Duration 1 hour  \nTickets are on a sliding scale basis starting at $30 \nNo one turned away due to lack of funds\, please contact visit@500cappstreet.org \nLa Pocha Nostra’s Artistic Directors Balitrónica and Gómez-Peña will present a duet performance featuring excerpts from their most recent performance manuscripts and bank of ritual actions. Utilizing a casino roulette and several tarot decks\, Balitrónica will use various forms of oracular magic to select spoken word texts and props for Gómez-Peña’s live performance. The fate of the script and the performance are determined by methods of divination\, chance\, and direct contact with the spirits that be at the dining room of 500 Capp Street. \nAlso on view in the Dining Room starting August 3rd is an evolving exhibition of selected objects from Gomez-Peña’s own “living archives” arranged in dialog with the eclectic collection already inhabiting the room. Curated by Emma Tramposch (La Pocha Nostra’s Executive Director and Curator of the Living Archives) and Lian Ladia (Curator\, Exhibitions and Programs\, 500 Capp Street). Both partners have been investigating topics vital to a current conversation about decolonization and the nature and future of museums and collecting—including who is served and represented by museums\, what it means to curate an archive for artistic reinvention\, political dialog and spiritual survival. \nAbout the Artists \nGuillermo Gómez-Peña is a performance artist\, writer\, activist\, radical pedagogue and artistic director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. Born in Mexico City\, he moved to the US in 1978\, and since 1995\, his three homes have been San Francisco\, Mexico City and the “road”. \nHis performance work and 21 books have contributed to the debates on cultural\, generational\, and gender diversity\, border culture and North-South relations. His artwork has been presented at over one thousand venues across the US\, Canada\, Latin America\, Europe\, Russia\, South Africa and Australia. A MacArthur Fellow\, USA Artists Fellow\, and a Bessie\, Guggenheim\, and American Book Award recipient\, he is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines in the US\, Mexico\, and Europe and a contributing editor to The Drama Review (NYU-MIT)\, the Performance Art Week Journal of the Venice Biennale\, and emisférica\, the publication of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (NYU). Gómez-Peña is currently a Patron for the London-based Live Art Development Agency\, and a Senior Fellow in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics. \nBalitrónica (US/Mexico) Artistic Co-Director\, Priestess & Psychomagic Occultist. Balitrónica is a cyborg-feminist poet\, performance artist\, hereditary witch\, 2nd Degree\, Cabot Priestess\, and co-Artistic director of La Pocha Nostra. Since joining La Pocha Nostra\, she has made a full-time performance practice that explores the ideas of ritual psychomagic acts\, occult methods of transcendence\, and the human body as conduit. In addition to her formal training in musical theater and Victorian literature\, she holds an MFA in Poetry from Mills College. Her performance work has been largely influenced by her time spent living in a 17th Century Catholic Convent in Paris with a Dominican Order of Nuns. Balitrónica has been touring internationally with Gómez-Peña since 2013 and currently resides between San Francisco\, Mexico City\, and the San Diego/Tijuana Border. \nThe Mex Files: A Divination Ritual would not be possible without the support of Tieger Foundation and La Pocha Nostra.

DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been reading the news lately then you’ve probably seen reporting on a lot of major wins for labor unions around the country…or at the very least big strikes and fights being waged for fair compensation of their members. \nBetween Amazon\, Starbucks\, and the recent writers and actors strikes in Hollywood the question is out there is this a hot labor summer or a longer-term trend? \nComing to Manny’s to discuss this very question are two of San Francisco’s most senior labor leaders Rudy Gonzalez\, of the building and trades\, and Kim Tavaglione\, The executive director of the San Francisco Labor Council. \nIs there something going on around the country right now\, perhaps something about the post pandemic era\, that’s making labor unions stronger and more bold? \nOr has this been going on the whole time and it’s just being reported on more in this moment. What are folks fighting for and what are they entitled to? How does the advent of AI and streaming tools and gig workers affect the fight for fair compensation and fair work practices these days? \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nAbout Rudy Gonzalez: \nRudy Gonzalez carried his first Union card at the age of 18 as a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. After serving the rank and file as shop steward\, he volunteered as a member organizer and learned to campaign in the South\, where he saw firsthand the struggle that workers face when they attempt to unionize under hostile conditions. \nInformed by his Catholic upbringing’s social justice doctrine and motivated by a sense of stewardship instilled by his father’s lifelong career as a firefighter\, he found purpose in building power for workers. \nIn 2008\, he was hired as a full-time Business Representative and Organizer for Teamsters 856. He negotiated private agreements under the NLRA and RLA and public sector contracts under MMBA\, EERA\, and HEERA. After rising to the rank of Organizing Director and was elected twice as Vice President. During his time at 856\, he led organizing campaigns that nearly doubled the size and strength of the local union\, which now boasts 17\,000 members. \nIn May of 2018\, Rudy was selected by his peers on the SFLC Executive Committee to assist the Council as Interim Executive Director. In August of 2018\, Rudy was nominated and elected unanimously by the Council delegates to a two-year term\, becoming the first person of color and youngest person elected in the 125-year history of the SFLC. \nAt the Labor Council\, Rudy led the staff team to assist affiliated unions with political mobilization\, contract campaigns\, and strategic organizing. Under his leadership\, the Council shored up its finances\, hired the first-ever Campaign Director\, and revamped the political and affiliate support apparatus. Rudy oversaw program expansion of the We Rise SF labor center for immigrant rights which serves workers and families with naturalization services and other immigration casework. The Council also unified labor to win both the highest minimum compensation ordinance for home care workers in the US and a citywide project labor agreement for construction workers. \nIn 2021\, Gonzalez was elected to lead the San Francisco Building & Construction Trades Council. Under his leadership\, affiliated unions won the first community workforce agreement in the State with the University of California for over 1 billion dollars in work. The Council has launched a first of its kind program to ready women of color and non-binary workers for apprenticeship and mentor them into union and/or industry leadership. The Council also sponsored legislation to help prevent exploitation of the residential construction sector by authoring and winning the Wage Theft Prevention Act of 2022. \nRudy enjoys volunteering his time on various non-profit boards and spending his off time with his family in Oakland\, where he resides with his wife\, Sarah\, and their three children\, Zoe (14)\, Jules (12)\, Isaac (5)\, and the Council mascot\, Oliver The Bulldog. \nAbout Kim Tavaglione \nKim Tavaglione joined the Council as Campaign Director in September of 2018\, after serving as an Executive Committee member for nearly a decade. Kim previously worked as a representative with SEIU and then as community and political director at NUHW\, bringing years of experience organizing and campaigning with public\, private\, and nonprofit workers. \nIn 2020 Kim moved into the role of Executive Director of the Council\, becoming the first woman to lead the Council. Kim uses her leadership and experience to assist affiliates with strategy development to continuously build power for the working-class movement.

DESCRIPTION:The Shenson Faculty Concert Series returns this summer with free concerts spotlighting CMC’s talented faculty members. Each year\, the Shenson Foundation sponsors free community concerts for musical projects to support CMC faculty as performing artists and ensure their work on stage is shared and celebrated in our community. \nThis year’s accomplished presenters will highlight a wide variety of musical styles\, techniques\, and creative inspirations—from jazz to classical to folk traditions\, original compositions\, and music as a tool for social justice and historical and cultural reflection. \n    July 13: Rita Lackey\, voice/piano\n    July 20: Dorisiya Yosifova\, violin\n    August 3: Erick Peralta\, piano\n    August 10: Jon Jang\, piano \nThe Neo-Creolism of Peruvian Music with Erick Peralta\, piano \nThursday\, August 3 at 7pm  \nSha’ar Zahav (290 Dolores St\, San Francisco) \nFREE \nThis will be a musical journey of original arrangements for jazz quintet\, highlighting compositions from the música criolla songbook of Peru\, as well as the standard American Jazz repertoire. The works will blend traditional and folkloric sounds\, with contemporary and jazz elements\, with the intent of proposing a “nuevo criollo:” a Neo-Creolism of Peruvian song. \nThis event will be hosted by our Mission District neighbors Sha’ar Zahav.  RSVP is recommended\, but there will be space for walk-up patrons at the door. \nAbout the Performers: \nErick Peralta has been on faculty at Community Music Center since 2016\, teaching private lessons on piano and leading several Jazz and Latin Jazz ensembles. Erick Peralta is a versatile musician with a special appreciation for all styles of music\, permitting him to keep open ears for the development of music\, while still keeping in mind tradition and history. From an early age\, Erick was exposed to various styles of music thanks to his father\, such as Latin-Pop\, Afro-Peruvian\, and Afro Cuban music. Classically trained from 6 years old\, he began playing professionally in the year 2005\, at the age of 15\, then branching out in the San Francisco Bay Area with various Jazz\, Rock\, Latin Jazz\, and Salsa groups. \nFollowing his studies at SF Community Music Center and then the Jazzschool in Berkeley. Erick has had jazz studies with late pianist Ray Santisi\, Laszlo Gardony\, Danilo Perez\, Tia Fuller\, Ed Tomassi\, David Santoro\, as well as with Papo Lucca from Sonora Ponceña\, and Oscar Hernandez of Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Now a graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music\, Erick currently resides in the city of San Francisco. Past notable performances include having worked with multi-Grammy winners Alejandro Sanz\, Luis Enrique\, and Susana Baca; as well has worked with artists such as Pedrito Martinez\, John Santos\, Juan Medrano “Cotito”\, La India\, Tito Nieves\, Bayonics\, and Grupo 5\, and more. \nErick has taken part performing in various festivals and venues\, such as: San Jose Jazz Festival\, the Latin Grammy Awards\, Fillmore Jazz Festival\, the Independent\, The Regency Ball Room\, The Fillmore\, the Blue Note Napa\, San Francisco International Salsa Festival\, Berklee Performance Center\, Boston Convention Center\, the Beantown Jazz Festival\, and many more. \nAlong with performing\, Erick works in composing and arranging in Jazz\, Pop\, and Latin music. DESCRIPTION:Doméstica Realidad is a captivating piece where comedy and social awareness merge into an unforgettable theatrical experience. It’s a collective creation about the unresolved conflict between women and the domestic space.  \nThree domestic situations explore hierarchical relationships\, contradictions\, and conflicts in an activity historically relegated to the female universe. A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment. If you’ve not yet heard or tried these buns\, think of them as cousins to the American cinnamon bun. \nStudents will learn to make a versatile sweet\, enriched\, yeasted dough\, then transform it into four distinct\, showstopping Swedish classics: cardamom\, cinnamon\, vanilla custard\, and almond-toffee. Never worked with enriched dough before? Not to worry! Kelsey will teach you to “read your dough” throughout the entire process using your senses\, providing tips and tricks based on what you see\, smell\, and feel. From this one dough\, students will create four distinct beautiful\, complex shapes—one for each of the buns. DESCRIPTION:Doméstica Realidad is a captivating piece where comedy and social awareness merge into an unforgettable theatrical experience. It’s a collective creation about the unresolved conflict between women and the domestic space.  \nThree domestic situations explore hierarchical relationships\, contradictions\, and conflicts in an activity historically relegated to the female universe. A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment. His work incorporates visual and stylistic elements of street art\, graffiti\, pop culture and cubism to depict the human condition. Osgood layers a combination of acrylic\, aerosol\, and oil paint on either canvas or wood panel to create his vibrant and textural paintings. This process-oriented approach mirrors the multifaceted nature of memory and the collective human experience. Osgood holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington State University with a minor in Fine Arts. He participates in exhibitions across the US and his murals can be found along the West Coast\, UK\, and Spain. \nSTEVE JAVIEL (b. Los Angeles\, CA\, 1981) is an urban impressionist painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco\, CA\, and participates in exhibitions along the West Coast.

As a strutter/popper\, she is the first woman to represent Playboyz Inc. since its formation in 1981\, making it one of the Bay Area’s oldest dance crews. She has danced for artists including Sanford Biggers and Grammy winning Kendrick Lamar.Acoustic Set. \nRafa Bustamante (la Gente) and Javier Navarrette Duo\nGuitar and Cajon Duo\nJavier Navarrette is a professional percussionist\, musician\, composer\, arranger and educator living in Oakland\, California\, specializing in Afro-Caribbean music. Javier’s performance and recording career spans over three decades. Millions of refugees from Ukraine have crossed borders into neighboring countries\, and many more have been forced to move inside the country.\n“The situation is disconcerting\, this is what several Ukrainian women I talk to are telling me. They agree in shrinking the importance of material belongings\, including the roof under which they raised the children who accompany them\, and which\, as they can learn from the news\, has now turned into ruins. The real heartbreaker has been to leave their husbands fighting with rudimentary resources against a Goliath armed outright. The two typical words in any farewell “see you soon” have been replaced by “love you forever”. The chances of surviving are swinging at the rhythm of the bombs and the decisions taken by political leaders coerced by economic interests.”\nThis series of photographs were taken at the Polish border of Medyka and the town of Przemyšl during the month of March 2022. DESCRIPTION:Doméstica Realidad is a captivating piece where comedy and social awareness merge into an unforgettable theatrical experience. It’s a collective creation about the unresolved conflict between women and the domestic space.  \nThree domestic situations explore hierarchical relationships\, contradictions\, and conflicts in an activity historically relegated to the female universe. A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment. Join us to learn the techniques behind a comforting bowl of beef pho at home. We’ll pair the noodle soup with some simple appetizers from Central Vietnam: steamed rice cakes and homemade sausages wrapped in rice paper. An all around food professional\, Linda expanded the distribution for artisan tofu maker\, Hodo Soy\, and led the development of La Cocina’s municipal marketplace\, where she uses food as a creative approach to economic development. Linda’s specialties include Malaysian cuisine\, Chinese cuisine\, various Southeast Asian cuisines\, and private classes and dinners at 18 Reasons.

DESCRIPTION:Doméstica Realidad is a captivating piece where comedy and social awareness merge into an unforgettable theatrical experience. It’s a collective creation about the unresolved conflict between women and the domestic space.  \nThree domestic situations explore hierarchical relationships\, contradictions\, and conflicts in an activity historically relegated to the female universe. A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment.
