A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment. Millions of refugees from Ukraine have crossed borders into neighboring countries\, and many more have been forced to move inside the country.\n“The situation is disconcerting\, this is what several Ukrainian women I talk to are telling me. They agree in shrinking the importance of material belongings\, including the roof under which they raised the children who accompany them\, and which\, as they can learn from the news\, has now turned into ruins. The real heartbreaker has been to leave their husbands fighting with rudimentary resources against a Goliath armed outright. The two typical words in any farewell “see you soon” have been replaced by “love you forever”. The chances of surviving are swinging at the rhythm of the bombs and the decisions taken by political leaders coerced by economic interests.”\nThis series of photographs were taken at the Polish border of Medyka and the town of Przemyšl during the month of March 2022. Inspired by the music from the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s\, Jang has collaborated with Max Roach in their work SenseUs (1990). “Eleanor Bumpurs” (1993) and “Can’t Stop Cryin’ for America: Black Lives Matter!” (2017) represent Jang’s works in response to the legal lynching of Black Americans. Jang’s Reparations Now! Concerto for Large Ensemble and Taiko (1987) pays tribute to the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations and shouts out a clarion call for reparations for Black Americans. \nJang also explores Chinese American transnational history in works such as The Chinese American Symphony (2007)\, a work that pays tribute to the Chinese immigrant laborers who built the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. Ford\, director of the cult film classic Vegas in Space (1991)\, served most of the 1980s as “honorary straight man” in the legendary San Francisco drag troupe Sluts A-Go-Go. Collaborating with his mentor and friend\, the legendary drag queen Doris Fish\, along with Miss X and “Tippi”\, he created and co-starred in some celebrated drag theater\, both on nightclub and legitimate stages\, which are still lovingly remembered today by those who were there. \nDoris Fish hailed from Sydney but relocated mostly full time to San Francisco in the late 70s. Ford was a young filmmaker of 21 when he met Fish\, who soon recruited him to direct her feature film obsession Vegas in Space. Little did they know the next decade of their lives would be given over to the toils and triumphs that awaited. Driving under the influence of glamour\, film theory and an addictive love of vivid colors and bad acting\, they devoted all of their time\, money and youth to the completion of Doris and Phillip’s cinematic fantasy. Vegas in Space famously took nine years to complete and created a sensation at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival\, appeared at festivals worldwide\, and was broadcast on USA Network’s Up All Night. The film today is a greater cult phenomenon than when it was released\, having inspired generations of young queens the world over to dedicate themselves to follow their own artistic dreams. \nIn High Spots in a Low Dive – Doris Fish Home Movies 1981 to 1991\, Ford presents a selection of greatest hits from his extensive “home movie” collection of videos from stage and TV performances together with many glimpses behind-the-scenes. Live onstage he shares his stories and reminiscences\, along with a fabulous assortment of video hits from San Francisco in the 1980s\, a rather forgotten period of drag theater history.
