SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Future of the Transamerica Pyramid
DESCRIPTION:The Transamerica Pyramid is easily the most famous building in San Francisco. Built in 1972\, it has come to define the city’s skyline and its spirit. Some have even said that it’s a metaphor for the city by the Bay. \nCities around the country face huge questions about what to do with their downtowns and office buildings. San Franciso\, and many cities like it\, seem to have more questions than answers when it comes to the future. There are lots of uncertainties around commerical office space\, the impact of WFH and whether offices can make for good housing. \nOne person who isn’t uneasy is real estate developer and new owner of the Transamerica Pyramid\, Michael Shvo. As he said in a Chronicle op-ed\, he’s betting big on San Francisco. His company\, SHVO\, has committed $400 million to transforming the skyscraper and its surrounding neighborhood into a destination filled with beautiful redwoods and unique experiences. \nJoin us for a fireside chat with the Michael to discuss his vision for the Transamerica Pyramid and what it means for the future of San Francisco. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT MICHAEL SHVO: \nMichael Shvo is the founder\, Chairman\, and CEO of SHVO\, a leading real estate owner\, investor\, and developer of unique and innovative luxury and landmark properties. SHVO currently oversees a portfolio of more than $8 billion\, including residential\, hospitality\, and commercial space. Michael draws from his diverse background in real estate – from brokerage to marketing and sales to development – to guide his firm in creating and reimagining one-of-a-kind properties at some of the most important and sought-after locations in the world. In the world of luxury real estate\, Michael Shvo represents a rare combination of business acumen and aesthetic sensibility. \nMichael leads the firm’s investment and transaction strategy\, capital markets\, site selection\, design and conceptualization. He anchors a team of some of the world’s most respected investors including pensions funds\, insurance companies\, financial institutions\, and other leading institutional investors\, who share SHVO’s vision of creating extreme value by elevating how people live and work. \nMichael founded SHVO in 2004 and built a reputation for groundbreaking residential lifestyle concepts inspired by\, and frequently in partnership with some of the world’s leading luxury brands. That included collaborations with world-renowned architects\, designers\, and fashion brands\, including Lord Norman Foster\, Peter Marino\, Renzo Piano\, Herzog & de Meuron\, Rafael Vinoly\, Jean-Michel Gathy & Philippe Starck. \nMichael pioneered the marriage of fashion and real estate with Armani Casa at 20 Pine Street\, a concept that continues to be emulated throughout the world. \nMichael also has great passion for art and is known for creatively marrying the art and real estate worlds. In 2013\, SHVO created the renowned public art installation “Sheep Station” in Manhattan\, which transformed an empty former gas station in Chelsea into a whimsical scene of grassy hills and epoxy stone and bronze sheep sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne. In late 2019\, SHVO opened Les Lalanne at The Raleigh Hotel Gardens in Miami Beach.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Pork - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Pork is centered around this most versatile animal protein. Two dishes\, two meals suitable for entertaining or just celebrating a weeknight. \nWe will save time\, effort\, and money on our first dish. Rather than butchering a whole hog for traditional porchetta\, we will do ours in a weeknight-friendly version. Still some butchering\, as we learn to butterfly and roll a pork tenderloin\, then stuff it with porchetta flavors of garlic\, lemon\, and fennel. Wrapping it up in bacon and then roasting it will give us a chance to learn the secrets of roasting meat. Then onto the science of mashed potatoes for the best version ever\, and some produce-butchery as we prep broccoli rabe and even learn how to pronounce the name of this versatile vegetable! \nOur second dish will take us north to Germany. We will take apart a pork butt\, find out why it is located in the shoulder\, and sear it into a stew with apples and cabbage. More apples and cabbages outside the stew as a finishing gesture slaw to top off the dish. Then Chef Mike will teach us how to craft his favorite easy dumplings as we make a delicious pile of spaetzle to serve under our delicious stew. Not a drop to be wasted! \nMENU \nPorchetta-Flavored Pork Tenderloin Wrapped in Bacon\, Mashed Potatoes\, Broccoli Rabe \nPork Shoulder\, Cabbage\, and Apple Stew on Spaetzle \nThis menu contains the following common wheat\, egg\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Community Dinner: Just for Pun
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$18.00 \nA one-plate dinner with beer and wine available for sale. This is not a cooking class. This seating is limited to 40 guests. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nPop in for April’s Community Dinner\, where our very own Chef Mike and Community Programs Manager\, Elise\, are teaming up to welcome Spring in the only way they know how – with tasty food and terrible jokes. Mike and Elise have been joyfully cooking together since 2017\, creating menus that range from unintentionally burnt oranges\, uncomplicated happy hour bites\, to daily online classes. You may have seen the two of them having a grate time bantering over Zoom while sharing puns and always questioning when the salt went into a recipe. Grab a spot at either seating as we open our doors for you to join in the shared love and respect that Mike and Elise have for our 18 Reasons community and each other. \nNote: this ticket page is for the first seating from 6-7 pm. We do not have reserved seating and dining will take place at communal tables. We also have an option for guests who prefer to take their meal to go: click here to reserve a plate for pick-up only. For our second seating at 7:30 pm\, please click here. \nMENU \nTwice Baked Goat Cheese Souffles \nSalad of Chicories with a Burnt Orange Dressing \nFava Bean Tartine – featuring Peter’s Peck of Pickled Peppers \nPecan Tart with Miso Caramel \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy\, Eggs\, Wheat\, Soy\, Tree Nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to attend\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. Because we are cooking in large batches\, we are very limited in accommodating allergens and dietary restrictions. \nBorn and raised in Colorado\, Elise Hayashi grew up in a family where knowing how to use a paring knife was more important than riding a bicycle. This sparked her passion for food and cooking at an early age\, and she enthusiastically relocated to the Bay Area to pursue a BA in Nutrition Science at UC Berkeley. Outside of the classroom\, Elise helped implement childhood obesity and exercise research with the Nutrition Policy Institute\, and also worked as a pastry assistant to fill her free time with galettes and mousses. After graduation\, she spent time abroad working on an organic farm where she gained an appreciation for the labor and commitment that goes into producing food everyday. Now\, she is excited about being a part of 18 Reasons to merge her gastronomic backgrounds and to share her love of food with the Bay Area community. During the rare moments when she is not eating\, Elise can be found trying out new sports\, playing and listening to live music\, or wandering the aisles of grocery stores and farmers’ markets. \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching\, he tends to his backyard garden\, helps his wife to can and preserve food\, and loves to cook for his friends and family. \nABOUT COMMUNITY DINNER \nOnce a month\, we open our doors to friends new and old\, welcoming all to our share a table and a delicious meal. Every month is something different\, but tickets are always $18 and always tasty. Wine and beer are for sale at the event. Kids welcome!

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Ahead of the Curve: Celebrating Lesbian Visibility
DESCRIPTION:With a fist full of credit cards\, a lucky run at the track\, and a drive to connect her community\, Franco Stevens launched Curve\, the best-selling lesbian magazine ever published. When Franco learns that Curve will fold within the year\, she faces a crisis. She’s been away from the helm for 10 years due to a disabling injury which she kept largely secret. Franco now questions the relevance of the magazine and her own voice in the face of accelerating threats to LGBTQ community. To forge a path forward\, Franco reaches out to women working in today’s queer spaces to understand what’s at stake. Ultimately\, Franco’s story offers inspiration as we face an uncertain future for LGBTQ rights where visibility remains one of our most powerful tools to combat discrimination. \nThis will be a special screening of the film followed by a powerful conversation with those who helped create Curve. To top it all off\, join us at Mother (the newest lesbian bar in SF) afterwards for a fabulous evening of lesbian joy and connections. What more could you ask for! \nManny’s never turns away people due to lack of funds. SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power
DESCRIPTION:What is power? Who wields it? How can it be owned\, contested\, and exercised? For Asian women whose embodiment of power has culturally been limited to either Dragon Lady\, Lotus Blossom or Tiger Mom\, these questions are ever more prevalent. Using jade as an allusion to more diverse definitions of power\, the exhibition pays homage to overlooked figures in our history and establishes new legacies of leadership for a more equitable future for AAPI women everywhere. \nPresented by Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) as part of their 26th annual United States of Asian America Festival: REIMAGINING HORIZONS \nCurator\nYeu Q Nguyen \nExhibiting Artists\nAnh Lee\nAJ Schnettler\nChoppy Oshiro\nIna Kaur\nIS/LAND Asian American Performance Collaborative\nJoanna L. Jang may give a short performance to ground the presentation in how he has engaged with “the work” of change-making. \nThis event will be conducted online via video conferencing. RSVP to receive the link to join\, emailed prior to the start of the discussion. \nAbout the Artist: \nFor four decades\, the trajectory of composer-pianist Jon Jang’s work mirrors the development of a multiracial democratic New American Majority from his unique perspective. Inspired by the music from the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s\, Jang has collaborated with Max Roach in their work SenseUs (1990). “Eleanor Bumpurs” (1993) and “Can’t Stop Cryin’ for America: Black Lives Matter!” (2017) represent Jang’s works in response to the legal lynching of Black Americans. Jang’s Reparations Now! Concerto for Large Ensemble and Taiko (1987) pays tribute to the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations and shouts out a clarion call for reparations for Black Americans. \nJang also explores Chinese American transnational history in works such as The Chinese American Symphony (2007)\, a work that pays tribute to the Chinese immigrant laborers who built the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. Jang\, a grandson of a paper son\, composed “Island: The Immigrant Suite No. 2” for the Kronos Quartet about the Chinese immigrants who were incarcerated on Angel Island in San Francisco during the Chinese Exclusion Act era. \nJang has toured with Max Roach\, James Newton\, David Murray\, Jiebing Chen and Min Xiao-Fen in Europe\, China\, South Africa\, Canada and the United States. \nPeople who are interested in this workshop can dive deeper by exploring private lessons and group classes and ensembles at CMC.

SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: Who Does That Bitch Think She Is?: Craig Seligman & Ms. Bob Davis in Conversation on Doris Fish and the Rise of Drag
DESCRIPTION:In WHO DOES THAT BITCH THINK SHE IS: Doris Fish and the Rise of Drag\, author Craig Seligman dives into the short but abundant life of Doris Fish (born Philip Mills in 1952). There were effectively three Dorises—the quiet visual artist\, the glorious drag queen\, and the hunky male sex worker who supported the other two. He started performing in Sydney in 1972 as a member of Sylvia and the Synthetics\, a psycho troupe that represented the first anarchic flowering of queer creative energy in the post-Stonewall era. After moving to San Francisco in the mid-’70s\, he became the driving force behind years of sidesplitting drag shows that were loved as much as you can love throwaway trash—which is what everybody thought they were. No one\, Doris included\, perceived them as political theater\, when in fact they were accomplishing satire’s deepest dream: not just to rail against society\, but to change it. Seligman recounts a dynamic period in queer history — from Stonewall to AIDS — giving insight into how our ideas about gender have broadened to make drag the phenomenon we know it as today. \nIn conversation with Ms. Bob Davis\, founder and director of the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive and curator of the GLBT Historical Society’s Doris Fish: Ego as Artform exhibition\, Seligman will discuss the life of this outrageous performer and artist and how we can reflect on Doris Fish’s legacy as a guide and inspiration in the fight against current conservative backlash against drag. \nSPEAKERS \nCraig Seligman (he/him/his) has written for and edited at a host of magazines\, journals\, newspapers\, and websites. He is the author of Sontag and Kael: Opposites Attract Me (2004). He lives in Brooklyn. \nMs. Bob Davis (she/her/hers) is the founder and director of the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive. In the 1990s she served two terms on the GLBT Historical Society Board of Directors.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: San Francisco\, Mi Amor!
DESCRIPTION:Brava presents\nSan Francisco\, Mi Amor!\nThe 80’s: Queer Comedy\, Taquerias\, The Castro\, The Mission\, Mullets & Shoulder Pads So Wide You Can Fly!\nWritten & Performed by Monica Palacios\nApril 28 – 29\, 2023 in Brava’s Cabaret\nFriday and Saturday at 7:30pm \nRenowned Chicana lesbian writer/performer Monica Palacios presents her solo show: San Francisco\, Mi Amor!\, about the start of her queer comedy career and activism in San Francisco during the 1980s. A challenging decade to be an out Chicana lesbian comic as AIDS is front page news\, causing mass hysteria and shining a negative light on the LGBTQ community. Monica takes this bleak time in history and shares her triumphant story about being one of the first Chicana lesbian comics performing at the Valencia Rose Cabaret\, the first gay comedy club in the nation. She’s also a Film Student at San Francisco State University trying to figure out how to take social justice courses from Angela Davis. Monica is happily living with her lesbian sister\, Eleanor—double dyke familia! Palacios is enchanted by and lusts after the women making her burritos at Taqueria La Cumbre. Her day job is waitressing at a funky Mexican restaurant at the tourist trap Pier 39 and she reminisces about birthing the comedy troupe Culture Clash. Monica meets and auditions for actor Edward James Olmos on 24th Street during a Dia de Los Muertos festival and also shares stories of grooming her lesbian mullet and mucho mucho mas! Throughout the play\, projected images will be shown from this time period: funky first hand-made flyers\, headshots\, business cards\, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. \nSan Francisco’s Latino Mission District was a hot spot for this blossoming lesbian comedian performing at what are now historical queer and queer friendly venues such as the Valencia Rose Cabaret\, ground zero for the Queer Comedy Movement; Artemis Cafe\, a lesbian restaurant and space; Amelia’s\, a lesbian bar and the Galeria de La Raza\, an art gallery. Monica and a handful of LGBTQ comics were bravely performing despite the homophobic atmosphere. Palacios stood out amongst her peers with her unique brand of Chicana lesbian humor focusing on nationality and sexuality in one breath. \nSan Francisco\, Mi Amor!\, is a comedic look back at a pioneering career during a remarkable time in LGBTQ and Chicana history. \nABOUT THE COMEDIAN\nMonica Palacios is a Chicana lesbian playwright and solo performer living in Los Angeles\, creating work promoting the LGBTQ Latinx experience. Palacios is one of the first Chicana lesbian comics to be out and proud on stage during the 80s in San Francisco when the AIDS crisis was raging and homophobia was rampant. Because of her triumphant history\, national and international scholars have critically engaged her work in academic journals\, books\, dissertations and conference panels. Numerous undergraduate and graduate courses regularly incorporate her live\, published and video archived work into their curricula. Monica is a 2024 United States Artist Fellow Nominee. She is featured in the new queer film: STAND UP\, STAND OUT: The Making of a Comedy Movement\, winner of Best Documentary Santa Fe Film Festival 2021\, about the first gay comedy club in the nation in San Francisco during the 1980s\, directed by David Pavlosky. Palacios received the Nancy Dean Lesbian Playwriting Award 2021 by Open Meadows Foundation. Monica was selected as the Lucille Geier Lakes Writer-in-Residence at Smith College\, Spring 2019. Monica was granted The McKenna Guest Theater Artist Award 2019 at Holyoke Community College. Palacios received a Postdoctoral Rockefeller Fellowship from UC Santa Barbara\, enabling her to write\, direct and produce her play: Sweet Peace. Monica has worked with iconic playwrights: Maria Irene Fornés\, Luis Alfaro\, Migdalia Cruz and Paula Vogel. Palacios has received numerous awards\, including from the City of Los Angeles as a Latinx LGBTQ Trailblazer 2017. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declared October 12\, 2012 “Monica Palacios Day” honoring her 30-year career as a pioneering Chicana lesbian writer/performer. \nTICKETS\n$20 + fees\nRunning time: 75 minutes
