SUMMARY:Public Works: Outside Lands Night Show: VNSSA + Nala + Martyn Bootyspoon
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 11th\, 10pm – 3am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nTickets will be available at the door night of. \nMain Room: \nVNSSA \nNala \nTrina Sparx \nLoft Hosted by Make Room \nMartyn Bootyspoon \nBastiengoat \nMake Room DJ’s \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nVNSSA BIO: \nVNSSA DOES NOT EXIST IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC BECAUSE IT IS HER CHOICE\, SHE EXISTS IN IT BECAUSE IT IS HER CALLING. \nVNSSA has always had a passion for music\, even as a child. The Newport Beach native now calls Los Angeles home\, and has immersed herself into the local electronic scene. Although Santa never gave her the turntables she wanted at a young age\, she soon found herself drumming in local rock and indie rock bands. From there she started djing\, and began performing at local clubs and house parties. After djing for 7 years and producing for 3\, her debut single was released in early 2018 on House of Hustle Records and since\, she has released multiple EP’s and singles on labels such as Dirtybird Records\, Higher Ground\, Dim Mak\, Sweat It Out\, Psycho Disco\, Box of Cats\, Strangelove Recordings\, and many more\, including a Beatport #1 single “Word”\, with Walker & Royce\, on Black Book Records/ HotBoi. Her live sets cover all genres of house and techno\, although don’t be surprised to hear some classic disco as well. VNSSA performs regularly at well-known venues all over the country and festivals including; Coachella\, Dirtybird Campout\, Lightning in a Bottle\, EDC (Las Vegas\, Orlando\, and Mexico)\, Hard Summer\, and more. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nNALA BIO: \nHailing from the vibrant city of Miami\, Nala got her start playing in underground nightclubs where she developed a reputation as a reliable tastemaker and energetic performer. Her knowledge of house\, indie dance\, electro\, and breaks made her a versatile and compelling choice for the local market and helped establish her “as one of Miami’s top female DJs and certainly an act making some serious strides on the circuit.” (EARMILK) \nIn 2020\, her positive attitude and infectious DJ style caught the attention of Dirtybird Records’ founder\, Claude VonStroke\, who now actively manages her career. \nCurrently\, Nala is a hardworking member of the Los Angeles electronic music scene. Her unique take on Riot Grrrl-style vocals and affinity for analog soundscapes has helped garner the attention of the industry’s top producers and allowed her to pave her own space within the community. \nIn July 2022\, Nala launched her own label\, Mi Domina\, a femme-dominant electronic label that is intent on merging punk rock aesthetics with underground dance music. The label’s first release\, Get Familiar EP\, with fellow Dirtybird artist\, E.R.N.E.S.T.O\, was released the same day receiving accolades and support from Beatport and EDM.com to name a few. \nWith a slew of releases lined up for 2022-2023\, Nala is now playing shows and festivals across the globe. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support. You’ll receive about 4 messages per month\, message and data rates may apply\, and you can text STOP to cancel at any time.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Handmade Halloumi: Cheesemaking & Appetizers - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on cooking class culminating in a family-style dinner served with a glass of wine or beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nAn ancient Cyprus cheese from the Byzantine era\, halloumi is one of the most popular Mediterranean cheeses around. It’s one of the rare cheeses that doesn’t melt when seared\, it grills like a dream\, and it transforms into beautiful mezze and appetizer plates. Yet it’s somehow still underutilized in our American kitchens. The class will kick off with a halloumi tasting and breezy lesson of the cheese’s rich history and tradition. Then you’ll make your own halloumi by-hand\, and master searing it to golden perfection. Using store-bought versions while your own halloumi cures\, you’ll also learn how to incorporate this versatile cheese into three easy summer dishes. We’ll enjoy the bounty together at the end of class! Every student will leave with their own piece of halloumi that will be ready to eat the next day. \nMENU \nHandmade Halloumi with Cow’s Milk \nSeared Halloumi with Stone Fruit and Torn Mint—A simple\, composed dish with peaches or nectarines and mint that’s as easy as it is beautiful. \nGrilled Halloumi\, Corn\, and Tomato Herb Salad—Grilled halloumi meets summer’s corn\, sweet tomatoes\, and herbs in this simple and fresh summer salad. \nHalloumi Mediterranean Platter: Golden Halloumi\, Heirloom Tomatoes\, Cucumbers\, Olives\, and perfectly-cooked Eggs with Pita or Lavash. A classic breakfast that highlights the season’s produce that’s fit for lunch or al fresco dinner\, too. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy (Cow\, Sheep and Goat)\, Wheat\, Eggs. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAuthor of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, Kirstin Jackson is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Jinpa
DESCRIPTION:On the path of life\, sometimes we meet someone whose dreams overtake our own to the point that they converge. This is a story of revenge and redemption. On an isolated road passing through the vast barren plains of Tibet\, a truck driver who has accidentally run over a sheep chances upon a young man who is hitching a ride. As they drive and chat\, the truck driver notices that his new friend has a silver dagger strapped to his leg; he comes to understand that this man is out to kill someone who wronged him earlier in life. As he drops the hitchhiker off at a fork in the road\, little does the truck driver realize that their short time together has changed everything\, and that their destinies are inexorably intertwined. \nDirected by Pema Tseden. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Kokomo City
DESCRIPTION:In the wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary Kokomo City\, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City – Daniella Carter\, Koko Da Doll\, Liyah Mitchell\, and Dominique Silver – who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back\, the film vibrates with energy\, sex\, challenge\, and hard-earned wisdom. \nThis vital portrait\, edited and shot by Smith in bold black and white\, is her feature directorial debut. A two-time Grammy-nominated producer\, singer\, and songwriter\, Smith made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show. Executive produced by Lena Waithe\, Kokomo City won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award\, as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Staff Pick: Best in Show
DESCRIPTION:Yancy’s pick! \n“It’s a commonplace that pets resemble their owners (or vice versa)\, but the phenomenon has rarely been explored with such dogged glee. A ‘mockumentary’ tracking half-a-dozen contestants as they prepare for the annual Mayflower Dog Show in Philadelphia\, Christopher Guest’s film combines flea-on-the-wall observation with direct-to-camera interviews… Co-written by Guest and Eugene Levy\, but apparently largely improvised\, this caricatures a broad cross-section of social archetypes\, from the gay couple (McKean and Higgins) with their shih-tzu\, to the neurotic yuppies (Posey and Hitchcock) with their Weimaraner\, and Guest’s backwoods cajun\, with his bloodhound Hubert. The performances are perfect\, and the actors aren’t bad either… The dog show itself is enlivened by an outrageous comic turn from Fred Willard as an addled TV commentator suffering from a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. Levy is fun\, too\, as a cuckolded salesman with two left feet (literally).” – Time Out (London)

SUMMARY:Manny’s: SFC Live: The State of Bay Area Movie Theaters + ‘Ask Mick LaSalle’ LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Great films deserve great theaters. But Bay Area indie cinemas have been facing a challenging era\, from pandemic shutdowns and COVID restrictions to cautious audiences and Hollywood strikes. \nHow are local theater owners changing the movie-going experience to attract audiences back into auditoriums? Are they optimistic about the outlook for this year and beyond? And what will it take to ensure Bay Area movie houses thrive? \nJoin The Chronicle’s Datebook team for a discussion about local theaters and the movies at 6 p.m. Aug. 16\, at Manny’s cafe in San Francisco. Chronicle movie writer G. Allen Johnson will sit down with Roxie Theater executive director Lex Sloan\, CinemaSF co-owner Adam Bergeron and Grand Lake Theatre owner Allen Michaan for a conversation about the future of indie theaters in the Bay Area. \nPlus\, longtime Chronicle movie critic Mick LaSalle celebrates 20 years of answering readers’ burning movie questions with a live edition of his “Ask Mick LaSalle” column alongside Senior Arts and Entertainment Editor Mariecar Mendoza. \nGet your tickets today! \nIf you have questions you’d like Mick to answer\, send them in advance to mlasalle@sfchronicle.com with the subject line: “Manny’s live.” \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nYou’ll hear from: \nLex Sloan: is the executive director at The Roxie Theater in San Francisco and one of the founding members of the Bay Area Media Maker Summit. Lex graduated with an MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University and a BA in Social Change Media from Western Washington University. Sloan is a devoted member of the LGBTQ+ filmmaking community and is committed to ensuring that queer history is preserved and shared through the power of cinema. \nMick LaSalle: Mick LaSalle has been the film critic for The San Francisco Chronicle since 1987. Between 1994 and 1999\, he was the on-air film critic for the ABC-TV affiliate in San Francisco\, KGO. He is the author of Complicated Women: Sex and Power in Pre-Code Hollywood (2000)\, a history/critical study of the actresses who worked during the pre-censorship “pre-Code” era of 1929-1934. Liz Smith called it “a brilliant work” and film historian Scott Eyman called it “a breakthrough work of film scholarship.” That book was followed by Dangerous Men: Pre-Code Hollywood and the Birth of the Modern Man (2002); The Beauty of the Real: What Hollywood Can Learn from Contemporary French Actresses (2012); and Dream State: California in the Movies (2021). He wrote and co-produced the Complicated Women documentary for Turner Classic Movies\, which was narrated by Jane Fonda. He has written introductions to several books\, including The Enduring Star\, Peter Cowie’s biography of Joan Crawford (Rizzoli\, 2009). He was a panelist at the Berlin Film Film Festival in 2009 and has been a regular panelist at the Venice Film Festival since 2006. \nMariecar Mendoza: Mariecar Mendoza is the senior arts and entertainment editor for the San Francisco Chronicle\, overseeing Datebook. Prior to The Chronicle\, Mariecar worked at publications in Southern California\, covering major pop culture moments in the region like Coachella and Comic-Con to the Emmys and Oscars. A Bay Area native\, Mariecar is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association and most recently served as the local chapter’s vice president. \nG. Allen Johnson: G. Allen Johnson has written about film for the Hearst Corporation since 1996\, first for the San Francisco Examiner (1996-2000)\, then The San Francisco Chronicle (2000-present). He previously worked for the Pasadena Star-News and the Indianapolis Star. He was selected as an SF Essential by the San Francisco Film Society in April 2023 for his longtime coverage of the Bay Area film scene. \nAdam Bergeron is the co-owner\, with wife Jamie Holker\, of CinemaSF\, which operates the Balboa\, Vogue and 4-Star theaters in San Francisco and has acquired and is preparing to re-open the Park Theater in Lafayette. Bergeron and Holker also own and operate the Laundromat\, a recently opened restaurant in the Richmond District. \nAllen Michaan is the owner and operator of the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland\, a movie palace built in 1926. He has operated the theater since 1979 and purchased the property in 2018. Michaan has been involved with the cinema business since moving to Berkeley from the East Coast in 1970. Since that time he has operated some two dozen Bay Area theaters. Michaan also owns two other companies: The Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire\, which produces a large outdoor antiques show each month on the old jet runways of Alameda Point; and Michaan’s Auctions\, which holds monthly sales of art and antiques. \nChronicle Live at Manny’s is a monthly series of conversations featuring Chronicle journalists discussing the most pressing issues in the Bay Area and having a little fun along the way. \nPhoto: Carlos Avila Gonzalez / The Chronicle
