SUMMARY:Manny’s: Menergy: The Sound of Gay Liberation in San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Menergy tells the story of the “postdisco” recording industry in San Francisco between 1978 and 1984. For most of America\, disco died in 1979. Gay people\, however\, continued to dance\, and in the Castro enterprising gay DJs\, record producers\, and musicians started their own small dance music record labels to make up for the lack of new\, danceable music.\nThe sound derived its aesthetic from San Francisco’s unique queer configuration of elements\, but immediately this music had a reach far beyond the Bay Area\, with Megatone Records\, Moby Dick Records\, and other labels achieving worldwide success with San Francisco artists such as Sylvester\, Patrick Cowley\, Lisa\, and Boys Town Gang creating the world’s first gay-owned\, gay-produced music for a dancing audience.\nBring your dancing shoes and join us for this fabulous conversation! Get in the mood with the Menergy! A Gay San Francisco Sound Playlist.\nManny’s never turns away people due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the word “grapefruit” and the title of the event to angelina@welcometomannys.com.\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLouis Niebur is Professor of Musicology at the University of Nevada\, Reno. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California\, Los Angeles. His research areas include the significance of music to LGBTQ communities as it has shifted between live music\, the jukebox\, and the disc jockey in the context of queer spaces. He has delivered and published papers on such topics as San Francisco’s proto-queercore scene\, the history of Camp Records and other gay recording labels of the 1960s\, and the queer function of electronic sound production in electronic dance music. His most recent book\, Menergy: San Francisco’s Gay Disco Sound (Oxford University Press\, 2022)\, traces the way disco and high energy dance music channeled the spirit of gay liberation through a shared dancefloor experience.

SUMMARY:Dance Mission Theater: CubaCaribe Festival Festival of Dance & Music: Reunión/Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-17th-annual-cubacaribe-festival-of-dance-music-reuniongathering-tickets-485647533847\nA mixed program with performances by: Alafia Dance Ensemble\, Los Lupeños de San José\, Agua Doce Dance\, Cuicacalli\, Embodiment Project\, La Unión Matancera\, Batey Tambó\nSeven local and visiting dance companies will create original choreography rooted in the Caribbean and its Diaspora based on the curatorial vision. Gathering is either a noun or a verb\, something we do or is done. After the last few years in a global pandemic\, we recognize the importance of physically coming together. The isolation and reuniting after has taken many forms. We will reflect on our individual and shared experiences and resilience. Dance\, music and art proved more important than ever; they enabled a way to communally gather\, to be a part of something larger than ourselves and to share\, a way to express emotional struggles and joys and serves as freedom for individuals\, cultures and communities. This is true now and has been true throughout history.

It’s modern day Japanese animation at its best.”Kevin Williams\, Chicago Tribune \nBased loosely on the life and work of Ozu muse Hara Setsuko\, Satoshi Kon’s stunning sophomore feature is a kaleidoscopic\, time-skipping portrait of a reclusive actor looking back on her career. The clever meta-movie follows a two-man documentary crew as they set about interviewing Fujiwara Chiyoko\, a former studio star who withdrew from public life after retiring decades earlier. Her story transports the pair through a century of Japanese cinema and history\, as past and present\, memories and movie roles\, start to blur. Kon co-wrote the script with Perfect Blue screenwriter Murai Sadayuki; as in that film\, the boundaries between inner and outer realities are erased—albeit here in a more fanciful\, less maniacal manner! Musician Hirasawa Susumu\, long admired by Kon\, wrote the electronic score. The film garnered much acclaim and shared (with Miyazaki’s Spirited Away) the prestigious Japan Media Arts prize for animation. \nMILLENNIUM ACTRESS also plays on Monday\, April 10 with PERFECT BLUE . See both for $17 or either for $14. Details here.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Good Morning (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:Ozu’s hilarious Technicolor reworking of his silent I Was Born\, But . . . \, Good Morning (Ohayô) is the story of two young boys in suburban Tokyo who take a vow of silence after their parents refuse to buy them a television set. Shot from the perspective of the petulant brothers\, Good Morning is an enchantingly satirical portrait of family life that gives rise to gags about romance\, gossip\, and the consumerism of modern Japan.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Tokyo Story
DESCRIPTION:A profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak\, Tokyo Story is the crowning achievement of the unparalleled Yasujiro Ozu. The film\, which follows an aging couple’s journey to visit their grown children in bustling postwar Tokyo\, surveys the rich and complex world of family life with the director’s customary delicacy and incisive perspective on social mores. Featuring lovely performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara\, Tokyo Story plumbs and deepens the director’s recurring theme of generational conflict\, creating what is without question one of cinema’s mightiest masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Salt of This Sea
DESCRIPTION:The Arab Film and Media Institute presents the 3rd Annual Arab Women in the Arts Showcase \nSoraya\, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees\, discovers that her grandfather’s savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Stubborn\, passionate and determined to reclaim what is hers\, she fulfills her life-long dream of “returning” to Palestine. Slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own internal anger. She meets Emad\, a young Palestinian whose ambition\, contrary to hers\, is to leave forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives\, they know in order to be free\, they must take things into their own hands\, even if it’s illegal. \nAbout the filmmaker: Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir has been working in independent film since 1994 and has written\, directed and produced a number of short films including A post Oslo history (1998)\, The satellite shooters (2001) and Like twenty impossibles (2003). She works as a freelance editor and cinematographer and also teaches. Salt of this Sea is her first feature film\, then she directed When I saw you. Wajib is her third feature film. \nAbout AFMI: The Arab Film and Media Institute is the first organization of its kind outside the Arab world\, a unique ecosystem to find\, nurture and develop Arab film and media projects. It was rebranded from the Arab Film Festival in 2017 to fulfill its broader mandate to empower local Arab talent to tell their communities’ stories in their own voices. Through film\, education\, mentorship\, and new media\, AFMI’s mission is to enhance public understanding of Arab culture and provide insight into the beauty\, complexity and diversity intrinsic to the Arab world. SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Grains - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Grains teaches an array of preparation techniques\, based around the wildly popular world of grains. We will whip up two complete meals in a bowl\, so you will leave happy and full of warmth and new knowledge! \nFirst we’ll go back to the early days – the way-early days\, when humans first began to stop hunting and gathering\, and settled down to farm. We’ll craft a hearty bowl of farro\, full of the earthy meatiness of wild mushrooms. We will discuss dried vs. fresh mushrooms\, and cook up a saute pan full of them. Add in the year-long availability of butternut squash\, and deal with prepping this amazingly bright but awkward squash. Our bowl of ancient goodness will finish off with the bite of mustard greens\, while we learn to prep these nutrition-bombs and add their flavor to perk up all of our cooking. \nFor our second dish\, we will dive into the world of spice. We will bloom some garlic\, ginger\, and curry powder\, igniting their flavors as we saute them in oil. While the aromas rise\, we will delve into spices and what makes them so valuable in our cooking. Then on to the star of our second dish\, quinoa as we cook it up lump free and tender. Add in the vegetable-meatiness of chickpeas – we will even discuss aquafaba and its culinary and cocktail uses as we pop the cans – and finish off with not-slimy eggplant and the sweet/sour pairing of dried fruit and creme fraiche. Throw in a side discussion of crafting creme fraiche at home\, just to save on your culinary dollars\, and our brief tour of the completely vegetarian wonderland of grains will come to an end. \nMENU \nFarro with Wild Mushrooms\, Butternut Squash\, and Mustard Greens \nCurried Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Chickpeas\, Eggplant\, Raisins\, and Creme Fraiche \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: wheat\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Little Richard: I Am Everything
DESCRIPTION:Director Lisa Cortés’ Sundance opening night documentary LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll\, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world\, the film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family\, musicians\, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars\, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression\, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life\, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God\, sex and rock n’ roll. The world tried to put him in a box\, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes – he was unabashedly everything.
