SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Tharlo
DESCRIPTION:High in the desolate\, windswept mountains of Tibet lives a shepherd named Tharlo. He tends his sheep and rides his motorcycle\, passing his days in familiar and traditional routines far from the city lights. But when Tharlo travels to the city for an ID card photo and meets Yangtso\, a modern young hairdresser\, his monastic life will forever change. \nWriter and director Pema Tseden (1969-2023) is widely recognized as the leading filmmaker of a newly emerging Tibetan cinema and the first director in China to film his movies entirely in the Tibetan language. Tseden has published more than 50 short stories and novels both in Tibetan and Chinese; his work has won numerous wards including the Drang-char (sbrang-char) Tibetan Literature Prize and has been translated into languages English\, French\, and German. \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon (BACCS)\, our tribute to the recently deceased Tibetan New Wave pioneer Pema Tseden shows off the thoughtful nuance of his range by pairing the stylish existential road movie Jinpa with the atmospheric neorealist dramedy Tharlo. \nGeneral admission is $14. Both shows are free or discounted for Roxie members. Get a Pema Tseden Tribute pass and see both films for only $22! If you purchase a double feature pass\, this will be available for pick up at the box office on August 13.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Jinpa
DESCRIPTION:On the path of life\, sometimes we meet someone whose dreams overtake our own to the point that they converge. This is a story of revenge and redemption. On an isolated road passing through the vast barren plains of Tibet\, a truck driver who has accidentally run over a sheep chances upon a young man who is hitching a ride. As they drive and chat\, the truck driver notices that his new friend has a silver dagger strapped to his leg; he comes to understand that this man is out to kill someone who wronged him earlier in life. As he drops the hitchhiker off at a fork in the road\, little does the truck driver realize that their short time together has changed everything\, and that their destinies are inexorably intertwined. \nDirected by Pema Tseden. Produced by Jacky Pang and Wong Kar-Wai. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Midnight Cowboy
DESCRIPTION:NEW RESTORATION! \nOne of the British New Wave’s most versatile directors\, John Schlesinger came to New York in the late 1960s to make Midnight Cowboy\, a picaresque story of friendship that captured a city in crisis and sparked a new era of Hollywood movies. Jon Voight delivers a career-making performance as Joe Buck\, a wide-eyed hustler from Texas hoping to score big with wealthy city women; he finds a companion in Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo\, an ailing swindler with a bum leg and a quixotic fantasy of escaping to Florida\, played by Dustin Hoffman in a radical departure from his breakthrough in The Graduate. A critical and commercial success despite controversy over what the MPAA termed its “homosexual frame of reference\,” Midnight Cowboy became the first X-rated film to receive the best picture Oscar\, and decades on\, its influence still reverberates through cinema. (Criterion) \nScreenplay by Waldo Salt. Based off the novel by James Leo Herlihy. Starring Dustin Hoffman\, Jon Voight. Also featuring Sylvia Miles\, John McGiver\, Brenda Vaccaro\, Bob Balaban\, Jennifer Salt\, and Barnard Hughes. \nGet a 2-film pass and see Midnight Cowboy AND the new documentary film Desperate Souls\, Dark City and The Legend of Midnight Cowboy for a bargain price even Ratso would appreciate: $21! \nPasses are sold out online but a limited amount will be available at the box office starting July 28. \nIf you purchased a Midnight Cowpoke pass\, this will be available for pick up at the box office\, starting the first day of the run on July 28. You will only be able to redeem your tickets at the box office when presenting the pass

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Kokomo City
DESCRIPTION:In the wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary Kokomo City\, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City – Daniella Carter\, Koko Da Doll\, Liyah Mitchell\, and Dominique Silver – who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back\, the film vibrates with energy\, sex\, challenge\, and hard-earned wisdom. \nThis vital portrait\, edited and shot by Smith in bold black and white\, is her feature directorial debut. A two-time Grammy-nominated producer\, singer\, and songwriter\, Smith made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show. Executive produced by Lena Waithe\, Kokomo City won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award\, as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Staff Pick: Best in Show
DESCRIPTION:Yancy’s pick! \n“It’s a commonplace that pets resemble their owners (or vice versa)\, but the phenomenon has rarely been explored with such dogged glee. A ‘mockumentary’ tracking half-a-dozen contestants as they prepare for the annual Mayflower Dog Show in Philadelphia\, Christopher Guest’s film combines flea-on-the-wall observation with direct-to-camera interviews… Co-written by Guest and Eugene Levy\, but apparently largely improvised\, this caricatures a broad cross-section of social archetypes\, from the gay couple (McKean and Higgins) with their shih-tzu\, to the neurotic yuppies (Posey and Hitchcock) with their Weimaraner\, and Guest’s backwoods cajun\, with his bloodhound Hubert. The performances are perfect\, and the actors aren’t bad either… The dog show itself is enlivened by an outrageous comic turn from Fred Willard as an addled TV commentator suffering from a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. Levy is fun\, too\, as a cuckolded salesman with two left feet (literally).” – Time Out (London)

SUMMARY:Manny’s: SFC Live: The State of Bay Area Movie Theaters + ‘Ask Mick LaSalle’ LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Great films deserve great theaters. But Bay Area indie cinemas have been facing a challenging era\, from pandemic shutdowns and COVID restrictions to cautious audiences and Hollywood strikes. \nHow are local theater owners changing the movie-going experience to attract audiences back into auditoriums? Are they optimistic about the outlook for this year and beyond? And what will it take to ensure Bay Area movie houses thrive? \nJoin The Chronicle’s Datebook team for a discussion about local theaters and the movies at 6 p.m. Aug. 16\, at Manny’s cafe in San Francisco. Chronicle movie writer G. Allen Johnson will sit down with Roxie Theater executive director Lex Sloan\, CinemaSF co-owner Adam Bergeron and Grand Lake Theatre owner Allen Michaan for a conversation about the future of indie theaters in the Bay Area. \nPlus\, longtime Chronicle movie critic Mick LaSalle celebrates 20 years of answering readers’ burning movie questions with a live edition of his “Ask Mick LaSalle” column alongside Senior Arts and Entertainment Editor Mariecar Mendoza. \nGet your tickets today! \nIf you have questions you’d like Mick to answer\, send them in advance to mlasalle@sfchronicle.com with the subject line: “Manny’s live.” \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nYou’ll hear from: \nLex Sloan: is the executive director at The Roxie Theater in San Francisco and one of the founding members of the Bay Area Media Maker Summit. Lex graduated with an MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University and a BA in Social Change Media from Western Washington University. Sloan is a devoted member of the LGBTQ+ filmmaking community and is committed to ensuring that queer history is preserved and shared through the power of cinema. \nMick LaSalle: Mick LaSalle has been the film critic for The San Francisco Chronicle since 1987. Between 1994 and 1999\, he was the on-air film critic for the ABC-TV affiliate in San Francisco\, KGO. He is the author of Complicated Women: Sex and Power in Pre-Code Hollywood (2000)\, a history/critical study of the actresses who worked during the pre-censorship “pre-Code” era of 1929-1934. Liz Smith called it “a brilliant work” and film historian Scott Eyman called it “a breakthrough work of film scholarship.” That book was followed by Dangerous Men: Pre-Code Hollywood and the Birth of the Modern Man (2002); The Beauty of the Real: What Hollywood Can Learn from Contemporary French Actresses (2012); and Dream State: California in the Movies (2021). He wrote and co-produced the Complicated Women documentary for Turner Classic Movies\, which was narrated by Jane Fonda. He has written introductions to several books\, including The Enduring Star\, Peter Cowie’s biography of Joan Crawford (Rizzoli\, 2009). He was a panelist at the Berlin Film Film Festival in 2009 and has been a regular panelist at the Venice Film Festival since 2006. \nMariecar Mendoza: Mariecar Mendoza is the senior arts and entertainment editor for the San Francisco Chronicle\, overseeing Datebook. Prior to The Chronicle\, Mariecar worked at publications in Southern California\, covering major pop culture moments in the region like Coachella and Comic-Con to the Emmys and Oscars. A Bay Area native\, Mariecar is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association and most recently served as the local chapter’s vice president. \nG. Allen Johnson: G. Allen Johnson has written about film for the Hearst Corporation since 1996\, first for the San Francisco Examiner (1996-2000)\, then The San Francisco Chronicle (2000-present). He previously worked for the Pasadena Star-News and the Indianapolis Star. He was selected as an SF Essential by the San Francisco Film Society in April 2023 for his longtime coverage of the Bay Area film scene. \nAdam Bergeron is the co-owner\, with wife Jamie Holker\, of CinemaSF\, which operates the Balboa\, Vogue and 4-Star theaters in San Francisco and has acquired and is preparing to re-open the Park Theater in Lafayette. Bergeron and Holker also own and operate the Laundromat\, a recently opened restaurant in the Richmond District. \nAllen Michaan is the owner and operator of the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland\, a movie palace built in 1926. He has operated the theater since 1979 and purchased the property in 2018. Michaan has been involved with the cinema business since moving to Berkeley from the East Coast in 1970. Since that time he has operated some two dozen Bay Area theaters. Michaan also owns two other companies: The Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire\, which produces a large outdoor antiques show each month on the old jet runways of Alameda Point; and Michaan’s Auctions\, which holds monthly sales of art and antiques. \nChronicle Live at Manny’s is a monthly series of conversations featuring Chronicle journalists discussing the most pressing issues in the Bay Area and having a little fun along the way. \nPhoto: Carlos Avila Gonzalez / The Chronicle

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Scientist\, Titan Ups\, MC King Kanashi I\, Mad Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:$25 advance and $30 day of show \nSpotify | Soundcloud | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nThe Scientist \nHopeton Brown better known as The Scientist and sometimes known as Overton Brown\, from Kingston\, Jamaica was a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock)\, one of the originators of dub music. The Scientist burst onto the reggae scene in the early ’70s with a reckless mixing style that seemed to outdo even King Tubby’s wildest extravaganzas. He began his career as an engineer at Tubby’s in the mid ’70s. Shortly afterwards\, he gained a reputation with a distinctive mixing style. \nHe left King Tubby’s studio at the end of the ’70s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio\, giving him the chance to work on a 16-track mixing desk rather than the four tracks at Tubby’s. He came to prominence in the early 1980s and produced many albums\, his mixes featuring on many releases in the first part of the decade. He mixed several albums featuring the Roots Radics\, many based on tracks by Barrington Levy. He also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. In 1982 he left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio. \nHe made a series of albums in the early 1980s\, with titles themed around Scientist’s fictional achievements in fighting Space Invaders\, Pac-Men\, and Vampires\, and winning the World Cup. The music on these albums was played by Roots Radics\, his most frequent collaborators. \nFive of his songs from the album The Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires were used as the playlist songs on the K-Jah radio station in the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto 3. \n“In the ’70s\, I started building sound system audio amplifiers. I would then test the amplifier with test instruments to determine how the amplifier was performing. Everything would look normal\, but when I played reggae music through the amplifier\, it would over heat and the plates of the KT88 would run red\, especially when I played a mix from the great King Tubby’s that had subsonic drum and bass frequencies as well as razor sharp high frequencies I would have to re -bias the KT88 and make other changes in order to accommodate reggae’s wide frequency response and high slew rate needs. I noticed when I played other types of music the amplifier would respond normal. I found that to be strange so I used King Tubby’s mixes as a platform to ensure that the amplifiers would not break down under extreme conditions. \nI was fascinated by his exclusive style of mixing and unique sound effects. It was the “Roots of Dub” dub album produced by Bunny Lee that became my favourite test album and also inspired me to want to meet him. One day\, I was repairing a television for a friend who had worked for King Tubby’s\, we needed a transformer and King Tubby’s was the only place who had those particular types of transformers I was so excited to meet this brilliant man and considered myself very lucky to have had this opportunity. After that\, it became a regular place for me to buy special made power and output transformers for the amplifiers that I was building. King Tubby’s became impressed with my electronic skills and abilities at such a young age. I told him I wanted to build a mixing console\, at first\, it sounded like a joke to him we joked about making mixing consoles with moving faders and automation. Years later it became a reality in Neve’s moving faders and SSL’s automation with total recall.”

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Flavors of Andalucía - Online
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$75.00\nMember Price:\n$65.00 \nThis is a live\, interactive\, hands-on cooking class held online via Zoom. See our registration policies here. \nAndalucía is the largest region of Spain\, in the south\, typically known for its olive trees. However\, it’s also the birthplace of cold soups! Cold soups\, like gazpacho\, are generally known as Spanish food\, but they are actually specific to the south due to the hot temperatures\, and locals need a delicious way to cool down! \nWe’ll keep our cool in the Zoom room and make two soup recipes: one traditional\, one modern. Ajoblanco is a medieval recipe that is said to be the original cold soup. Ajoblanco showcases many aspects of the regional cuisine: recycling day-old bread\, using seasonal ingredients\, and originally made with a mortar and pestle\, a medieval technique if ever there was one! Our modern soup is the Cherry Gazpacho\, a twist on the traditional tomato-based soup. It is sure to delight the taste buds! Camila will also discuss some variations on these recipes\, to inspire your future cold soup creations. \nTo round out our vibrant summer lunch\, you’ll also make another Andalusian specialty: Tortillas de Camarones\, or baby shrimp fritters. It’s a traditional Andalusian tapa from the region of Cadiz\, served year-round but especially during Carnival. \nWe can’t think of anything better to eat when the temperatures rise. Stay cool and cook with us! \nMENU \nAjoblanco: Chilled Garlic and Almond Soup \nCherry Gazpacho \nTortillas de Camarones: Baby Shrimp Fritters \nEquipment and Ingredient list can be found here! \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. Gluten free and dairy free accommodations are available for this menu with advance notice. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nIf you’re new to 18 Reasons Online\, please read this guide: How to Take an Online Class at 18 Reasons. Five calendar days before class\, 18 Reasons may decide to cancel this class if not enough tickets are sold. We will notify registrants by email about cancellations. \nCamila Loew holds a Ph.D. in Humanities and is a certified nutrition consultant. Having lived alongside the Mediterranean for almost two decades\, she believes that the best cooking relies on simple recipes with outstanding ingredients. That’s the Mediterranean way she conveys in her classes\, along with the concept of sobremesa\, which happens to be the name of the company she runs. Sobremesa is the leisurely time we spend gathered around the table. In addition to running Sobremesa Culinary Tours\, through which she offers delicious cultural and culinary experiences abroad for fellow food-lovers\, Camila founded and directs the Food Studies & Gastronomy program at the University of Barcelona\, and teaches academically about Mediterranean food culture to American students abroad. Since 2014\, Camila has been sharing her love of regional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines at 18 Reasons. For more information visit her website www.sobremesa.life \nPhoto by Camila Loew

DESCRIPTION:$25 advance and $28 day of show \nWebsite | Spotify | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nSean Hayes \nSean Hayes is a Bay Area singer-songwriter who makes music to dance to or cry to\, or maybe both at the same time. He was born in New York City\, raised in North Carolina\, and honed his earliest musical chops in a band playing Irish and old-time tunes — but his unique style of deeply felt\, R&B-inflected folk really matured during his two decades singing and playing in cafes\, bars\, and night clubs of San Francisco. \nHis voice layers wonder and heartache upon grit and gravel\, sex and soul. His lyrics carry an unpretentious wisdom. He’s dueted with Aimee Mann; been covered by the Be Good Tanyas; and toured with Anais Mitchell (performing songs from Hadestown\, before it was an award-winning Broadway show). His songs have appeared on NPR\, NBC and HBO.
