SUMMARY:Manny’s: Eric Ries on Why Good Companies Go Bad (and How Yours Doesn't Have To)
DESCRIPTION:Exclusive preview of “Incorruptible\,” the new book from the NYT bestselling author of “The Lean Startup.” \n“Reading it made me so hopeful and excited that I’ve been telling everyone I know about it. This is not just a book for MBAs or people who work in business. It’s for anyone who has wondered\, ‘Is capitalism fixable?’ . . . The book doesn’t encourage a pivot away from profitmaking. Quite the contrary — it argues that if you want your business to do well\, founders and executives should focus on doing good.” —Ari Shapiro\, NPR Host & Author \nEric Ries changed how a generation of founders builds companies. Ideas like MVP\, the pivot\, build-measure-learn came from his 2011 bestseller The Lean Startup. But in the years since\, Eric has been wrestling with a harder question. Why do good companies go bad\, and what can you do to make sure yours doesn’t? \nHis answer is in his new book Incorruptible: Why Good Companies Go Bad…and How Great Companies Stay Great. At its center is a concept he calls “financial gravity\,” the quiet\, compounding pressure that pulls companies away from the missions they started with. \nIn Eric’s conversation with moderator Bob Sutton (Professor Emeritus at Stanford University\, Organizational Psychologist\, and bestselling author)\, Eric will unpack how to architect mission into a company from day one\, the structural mistakes founders make that compound at scale\, and what Lean Startup looks like in the age of AI. This is for founders\, operators\, investors\, and anyone thinking seriously about what it takes to build something that lasts. \nPlease note: Incorruptible will not be available onsite\, but guests who purchase the book option will receive a copy shipped May 26\, along with a signed bookplate from Eric. All attendees are welcome to bring their own copy of The Lean Startup for signing\, or purchase one on-site if a bookseller is present. \n______________________________ \nEric Ries: Over the last two decades\, Eric Ries’s ideas about continuous innovation\, long-term thinking\, governance\, and market reform have reshaped company building and management practices. He is the creator of the Lean Startup method\, and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Lean Startup; The Leader’s Guide; and The Startup Way. \nAs a founder\, he has put his own ideas into practice with The Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE); Answer.AI\, an AI R&D lab; the Lean Startup Co\, which teaches and supports the implementation of Lean Startup; Virgil\, a legal services startup; and IMVU\, where the ideas that became the Lean Startup method were forged. On his podcast\, The Eric Ries Show\, he talks to guests including world-class technologists\, thought leaders\, and executives working to build profitable companies for the long-term benefit of society. Eric has served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Harvard Business School and IDEO. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three children. \n______________________________ \nBob Sutton is a New York Times bestselling author of 8 books including The No Asshole Rule and The Friction Project\, and Professor Emeritus in the Stanford School of Engineering.

SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: Queering Urbanism: Insurgent Spaces in the Fight for Justice
DESCRIPTION:$10 admission; Free for GLBT Historical Society Members \nRSVP and reserve tickets here https://glbthistory.ticketing.veevartapp.com/tickets/view/list/queering-urbanism-insurgent-spaces-in-the-fight-for-justice \nIn this reading and conversation\, architectural historian and author Stathis G. Yeros presents Queering Urbanism: Insurgent Spaces in the Fight for Justice\, a book that rethinks cities through the spatial histories of LGBTQ+ communities. \nDrawing on archival research and community narratives\, the book traces how queer people—often excluded from formal planning and policy—have reshaped urban life during the last fifty years by appropriating of everyday\, generic spaces and building informal networks that inform collective resistance. \nWith case studies from San Francisco’s and Oakland’s rich history of queer placemaking\, the discussion will explore the evolution of the Women’s Building of the Bay Area\, the impact of gentrification on LGBTQ communities of color and low-income residents\, and ongoing struggles to preserve queer spaces as sites of radical possibility rather than commodified nostalgia. How have trans women of color\, sex workers\, queer youth\, and other underrepresented groups created community in hostile urban environments? What can we learn from these histories of resistance as cities continue to change? \nThe evening will feature a reading from the book\, followed by conversation about the past\, present\, and future of LGBTQ urban spaces and the communities that have fought to claim them.

SUMMARY:Paxton Gate: Herpetology Happy Hour 2026: Sips & Slithers
DESCRIPTION:We’re teaming up again with our neighbors at Mission Science Workshop for an evening on the patio with drinks in hand and reptiles within reach. Whether you’ve always wanted to get closer to a snake or you’re still working up to it\, this is a good excuse to try. Our patio will be set up with live animal stations where you can meet some of the scaled locals up close.\nWe’ll have drinks covered too. The classic Margarita is back\, along with a new non-alcoholic aqua fresca for those keeping it cold-blooded in a different way. Not ready to handle a snake? Swing by the Bone Puzzle Challenge\, piece together a skeleton\, and earn a prize from the MSW team for completing it. \nBest of all\, it’s completely free to attend. Donations to Mission Science Workshop are enthusiastically encouraged when getting a photo with our reptilian friends and Paxton Gate will be matching every dollar given during the event. MSW is a vital community pillar\, providing hands-on science enrichment to over 12\,000 students across San Francisco. Come for the snakes\, stay for the science\, and help fuel the next generation of Bay Area tinkerers and explorers. \nNo registration required \nAll ages welcome\nRSVP https://dothebay.com/events/2026/5/8/herpetology-happy-hour-sips-slithers-tickets

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Good Modeling Picture!! Curated by Molly Soda
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area presents a special night of artist-made films\, selected by internet artist performer Molly Soda. Soda will be present to introduce the films\, and afterwards will participate in a Q&A moderated by Gray Area Associate Curator Wade Wallerstein. \nBringing together a diverse group of artists\, Good Modeling Picture!! offers a variety of perspectives on digital culture over the last 25 years. More specifically\, the selected films explore fame and fandom\, self and other\, and the power dynamics of perception in screen-mediated spaces. Livestream gifting culture\, online encounters with strangers\, and digital photography from Y2K-era party circuits are just a few of the techno-social phenomena through which these films offer insight into modern identity formation and self-perception.

The book proposes that every American deserves a strong floor—built on access to education\, healthcare\, housing\, jobs\, capital\, and justice—while insisting there should be no ceiling on success for those who work hard\, pay taxes\, and play by the rules. Across more than 50 policy proposals spanning healthcare\, the economy\, immigration\, national security\, science\, and more\, Author Oliver Libby makes the case for a unifying vision that speaks to the frustrated majority of Americans who feel caught between the extremes. \nThe book’s message has caught fire in Democratic politics\, as well as among centrists and independents\, and media across the country. The “Strong Floor\, No Ceiling” slogan is now being used by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries\, Senator Chris Coons\, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand\, Rep. Mike Levin\, Rep. Eugene Vindman\, Gov. JB Pritzker\, and many others. Recent battleground polling across a dozen states shows large majorities of voters support the framework\, and voters are significantly more likely to support candidates who embrace this message. \nJoin us for this exciting evening to hear from Libby on the rising influence of this slogan and the power it has on the future of the Democratic Party. And purchase your copy in advance here through Eventbrite and get it signed day-of by Libby himself!
