist\, Argentine Tango violinist and Arabic violin player. \nSirvan Manhoobi started his musical journey at age 13 studying tar/sehtar with Keivan Saket and Behrooz Hemati. He chose oud as his primary instrument and attended classes with Arsalan Kamkar. He studied with Mohammad Reza Lotfi (Radif Navazi-Iranian classical music repertoire)\, Mehran Rohani (principles and history of music)\, Siamak Jahangiri (improvisation and analysis of Radif Navazi). He received Best Soloist awards at Iranian music festivals and formed the Bamdad Music Ensemble\, focusing on Kurdish and Iranian classical music. He has a master’s of archaeology from Tehran University and currently lives in Oakland\, performing\, composing\, and teaching Iranian and Kurdish music. \nReda Darwish\, a native of Cairo\, has been playing various percussion instruments since childhood. At eight years old\, he was featured weekly on Egyptian television. Soon after he was playing for Egypt’s most famous dancers and singers including Fayza Ahmed\, Nagat Al Saghira\, and Samira Said. He later toured with Hani Mahanna’s orchestra\, including to the United States where Darwish has now made his new home. He has also recorded his own compositions and was commissioned to compose the soundtrack for Reader’s Digest’s Wonders Sacred and Mysterious series covering Egypt and Turkey.
