SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Chungking Express
DESCRIPTION:The whiplash\, double-pronged “Chungking Express” is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai an instant icon. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung)\, both jilted by ex-lovers\, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand\, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Faye Wong) works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer\, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing. This recent 4K digital restoration was undertaken from the 35mm original camera negative by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata\, Jet Tone\, One Cool\, and 3H Sound Studio. It was supervised and approved by Wong Kar Wai.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Tumultes + Justin de Marseille
DESCRIPTION:Before/After Hollywood: Siodmak/Tourneur: two very different criminals are showcased in the first of two days of “film club” programming in the Little Roxie.\nTumultes \n6:45 PM Robert Siodmak\, moving to France from Germany before becoming the “master of film noir” in Hollywood\, brings us the choleric\, disgruntled Ralph Schwarz (Charles Boyer)\, an impulsive man who is his own worst enemy. Jealousy and paranoia envelop him as he tries to put his life back together after being released from prison. In TUMULTES\, Boyer indelibly captures film noir’s first unredeemable hero. (1932\, dir. Robert Siodmak\, 92m)\nJustin de Marseille \n8:30 PM It’s followed by a totally different type of criminal\, as Maurice Tourneur (father of Jacques) chronicles the colorful gangster world at France’s southern port city in JUSTIN DE MARSEILLE. His flamboyant hero (a dynamic Antonin Berval) is embroiled in turf wars\, complicated love affairs\, and escalating danger—it’s a gangster film whose Gallic flair gives it a panache that is absent from its American counterparts. (1935\, dir. Maurice Tourneur\, 95m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Audition
DESCRIPTION:Part of You Are So Cursed: J-Horror Classics \nOne of the most infamous\, impactful\, and gut-wrenching Japanese horror films ever made returns to the big screen! Recent widower (and movie producer) Shigeharu is looking for a new wife. But instead of going the usual route\, he decides to hold “auditions” for a movie that doesn’t exist. Shigeharu quickly becomes enchanted with Asami\, a spooky twenty-something who is responsive to his charms. But things aren’t what they seem. AUDITION was the turn-of-the-millenium flash point that signaled the talent of Takashi Miike (ICHI THE KILLER). With this movie\, Miike delivers a nerve-shredding exploration of male fears and the stereotype of submissive Japanese women. Shocking audiences worldwide with its white-knuckle finale and ingenious slow-burn build-up\, AUDITION was responsible for creating a fresh new wave of Asian horror. And we’re eternally grateful.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: In the Summers
DESCRIPTION:Siblings Violeta and Eva live in California with their mother\, but every summer they travel to Las Cruces\, New Mexico\, to spend time with their loving but unpredictable father\, Vicente (René “Residente” Pérez Joglar). Over the course of four formative summers that span adolescence to early adulthood\, Violeta and Eva learn to appreciate their father as a person\, his flaws and limitations inseparable from his passion and tenderness. Lovers come and go\, the backyard goes to seed\, but the idea of home remains knotty and elusive. This powerful and deeply personal directorial debut from Alessandra Lacorazza offers a nuanced study of young people questioning their place within their families\, their communities\, and their identities.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Love Is My Profession + The Snow Was Black
DESCRIPTION:Best known for his Inspector Maigret policiers\, the incredibly prolific Georges Simenon was more daring and perverse in his romans durs—nearly one hundred psychological novels that more directly exposed the dark underside of humanity. FRENCH 24 kicks off with two of his best…\nLove Is My Profession / En cas de malheur \n6:30 PM First\, when a noted barrister (Jean Gabin) decides to defend a comely shoplifter (Brigitte Bardot)\, the stage is set for a scandalous May-December affair that upends the lawyer’s marriage and kindles a dangerously intense reaction from the girl’s estranged boyfriend. Director Claude-Autant Lara keeps the love story and its escalating impact in sharp focus as the story moves inexorably toward an incendiary conclusion. LOVE IS PROFESSION was a sensation when it was screened at FRENCH 1 in 2014—this might be your last chance to see it on a big screen for quite some time… (1958\, dir. Claude Autant-Lara\, 122m)\nThe Snow Was Black / La Neige était sale \n8:55 PM It’s followed by the bleak tale of the doomed-from-birth Frank (Daniel Gélin in an icy\, haunted performance)\, a young Frenchman drawn into a life of nihilistic debauchery by a series of macabre circumstances. Expatriate Argentine director Luis Saslavsky is unsparing in his presentation of a young man slowly turned monstrous by his strange upbringing. THE SNOW WAS BLACK was a favorite of Tom Luddy\, the long-time mastermind of the Telluride Film Festival. (1954\, dir. Luis Saslavsky\, 110m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Time Masters
DESCRIPTION:Restored in 4K in 2023 at the initiative of CITE FILMS in collaboration with the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and with the support of the CNC \nDirected by visionary science-fiction animator René Laloux (Fantastic Planet) and designed by the legendary Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Mœbius) The Time Masters is a visually fantastic foray into existentialist space adventure. After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet Perdide\, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) survives by maintaining radio contact with Jaffar (Jean Valmont)\, a pilot transporting the exiled Prince Matton (Yves-Marie Maurin) and Princess Belle (Monique Thierry) from their former kingdom. Jaffar seeks the help of Silbad (Michel Elias)\, a cheerful old-timer who knows how to circumvent Perdide’s hazards\, including brain-devouring insects and watery graves. Along the way\, Jaffar and company encounter a pair of impish homunculi stowaways\, identity-less angels controlled by an amorphous hive mind\, and the Masters of Time\, mysterious beings who can bend reality and perhaps reveal to the heroes their secret origins and destinies. Based on the 1958 science fiction novel L’Orphelin de Perdide (The Orphan of Perdide) by Stefan Wul. \nBased on the French novel L’Orphelin de Perdide written by Stefan Wul. Bring your copy of the book at any of the screenings of The Time Masters and get a free small popcorn! \nThe Time Masters kicks off our ongoing animation series Page to Frame: Animated Adaptations Abound.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Eno
DESCRIPTION:VERY LIKELY THE LAST 7 UNIQUE VERSIONS: 9/27 – 10/2!\nCo-Present by KEXP! \nGROUNDBREAKING. Remixes the music doc.”– David Fear\, Rolling Stone\n“Revolutionary”- Screen Daily\n“A template for how cinema can be re-defined in the digital age.”– The Quietus\n“Remarkable”- Forbes \nVisionary musician and artist Brian Eno — known for producing David Bowie\, U2\, Talking Heads\, among many others; pioneering the genre of ambient music; and releasing more than 40 solo and collaboration albums — reveals his creative processes in the groundbreaking generative documentary ENO: a film that’s different every time it’s shown. \nAcclaimed filmmaker Gary Hustwit (HELVETICA\, RAMS) set out to decode Eno’s creative strategies and examine his lifelong search for the meaning of music in the first career-spanning documentary of the legendary and prolific artist. \nInstead of a by-the-numbers bio-doc\, Hustwit and his collaborators invented an approach befitting the iconoclast’s use of new technologies. ENO is the world’s first generative cinematic documentary and\, like a musical performance that’s different every night\, ENO creates a unique viewing experience for each audience. Utilizing a proprietary software system developed by Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes\, the film has millions of possible variations of scenes and footage drawn from Hustwit’s original interviews and Eno’s rich archive of hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage and unreleased music. \nThe result is a film that resonates with Eno’s own artistic practice\, his methods of using technology to compose music\, and his endless deep dive into the mercurial essence of creativity. \nEach day will feature a different version of the film\, with a running time that varies between 85-90 mins. \n“A documentary that mirrors the spirit of Eno’s music in its very form. ENO is sleek\, seamless\, and compelling… The documentary uses [Eno’s] observations to fuse his past and present\, his evolving images and shifting roles\, in a way that accentuates their musical and spiritual continuity…There has long been an aura of enigma surrounding Brian Eno\, and one of the film’s delights is that he turns out to be a brainy but also quite funny and grounded middle-class British chap who has great stories to tell.” – Owen Gleiberman\, Variety \n“A perfect blend of form and content…It may be simply called ENO but there’s nothing simple about Gary Hustwit’s experimental film\, a documentary that generates itself anew every time it screens… Brian Eno is a genius who was unencumbered by traditional music production. Why make a traditional documentary about him?” – Brian Tallerico\, RogerEbert.com \n“A clever documentary shaped by [Eno’s] own innovations… The one constant—and what makes the movie worth seeing—is the man himself. Charming\, smart\, sensitive\, genial\, and exuding an almost childlike passion for and profound (though never pretentious) questioning of the musical art-form\, Eno makes for great company.” – Anthony Kaufman\, Screen Daily

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Unlocking Umami: Miso & Koji
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$185.00\nMember Price:\n$175.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 14 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. \nWelcome to the Unlocking Umami series! In each of these classes (Mushrooms\, Miso & Koji)\, we delve into the fifth taste through a curated selection of recipes and ingredient tastings designed to deepen your understanding of umami. You’ll learn methods to maximize and enhance umami flavors and discover umami’s relationship with the other four tastes. \nMiso is a magic wand. Its umami-rich\, salty profile plays well in both savory and sweet dishes. While miso is most often associated with Japanese-style broth\, its versatility extends far beyond. The secret behind miso’s magic is koji\, a grain\, usually rice\, inoculated with the fungus Aspergillus oryzae\, traditionally used to make sake\, shoyu\, and\, of course\, miso. \nInspired by students who wonder what to do with a big container of miso after making soup\, Marie developed this class to inspire you to use miso in non-traditional ways. Get ready to have your mind blown with an impossibly simple and staggeringly delicious recipe for roasted vegetables. Turn a beloved childhood treat into a sophisticated and nuanced bite. And while Marie would never suggest that you use only one salad dressing recipe (heaven forbid!)\, she does feel confident that this one will grace your table frequently. \nWhile the focus of this class is on miso and koji\, we will also explore and taste other vegan and vegetarian umami-rich ingredients\, further broadening your umami repertoire. \nMENU \nUmami Popcorn (Recipe Only) \nMiso Bagna Cauda \nUltimate\, All-Star\, Blue Ribbon Winning Roasted Vegetables with Chickpeas and Fresh Herbs \nTomato Miso and Scallion Gratin \nSalad with One Salad Dressing to Rule Them All \nUpgraded Childhood Peanut Butter Cups \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Soy\, Peanuts\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together!

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: SUSPIRIA (1977)
DESCRIPTION:A fairy tale construction at once grim and florid\, Argento’s best-known film finds Jessica Harper’s American ballet dancer arriving at an exclusive academy in Germany where she discovers a dark past and occult forces at work in the present. With some of Argento’s most perversely ingenious set pieces\, a plum part for former Fritz Lang muse Joan Bennett\, and a spine-tingling theme by Goblin that will haunt you to the grave.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Basquiat
DESCRIPTION:Now in black and white and newly restored! \nNo painter electrified the 1980s art scene like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, a New York street kid whose visionary blending of expressionism\, pop art\, and the radical new aesthetics of hip-hop and graffiti propelled him to international fame before a tragic early demise. Julian Schnabel’s stunning debut charts Basquiat’s dizzying rise and fall with an insider’s eye for authentic details of the downtown arts demimonde as well as a fellow postmodernist’s interest in the dream-like and surreal. Jeffrey Wright’s brilliant introductory performance provides trenchant insight into the artist’s creative passions and personal demons. Cemented by David Bowie as a spot-on Andy Warhol\, Basquiat’s supporting cast is a murderers’ row of Hollywood legends and art lovers (Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\, Parker Posey\, Christopher Walken\, Willem Dafoe) lending their talents to one of the high points of 90s independent cinema\, an intimate elegy for a once-in-a-generation artistic phenomenon.
