SUMMARY:18 Reasons: A Celebration of Moroccan Flavors in France - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. \nFor 44 years\, Morocco was a protectorate of France. This link between the two countries created a pathway for Moroccan cuisine to be introduced and popularized in France. The word tagine refers to the cookware used to make the stew\, which is made of either ceramic or\, more traditionally\, unglazed clay. The varieties of tagines are endless! \nIn this class\, we will celebrate the traditional flavors of a fish tagine scented with preserved lemons and olives. The fish is coated in a traditional Chermoula\, a flavorful-herb spice paste of cilantro\, garlic\, cumin\, paprika\, cayenne\, lemon juice & extra virgin olive oil\, and then cooked on a bed of vegetables. Learn the trick to super smooth and creamy hummus and top everything off with homemade harissa\, the spicy smoky red chili paste that is great on everything! We will also learn how to make preserved lemons; students will take home a jar they made in class to use at home. \nJoin Zoe McLaughlin for an evening in the kitchen\, where she will guide you through her recipes\, inspired by her time cooking and living in Paris. \nMENU \nSmooth & Creamy Hummus with Za’atar & Flatbread \nFish Tagine with Preserved Lemons & Olives \nCouscous with Toasted Slivered Almonds & Raisins \nHomemade Harissa \nPreserved Lemons to Take Home \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Fish\, Tree Nuts\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nZoé McLaughlin was born in Paris and raised in San Francisco. She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked in restaurants in France while she wrote and published her first cookbook – a collection of family recipes influenced by her multicultural upbringing. She now lives in San Francisco\, where she works in the non-profit culinary world and hosts online cooking demonstrations. She has a passion for bringing together the diverse flavors and culinary traditions of the Bay Area with the time tested techniques of classical French cooking.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Karina Rykman\, Guerilla Toss
DESCRIPTION:$20 Advance $25 Day Of Show \nWebsite | Spotify | YouTube | Instagram \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nJoyride Tour 2023” celebrates the upcoming arrival of Karina Rykman’s hugely anticipated debut album\, JOYRIDE\, arriving via AWAL on Friday\, August 18. The album was first heralded earlier this month with the premiere of the single and title track\, “Joyride.” Equal parts thick bass\, ethereal synths\, disco-funk guitar\, and silky\, inviting vocals\, the track – which features signature lead guitar from JOYRIDE co-producer Trey Anastasio – expertly captures Rykman’s jubilant brand of sonic exploration\, bridging an array of genres to arrive at her own compelling and original take on psychedelic indie rock. \nGuerilla Toss \nDig deep enough inside yourself—start treating your body as your sanctuary rather than your enemy—and eventually you’ll find yourself blooming right back out into the sun. That’s the transformation Guerilla Toss trace on their newest album “Famously Alive\,” their effervescent Sub Pop debut. After a decade sprinkling glitter into grit\, building a reputation as one of the most ferociously creative art-rock groups working\, the upstate New York band have eased fully into their light. This is Guerilla Toss at their most luminescent—awake\, alive\, and extending an open invitation to anyone who wants to soak it all up beside them. Singer and lyricist Kassie Carlson\, multi-instrumentalist Peter Negroponte and guitarist Arian Shafiee wrote “Famously Alive” at home in the Catskills during the pervading quiet of the pandemic year. The uncertainty of COVID-19 lockdowns and the total disruption of routine forced Carlson to negotiate with herself in new and challenging ways. “You have to be with yourself all the time during the pandemic\,” she says. “I had to figure out a way to manage my anxiety. The pandemic was hard\, but it helped me get comfortable inside my own body. My peace of mind came out of being thrust into the deepest shit. This album is all about being happy\, being alive\, and strength. It’s meant to inspire people.” \nThe album’s title derives from a poem written by a close friend of the band\, Jonny Tatelman\, who supported Carlson through the early stages of her recovery from opiate addiction. The poem comprises the entirety of the lyrics to the title track\, an exuberant ode to loving your own survival and charting a course into unconditional self-acceptance. “The song ‘Famously Alive’ is about living with purpose and excitement whether you’re famous or not\, accepting your strangeness and thriving even if your successes look different than other people’s\,” notes Carlson. “To me\, ‘Famously Alive’ means flipping the notion of dying famously to living famously\,” Negroponte adds. “I also like to think of it as a way to describe living through something traumatic and coming out of it a stronger\, wiser person.” \nSongs like the expansive\, gleaming “Live Exponential” similarly invite the listener to lean into the light. “It’s about loving yourself and finding a way to be comfortable in your own body—to live life to the fullest and beyond\,” says Carlson. Throughout the record\, Guerilla Toss meet themselves with curiosity\, generosity\, and acceptance even for the harder parts of being alive. Opener “Cannibal Capital\,” a song about the exhaustion and dread of social anxiety\, came together in a flurry toward the end of the album’s sessions. A taut bass groove erupts into competing squalls of guitar and synth that support one of the most immediate and arresting vocal hooks of Guerilla Toss’s catalog to date. \nTogether with guitarist Arian Shafiee\, Carlson and Negroponte cultivated a sound that spliced together psychedelic texturing and Krautrock syncopation with the gloss and glow of contemporary pop music. “I like to combine as many musical influences as possible\,” says Negroponte. “We thought the sleekness of current radio pop would make our dense wall-of-sound aesthetic both more bizarre and more accessible and fun at the same time.” Carlson was similarly inspired by a wide range of artists from around the world after diving deep into obscure 7-inches for her weekly show on Radio Catskill\, Rare Pear Radio. \nWhile writing the album\, Carlson took voice lessons online for the first time. Though she has been singing since she was four years old\, at first with a vocal harmony group in her family’s church\, she hadn’t formally trained her voice since joining Guerilla Toss. The lessons allowed her to deepen and broaden her range\, helping her feel more embodied and connected to her voice. Underneath ripples of Auto-Tune\, playful\, searching vocal melodies suspend lyrics about reaching for yourself and holding fast in your own love. \n“Famously Alive” finds Guerilla Toss coming into the fullness of their power\, celebrating their prismatic idiosyncrasies from a place of optimism and abundance. “It felt like I didn’t need to force myself into this dark place to create anymore\,” Carlson says. “For the first time in my life\, I feel like I’m finally comfortable inside my body.”

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Halloween Boo-don: Handmade Udon - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. See our registration policies here and our rules for in-person events here. \nHalloween is around the corner and there’s no better way to prepare for the holiday than with some spooky handmade udon noodles\, BOO-don…if you will. The slippery\, silky\, chewy texture of each noodle is undeniably addicting\, and it’s almost scary how simple it is to hand make it yourself! Elise will guide you through mixing and shaping the dough\, and\, most importantly\, the foot stomping technique to knead the dough into the perfect texture. Don’t forget a clean pair of socks! \nEven though the noodles need to rest\, we’ll be busy shaping and frying Curry Korokke into the tastiest ghouls of the season\, and whisking up a black sesame dressing to adorn our homestyle salad. We’ll also unveil the secrets to creating a delicate yet umami filled Mentsuyu broth to engulf our Nabeyaki ingredients. All these will come together in a tantalizing pot to simmer\, and we’ll slurp the night away as if we were sitting around a small table in the middle of the Yorii prefecture. \nMENU \nNabeyaki Udon Soup with: \nHandmade Udon Noodles\nMentsuyu broth\nSimmered chicken thighs and vegetables\nMarbled egg \nCurry Korokke (potato croquettes) \nHomestyle Salad with Black Sesame Dressing \n*Menu can be vegetarian with advance notice. Email info@18reasons.org to request a vegetarian substitution.* \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Soy\, Wheat\, Fish\, Eggs\, Sesame. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn and raised in Colorado\, Elise Hayashi grew up in a family where knowing how to use a paring knife was more important than riding a bicycle. This sparked her passion for food and cooking at an early age\, and she enthusiastically relocated to the Bay Area to study nutrition science at UC Berkeley. Outside of the classroom\, Elise helped implement childhood obesity and exercise research\, and worked as a pastry assistant to fill her free time with galettes and mousses. She also broadened her experience with food by studying and cooking her way through the Mediterranean diet in Italy\, and working on an organic farm in Japan. Now\, she is excited to merge her gastronomic backgrounds\, and lean into her Japanese and Korean heratige to share her love of food with the 18 Reasons community. During the rare moments when she is not eating\, Elise can be found trying out new sports\, playing and listening to live music\, or wandering the aisles of grocery stores and farmers’ markets.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Famed biographer Walter Isaacson has just completed a major biography of Elon Musk. Whether you like him\, hate him\, are afraid of him\, or are in awe of him – Elon Musk is one of the most consequential people on the Earth. I believe that even if you hate someone it’s important to know them and while the more recent version of Elon Musk\, in my personal opinion\, leaves a pretty terrible taste in my mouth I’m fascinated by him and I love Walter Isaacson as an author. \nSo\, if you want to learn about who this man is and how he got to the place that he has then join Manny’s lunch time book club! \nWe will meet weekly for 5 weeks on Wednesdays for lunch and discussion at Manny’s (lunch is included in the cost of registration and will be vegetarian). \nIn order to keep up with the book club you will need to read 17 pages a day roughly. \nIf you’re in\, go ahead and register (ideally for all five). \nLooking forward to reading and learning with you. \nIf you have any questions\, please email angelina@welcometomannys.com

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Delinquents
DESCRIPTION:ARGENTINA’S 2024 ACADEMY AWARDS SUBMISSION \n“Rodrigo Moreno’s dreamy and discursive The Delinquents might kick off with one of the most low-key bank robberies anyone has ever attempted\, but it’s hard to overstate how thrilling it feels once the thief finally tells us about what he stole.”\n– David Ehrlich\, Indiewire \n“A consistently playful\, gradually beguiling existential dramedy on the multitudinous subject of work and freedom.”\n– Isaac Feldberg\, RogerEbert.com \n“A genius Argentine tragicomedy on the elusive nature of freedom.”\n– Carlos Aguilar\, The Playlist \nArgentine filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno crafts a heist comedy unlike anything you’ve seen before with THE DELINQUENTS. \nBeguiling and unpredictable\, Cannes Un Certain Regard breakout THE DELINQUENTS reinvents the heist film as a free-flowing adventure like no other. Buenos Aires bank employee Morán (Daniel Eliás) dreams up a scheme to liberate himself from corporate monotony: he’ll steal enough money to support a modest retirement\, then confess and serve prison time while his co-worker holds on to the cash. Soon under pressure by a company investigator\, accomplice Román (Esteban Bigliardi) heads to a remote rural idyll to hide the funds. There\, he encounters a mysterious woman who will transform his life forever. \nWith THE DELINQUENTS\, Moreno melds the existential and the playful to explore the nature of freedom itself. Suffused with timeless beauty\, this cinematic discovery is at turns surreal\, relatable\, funny\, romantic\, surprising\, restorative — and above all — a delight. \nPresented by RoxCine. \nMore shows will be added soon!

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:Big Picture Ranch and Area 23a present the San Francisco premiere screening of the film Common Ground a hopeful and uplifting story of the pioneers of the “Regenerative Movement” who produce tremendous quantities of nutritionally dense food and are working to balance the climate – all while bringing our entire ecosystem back to life. The film explores how Americans from different walks of life\, different political backgrounds\, and different parts of the country share one thing in common –the very soil beneath their feet. The film investigates the power of “regenerative” farming systems –from large to small-scale farmers who are the champions of soil health as the key to unlocking more (and healthier) food to feed America and the world. \nCast includes: Laura Dern\, Rosario Dawson\, Jason Mamoa\, Woody Harrelson\, Ian Somerhalder\, and Donald Glover.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: This Is The Kit\, Rozi Plain
DESCRIPTION:$22 advance and $26 day of show \nWebsite | Spotify | bandcamp | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nThis one has teeth. Album number six from This Is The Kit is named after their song “Careful of Your Keepers\,” and while the keepers might have chompers of their own (they usually do)\, the first baring of squirrelly whites happens in the opening number\, the song that the album was almost named after\, “Goodbye Bite.” \nNow why the hell would we dwell on almosts? Because Kate Stables’ strength as a songwriter welcomes you into the world of mistakes and mishaps\, cruel circumstances and universe-driven surprises. It’s not about making lemonade out of lemons. Just pick up a lemon and chew. Save yourself the trouble of all that lemonade business. \n“A ‘how shit is this’ measuring stick?” sings Stables on “Goodbye Bite.” A practical problem\, defined succinctly\, yet a few moments later the melody carries the words “wish bone broke dancing death people left.” The ability to pulse swiftly from cryptic poetry to honest inquisition is a signature move of the Paris-based\, UK born bandleader\, in the same way that The Undertaker’s signature move was the ‘tombstone piledriver.’ And like being slammed headfirst into the mat\, there’s a sting to This Is The Kit’s lyrical confrontations. They’re forever sharp\, like canines\, perhaps the very same that do the chewing in song number two\, “Inside Outside.” \nOn this record the music is daring and soft\, cutting and warm\, a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. Stables is joined by her stalwart band of not-sick-of-eachother-yet Brits: Rozi Leyden\, Neil Smith & Jamie Whitby-Coles\, plus additional arrangements and extra-curricular instruments from Jesse Vernon. \nThere’s a shared language of their family experience that is as audible as ever in these recordings\, boasting beautiful instrumental performances that still leave the nuanced shape of space required for the human voice to live at the forefront of the songs. Having a shared language and a supportive environment is a pillar of survival\, and making anything new and striking in a modern age as disappointing as this one is as good a survival mechanism as any. \nSurviving change is a constant throughout this record. We are taken to the front lines in the song “More Change\,” where we can celebrate the losing battle of fighting change\, celebrating it with the barbed dancing lyrics that whisk us from the mundane to the massive: “light bulb life changing found a friend…claw sanity back again.” \nGuiding the ship through changing seas is producer Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals). Stables described Rhys’ role as being a “tonesetter\,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording. One noted sonic MVP is a distorted vibraphone. Hear the instrument in the title track with its upper harmonics crunched\, transients smashed\, a sound that is otherwise pure getting gnawed at until the grime matches the warning of the words to be careful of your keepers. \nRhys also acted as scribe\, dutifully maintaining a “conversation log” gathering tiny chunks of wisdom and novelty from the constant talking that goes hand in hand with losing ones’ minds in a recording studio. Tacking the madness onto the bulletin board sets the tone indeed\, almost to prove “if we’ve said all this\, who says we can’t make a brilliant record too.” \nThe brilliance comes back to the bite. “Stuck In A Room” plants the listener in the most familiar of recent quandaries\, wanting to leave but being unable to. There are so many versions of “leaving” one might be attracted to in this disappointing modern age\, and Stables works through them all. The mystery of just what the trouble is should be appreciated\, because then the pain can be shared. We aren’t just gawking at a songwriter having a specific bad day. We’re in the room too. But the song moves with a quickness\, Stables’ singing leading the beat to an uncertain march ahead\, implying that we will get out eventually\, albeit with some tooth-marks in the skin. Call it a souvenir. Call it a mistake to learn from. Just don’t call it late for dinner. \nBy the final song “Dibs\,” we’re nearly chewed through. I won’t spoil the ending\, but it’s got it all. There’s drama and excitement\, an urgency and a proper pleading. There’s comfort and repetition. And comfort and repetition. Repetition\, too. Doesn’t that just about sum up life on Earth? Conflict hits hard and with surprise\, but have the right people around you and you can escape by the skin of your teeth. No better people to do that with than This Is The Kit. Now finish your lemons\, they’re getting cold.
