SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Tasting Seminar: Mastering the Wine List - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$90.00\nMember Price:\n$80.00 \nA 90-minute tasting seminar\, served with crackers to cleanse the palate. This class is limited to 24 students and all guests must be at least 21 years of age. See our registration policies here and our rules for in-person events here. \nHave you ever looked at a wine list and wondered\, “Have they always made wine in Slovenia?”\, “Is this the name of the winemaker or the grape?” or “What is an orange wine anyhow?” Or\, just wished you could better express to sommeliers your likes and dislikes so they’d bring you the wine you actually want? \nIf so\, you are not alone. In this class\, wine and cheese expert and former wine bar manager of ten years\, Kirstin Jackson\, will break down the baffling wine list. We’ll dissect a few of the wine lists of the best restaurants in town\, sample some current wine darlings\, learn about popular “somm darlings\,” also known as the the wine trends you’ll see on BTG (by-the-glass) lists\, and discuss how to use a common wine language to order the wines you really want. To illustrate all points\, of course\, we will drink wine. Expect to leave informed\, refreshed\, and able to order like a true wine geek. \nAs there will be a fair amount of wine\, please be sure to have an early dinner or heavy snacks before class. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to participate\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAuthor of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, Kirstin Jackson is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Swimming With Lesbians
DESCRIPTION:Brava Presents\nSwimming With Lesbians \nOctober 6 – 22\, 2023\nFri & Sat at 7:30pm\nSun at 5:00pm \nPREVIEW on Friday\, October 6 \nBrava proudly presents the West Coast Premiere of Marga Gomez’s fourteenth one person show\, Swimming With Lesbians. This full steam farce takes place aboard “The Celesbian\,” regarded as the most notorious cruise ship on the high seas. Throughout the performance Marga morphs into a boatload of hilarious queer characters including: Isabelle a disgraced Lacrosse player yearning for her first Lesbian affair\, Captain Debbie who is always ready to go down in the ship\, and the outwardly jovial but secretly meek bingo caller Pru Perez. Things veer off course when Captain Debbie orders Pru to conduct pool games on the Lezzo Deck. How these intrepid Lesbians navigate through danger\, lust and endless buffets is a seafaring tale that will never be told in Florida. Marga has been subliminally developing Swimming With Lesbians since the 1990’s when she worked as a cruise ship entertainer. \nWritten and Performed by Marga Gomez\nCreative Team: Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe (Black To The Future) Jackie Marchand (Power Rangers) Sarah Toby Moore (Atomic Comic) Monica Palacios (San Francisco Mi Amor) and David Schweizer (Latin Standards.)\nPhotos: Jim McCambridge\nGraphic Design: David Hawkins \nThe show runs 65 minutes with no intermission and is recommended for mature audiences. Full bar will be open for 21 and over.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Jay Siegan Presents Pop Rocks
DESCRIPTION:A Special Evening of 90s and 00s Bangers Live \n$22 Advance and $25 Day of Show \nWebsite | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nPop Rocks is a San Francisco based dance band that grew out of the clubs of San Francisco in the late 90s\, starting as a joke between friends in well-loved original bands. They were playing for Slim’s “One Night Only” event\, and they had so much fun they accidentally turned this into a full-time\, over-the-top uproarious dance band that now travels internationally. They’ve become a go-to band for all kinds of private events and have recently been taken to Germany\, Iceland\, UK\, Fiji\, and more. \nThe band is rooted in anthemic rock hits. You know Journey\, Bon Jovi and 70s rock classics. But they’ve found a deep love for 90s bangers from Sugar Ray\, Spice Girls\, TLC\, Third Eye Blind\, and more. With an eye on retro classics\, this 9-piece band delivers impassioned hits from a shit-hot band of top studio and club musicians in the Bay Area. Completely infectious\, full of joy\, and high impact. This is a band that gives you the night of your life.

SUMMARY:Public Works: AYLI 13-Year Anniversary w/ Sama’ Abdulhadi\, Annika Wolfe + more
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20th\, 9:30pm – 3:00am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nIn addition to online pre-sales\, tickets will be available at the door night of. \nAs You Like It (AYLI) and Public Works invites to celebrate 13-years of community rooted in a shared taste in quality music\, late nights and artistic self-expression. The Bay Area’s vast contributions to dance music culture run deep underground—a family tree rooted in psychedelic rave\, radical funk\, and electronic invention\, steeped in global influences. Beginning in 2010\, AYLI extended this sparkling legacy with a decade of parties dedicated to quality\, intimacy\, and an intensely local glow. \nTimelessness—reflected in AYLI’s beloved influences from Detroit and Chicago to NYC\, Paris\, London\, Tokyo\, and Berlin—as well as diversity\, evidenced by each party’s distinctive lineup\, are the crew’s watchwords\, deployed across an ever-changing techno landscape. Outdoor picnics in Golden Gate Park\, undergrounds in Oakland\, ambitious all-night affairs that brought together some of the most excitingly varied lineups of DJs and performers in Bay Area memory—these were what grew AYLI’s stature as a party powerhouse. \nOver the course of a very busy first 10 years\, AYLI debuted dozens of international and domestic touring artists—Nicolas Jaar\, Ben Klock\, Maya Jane Coles\, Peggy Gou\, and Robert Hood\, among them—while always giving an equal platform to the incredible local talent on offer\, a sophisticated balance that showcased Bay Area excellence and nurtured budding artists’ careers. An As You Like It podcast\, launched in 2011\, connected that local ethos to the global community\, featuring scores of dance music legends while broadening the Bay Area’s influence\, and introducing core AYLI players to the world. \nBut the unity of close family in a fractious time was what grounded AYLI’s essential presence on the scene. Weathering increased anti-nightlife prejudice from the authorities\, a crass tech invasion that out-priced and exiled many local artists\, and the tragic loss of several members and associates in the Ghost Ship Fire\, the AYLI crew and its devoted followers has continued to build a resilient underground movement together. \nIn the shadow of the current pandemic\, AYLI reached out to the world via its collaboration with Fault Radio\, As You Like It Coast-to-Coast\, a virtual party series\, AYLI Radio on Sutrofm.net\, and the launch of the AYLI Ground Level podcast series\, energizing and connecting the community further. \nAYLI Links: \nwww.ayli-sf.com \nwww.ayli.bandcamp.com \nwww.twitter.com/aylisf \nwww.instagram.com/aylisf \nwww.soundcloud.com/as-you-like-it \nwww.discogs.com/label/1940068-As-You-Like-It-Recordings \nMission Statement: \nAs You Like It (AYLI) is the result of a shared taste for quality electronic music\, late-night experiences\, and creative expression\, rooted in the underground and branching out to new heights. \nLINEUP: \nMain Room \nSama’ Abdulhadi \nAnnika Wolfe \nMossmoss \nLoft hosted by Vitamin1000 \nDoctor Jeep \nJIALING \nMars Kasei \nLethargy

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Sustainable Gardening Series: Fall 2023
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Sustainable Gardening Series – Fall 2023 \nOctober 21st\, 28th\, and November 4th – Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. Cost: $30 for the full three-part series\, and receive a $10 gift card at each workshop. Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission \nThe Introduction to Sustainable Gardening series is a three-part workshop series designed to help you transform your yard into a thriving\, sustainable garden. This course will teach you everything you need to know to nurture perennial gardens that conserve water\, provide beauty\, and attract pollinators and beneficial insects. \nSan Francisco is a beautiful and unique city\, with year-round mild temperatures and dry\, foggy summers. Learn what plants are adapted to our coastal climate and grow without the need for toxic pesticides or large amounts of water. This course will focus on native and drought-tolerant ornamental gardens but will cover broad topics that can also apply to vegetable gardening. \nThe full series is $30\, but you will get $10 gift cards to the Urban Farmer Store at each workshop (for a total of $30 in gift cards if you attend the two workshops). \nRegistering will sign you up for the full series of three workshops. Please only register if you plan to attend all three sessions. \nSERIES SUMMARY: \nPart I: Sustainable Garden Design This workshop will teach you how to design a beautiful\, functional\, and thriving home garden space. San Francisco urban gardens come with all sorts of unique challenges (fog\, wind\, steep hillsides\, sandy soil) and it can be difficult to know where to start. Instructor Ellyn will provide information to help you evaluate and design garden spaces and choose plants to match the space\, a principle called “Right Plant\, Right Place”. \nPart II: Water-Wise Gardening This workshop will take a more detailed look at the many beautiful plants that grow well in San Francisco and how you can care for them without using lots of water. Even with San Francisco’s dry and foggy summers\, there is an amazing palate of climate-appropriate plants that will thrive here with little or no summer water so that you can conserve water and save on your bill. Instructor Ellyn will teach you about all of this and also about how to water your plants properly and group them by similar water needs to help them reach their full potential. \nPart III: Organic Pest Control Learn how a healthy and biodiverse garden can thrive without the use of pesticides. Ellyn will discuss the notion that most plant health problems are caused by poor growing conditions or improper planting\, and that pests and diseases may be secondary problems. Plant health care involves a combination of strategies including monitoring\, and you’ll learn strategies to attract beneficial insects\, and keep pests\, diseases\, and weeds at bay naturally. \nInstructor Ellyn Shea is a Bay Area gardener\, garden coach\, Certified Arborist\, consultant\, and educator. She is a longtime Garden for the Environment teacher and supporter and shares her extensive gardening knowledge in this workshop series. \nCOVID-19 information: \n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Sweet & Savory Guide to Soufflés & Choux Pastry - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. \nFully souffles and airy choux pastries seem to magically defy gravity and density. Despite their daunting reputation\, souffles and choux pastry are actually quite simple to make. Our resident French cuisine instructor\, Zoé\, will guide students through the foolproof tips and techniques needed to perfect this light-as-air art! \nAll classic soufflés\, sweet and savory\, start with a base that provides its flavor and structure.

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: ARS MINERVA - Olimpia Vendicata
DESCRIPTION:ARS MINERVA presents Olimpia Vendicata – A Modern World Premiere\nAn Opera composed by Domenico Freschi in 1682 \nThe Plot\nOlimpia Vendicata is Ariadne auf Naxos in a distinctly more 17th-century Italian key. Poor Olimpia\, a Princess of Holland\, is abandoned on a desert island by her faithless lover\, Bireno. Imagine her surprise when Bireno crops up and begins wooing the Hibernian princess Alinda! With finesse and malice\, Olimpia exacts poetic justice. \nCreative Team/Production Staff\nDirector: Céline Ricci\nConductor: Matthew Dirst\nCostumes: Marina Polakoff\nProjections: Entropy\nLights: Del Medoff\nMake up: Daniel Cartagena\nScore transcription: Adam Cockerham\nTranslation: Joe McClinton\nStage Manager: Chase Kupperberg \nCast\nOlimpia: Leslie Katter\nBireno: Nina Jones\nOberto: Deborah Rosengaus\nAlinda: Aura Veruni\nOsmiro: Sara Couden\nAraspe: Nicolas Garcia\nNiso: Sidney Ragland
