SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Thunder over Paris – The Last Penny – Under the Cards
DESCRIPTION:FIVE BY ANDRÉ CAYATTE Before he became known for his socially conscious dramas (and earned the unwarranted derision of the Cahiers du Cinéma)\, André Cayatte gravitated toward film noir\, writing and directing tales of charlatans\, blackmailers and femmes fatales embroiled in complex duplicity. FRENCH ’24 has three of his 1940s excursions into this territory on tap in a matinée triple bill that will reintroduce his early work to audiences.\nThunder Over Paris / Tempête \n12:00 PM In THUNDER OVER PARIS\, an egregious swindler (the redoubtable Erich von Stroheim) is relentlessly tracked by his police detective son-in-law. Needless to say\, it makes for a very unusual family dynamic. (1940\, dir. Dominique Bernard-Deschamps\, 97m)\nThe Last Penny / Le dernier sou \n2:00 PM In THE LAST PENNY the victim of a confidence scheme (Alfred Adam) tries to turn the tables on his blackmailer (Noel Roquevert\, appropriately dastardly) by “turning” his accomplice (the gorgeous Ginette Leclerc\, best remembered for his languorous performance in LE CORBEAU). (1946\, dir. André Cayatte\, 90m)\nUnder the Cards / Le dessous des cartes \n3:45 PM In UNDER THE CARDS\, a scheming wife (Madeleine Sologne\, France’s cross between Veronica Lake and Lizabeth Scott) needs a dupe for a complex deception in order to collect her dead husband’s insurance policy. Enter Serge Reggiani as the unsuspecting Manu—is he ripe to be the patsy who will take the rap? (1948\, dir. André Cayatte\, 94m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Paris\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:40th Anniversary 4K restoration by the Wim Wenders Foundation! \nNew German Cinema pioneer Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire) brings his keen eye for landscape to the American Southwest in Paris\, Texas\, a profoundly moving character study written by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Sam Shepard. Paris\, Texas follows the mysterious\, nearly mute drifter Travis (a magnificent Harry Dean Stanton\, whose face is a landscape all its own) as he tries to reconnect with his young son\, living with his brother (Dean Stockwell) in Los Angeles\, and his missing wife (Nastassja Kinski). From this simple setup\, Wenders and Shepard produce a powerful statement on codes of masculinity and the myth of the American family\, as well as an exquisite visual exploration of a vast\, crumbling world of canyons and neon.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Basquiat
DESCRIPTION:Now in black and white and newly restored! \nNo painter electrified the 1980s art scene like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, a New York street kid whose visionary blending of expressionism\, pop art\, and the radical new aesthetics of hip-hop and graffiti propelled him to international fame before a tragic early demise. Julian Schnabel’s stunning debut charts Basquiat’s dizzying rise and fall with an insider’s eye for authentic details of the downtown arts demimonde as well as a fellow postmodernist’s interest in the dream-like and surreal. Jeffrey Wright’s brilliant introductory performance provides trenchant insight into the artist’s creative passions and personal demons. Cemented by David Bowie as a spot-on Andy Warhol\, Basquiat’s supporting cast is a murderers’ row of Hollywood legends and art lovers (Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\, Parker Posey\, Christopher Walken\, Willem Dafoe) lending their talents to one of the high points of 90s independent cinema\, an intimate elegy for a once-in-a-generation artistic phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Before the Deluge + The Lovers of Verona
DESCRIPTION:More André Cayatte In the 1950s Cayatte transitioned into the cinema’s first “social justice warrior\,” but not before making the Shakespearian film that critics had hoped would emerge from the team of Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert. Taking Carné’s place\, Cayatte gives us an indelible work that honors that legendary duo and even goes a step or two further. A half-decade later\, Cayatte channels his mentor Henri Decoin with a heartfelt variant of the “troubled children ignored by their parents” tale (the Occupation noir STRANGERS IN THE HOUSE) and puts a more expansive spin on it. Taken together\, these films are a shattering but sensitive look at the tragedy that occurs when youth is not cared for by those who should nurture them to maturity.\nBefore the Deluge / Avant le déluge \n6:15 PM Cayatte’s films became darker in the late 40s as he moved inexorably toward the presentation of presing social issues. By 1954\, when he made BEFORE THE FLOOD\, he was heavily invested in the problems of French youth in a volatile\, changing society. Adapting a true story\, Cayatte presents a troubled landscape where the anxiety experienced by young people troubled by the continuing outbreak of war leads them to an ill-considered and ill-fate foray into crime. (1954\, dir. André Cayatte\, 138m)\nThe Lovers of Verona / Les amants de Vérone \n8:55 PM Five years earlier\, Cayatte had teamed with the legendary Jacques Prevert to tell a more expansive\, more romantic\, and more anarchic tale of doomed youth: THE LOVERS OF VERONA chronicles the tragic arc of a modern-day Romeo and Juliet (Serge Reggiani and Anouk Aimee) whose love is threatened by a jealous suitor (a matchless\, manic Pierre Brasseur) and the girl’s anarchic\, desperately corrupt family\, itself reeling in the chaotic world of post-Fascist Italy. FRENCH 5 audiences were especially enraptured by the plight of Anouk Aimée\, making her screen debut at age 18. (1949\, dir. André Cayatte\, 90m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Pulse (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:Part of You Are So Cursed: J-Horror Classics \n“In turn-of-the-21st century Tokyo\, youths are attracted by the promise of connection offered by the explosion of internet access. Yet the downside of this technological shift hits a small group of young coworkers hard when one of their own seems prompted to suicide by strange images he has found online. Soon\, these images are popping up everywhere and death spreads like a virus throughout the city and eventually the world. Kurosawa’s master class in alienated dread spawned a U.S. remake\, but the original remains the best of the internet-horror subgenre and one of the most terrifying movies ever made. “Ultimately\, this is a film about apocalypse\, and Kurosawa replaces the usual auguries of panic and fear with a slow\, creeping realization that the world is being emptied of human life.” – Michael Koresky\, Reverse Shot

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Lilac + They Were Five
DESCRIPTION:EARLY GABIN The young Jean Gabin takes center stage in Sunday’s return to the Big Roxie.\nLilac / Coeur de lilas \n12:30 PM “Street film\,” the policier\, and the “woman in distress” all coalesce in LILAC\, reminding us just what a dynamic filmmaker the young\, pre-Hollywood Anatole Litvak really was. Gabin makes his presence known as an “apache” (the French term for the borderline criminal roughnecks looking for loot and love in the Parisian demimonde)\, but the true tension in the story is between Lilac (the charming but doomed Marcelle Romée\, who would commit suicide in real life just a few months after the film’s premiere) and the police detective (Andre Luguet) who eyes her for the murder of a shady industrialist but who finds his investigation romantically compromised… (1932\, dir. Anatole Litvak\, 90m)\nThere Were Five / La belle équipe \n2:15 PM Fast forward four years and we have Jean Gabin in the early arc of what quickly became a legendary career\, working again with Julien Duvivier (seven collaborations in all between 1935-1956) in an ensemble film about the incompatibilities of friendship and entrepreneurial endeavor. THEY WERE FIVE shows how dreams get corroded by what happens in life: the shimmering guingette that a pentagon of pals (Gabin foremost among them) wish to make into their stake in the world of France’s shimmering but short-lived Popular Front\, the “better society” that would all too soon evaporate. Two endings were shot for the film—we show you the more prophetic (and more noir) downbeat version… (1936\, dir. Julien Duvivier\, 100m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: In the Summers
DESCRIPTION:Siblings Violeta and Eva live in California with their mother\, but every summer they travel to Las Cruces\, New Mexico\, to spend time with their loving but unpredictable father\, Vicente (René “Residente” Pérez Joglar). Over the course of four formative summers that span adolescence to early adulthood\, Violeta and Eva learn to appreciate their father as a person\, his flaws and limitations inseparable from his passion and tenderness. Lovers come and go\, the backyard goes to seed\, but the idea of home remains knotty and elusive. This powerful and deeply personal directorial debut from Alessandra Lacorazza offers a nuanced study of young people questioning their place within their families\, their communities\, and their identities.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Les Misérables
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED IN THREE PARTS: A Storm in a Skull • The Thénardiers • Liberty\, Sweet Liberty\nLes Misérables (1934) \n5:30 PM The novel\, the film\, the musical\, the video game\, the cookware set: everyone knows at a little something about LES MISÉRABLES\, even if no one has seen every adaptation of Victor Hugo’s sprawling tale of the labors of Jean Valjean in nineteenth-century France. Director Raymond Bernard mixes the expressionism of silent film with the tilted angles of film noir\, making his 1934 version of the “ur-noir novel” into a triumphant distillation of the new form of dark cinema that emerged in France in that decade. \nThe great homely “actors’ actor” Harry Baur is Valjean\, carrying the three-part\, four-hour epic on his shoulders\, pursued by the unshakable Javert (Charles Vanel)\, and raising his stepdaughter even as he is continually forced to remain on the run. \nThe superb photography is by Jules Kruger\, one of the key collaborators with Abel Gance on his 1927 silent masterpieces NAPOLEON. You will see the connective tissue between the two works when you surrender yourself to the rarest of all screenings in the FRENCH series—a once-in-a-lifetime experience! (1934\, dir. Raymond Bernard\, 287m). *There will be two intermissions.
