SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Short and Sweet: New Summer Food - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$75.00\nMember Price:\n$65.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \n“Summertime\, and the living is easy…” but still the difficult question remains: “What is for dinner tonight?” \nCome down to 18 Reasons for a couple of hours on a Tuesday night\, and we will learn a bunch of new approaches to food. Starting with a perfect cold melon soup\, finished last minute with a dash of sparkling wine\, and sparked with a brilliant pile of summer vegetable pickles. Then a wonderful entree\, celebrating the best of the season: good old fashioned ratatouille\, done as a traybake of roasted vegetables and piled in a rainbow of colors and flavors on a swoosh of whipped feta cheese. For dessert\, we look to our family at Bi-RIte Creamery for their amazing vanilla ice cream\, on top of which we will pile rosemary-perfumed roasted peaches and fragrant toasted almonds. \nMENU \nCold Melon and Sparkling Wine Soup with Quick Pickles \nTraybake of Eggplant\, Tomatoes\, and Peppers on Whipped Feta Cheese \nRoasted Rosemary Peaches with Almonds on BiRite Vanilla Ice Cream \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: tree nuts\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

Additionally\, He has written\, directed\, produced\, and starred in short films for HBO and had quite an adventure through the world of late-night television. He has created content for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN and can be seen in the Netflix feature film Unleashed alongside stars from Showtime’s Shameless. Reed shared an excerpt story from the aforementioned East 14th – on NPR/WYNC’s Snap Judgment so compelling that it was woven into the graduate writing curriculum at American University in D.C. See it here…“I Miss Toni” \nDon has recently been a contributing special assignment writer for The San Francisco Examiner and has partnered with Virtual Bodyworks – a leading virtual reality entity making huge strides in the world of workplace Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. Reed asks that you support Elevate Oakland\, a foundation bound to keeping music and the arts alive in Oakland Public Schools\, MercyHouse.net to help the unhoused\, and MISSSEY.org to impact the challenges of sexually exploited youth. \nPat Hazell – Showtime declared Pat Hazell one of the five funniest people in America. His 30 years of experience as a writer\, producer\, and director have made him a go-to-guy for new American Theater. Pat is an original writer for NBC’s Seinfeld\, a Tonight Show veteran\, a critically acclaimed playwright and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio. He is recognized for his genuinely funny Americana humor and his salute to nostalgia. Pat is the creator and host of the weekly podcast Creativity in Captivity available on all platforms. \nAs a playwright\, Pat’s first endeavor Bunk Bed Brothers was optioned by Columbia Pictures\, then gained the attention of the TV industry and was filmed as the sit-com\, American Pie\, for NBC. Hazell’s signature work\, The Wonder Bread Years\, a grand salute to the baby-boomer generation\, aired on PBS where they referred to Hazell as “America’s Foremost Pop Culture Anthropologist.” \nAs the Chief Creative Officer of Sweetwood Creative\, he is responsible for the creation of eight original productions: Pat Hazell’s Permanent Record\, The Wonder Bread Years\, The Good Humor Men\, Bunk Bed Brothers\, My Funny Valentine\, My Life in 3D\, A Kodachrome Christmas and Grounded For Life:The Musical. Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:Little Mission Studio: July Studio Classes
DESCRIPTION:Current LMS Private Lesson Students\, save the date for our next Studio Classes! \nJuly Studio Classes: Sunday\, July 16th\, 2023 \n Kids Studio Class A (Ages 4 – 8): 11:00 – 11:45 AM\n Kids Studio Class B (Ages 9+): 11:45 AM – 12:45 AM\n Adult Studio Class: 12:45 – 2:15 PM \nFor current LMS Private Lesson Students only.\nSo what’s a studio class?? \nThink of it like a big open group lesson. A technique used often in music conservatories\, studio classes are gatherings where students perform for each other\, receive positive and constructive feedback from our faculty and other students\, and have the opportunity to meet and work with their fellow students.\nLike a recital? \nNot quite\, the format and structure of a studio class is much more relaxed than a recital (which we will have later on!). It’s expected that the piece a student performs during studio class is a work in progress. Nothing is expected to be perfect\, but it should be a piece the student has been working on for a bit.\nDo I need to sign up or register for Studio Classes? \nNo\, no need to register or sign-up. Studio Classes are open to all current Private Lesson students\, and you can just arrive at the date & time for your age group.\nWhat should I play? \nAny piece you’re currently working on or even have learned in the past is fair game for Studio Class! For longer pieces\, you could even just focus on a movement or smaller section.\nWill everyone play? \nYes! All current LMS Private Lesson Students are expected to attend and present a work-in-progress at each Studio Class. If it’s your very first time to a Studio Class ever\, and you’re feeling a bit stage-shy\, please discuss with your instructor and you can participate as a listener at your first class to see how everything works. 🙂\nWhat’s the purpose of a studio class? \nThere are many reasons we’ll be running regular studio classes: \n Students get to meet and see other students! Often private lesson students are isolated during their lessons\, and this is a great way to grow and nurture our music-making community at Little Mission Studio!\n Students get to listen to live music! Listening and learning to evaluate musical performance are skills just as important as playing and reading music. And Studio Class incorporates all Little Mission Studio students across disciplines\, so piano students can listen to vocalists\, or guitarists can listen to violinists!\n Students get to perform! The style of studio classes is relaxed and supportive\, meaning students get to practice performing; again a skill important in learning music.\n Shared knowledge results in better learning! Maybe you’ll hear a piece you’ve played before\, and you’ll definitely learn something new about it. \nSo what’s the cost? \nNo additional cost! These regular studio classes are included in your regular lesson tuition!\nCan parents or friends attend Studio Class? \nNo. Parents\, family\, or friends should not attend Studio Classes. There will be the time and occasion for you or your child to truly perform when we have recitals. Studio Classes are more about meeting and learning from fellow students without the added pressure of having to impress family or friends. \nSo save the dates and let your instructor know if you have any questions!

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Summer Sourdough Galettes: Sweet & Savory - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nMarie’s popular class series is getting an update: a sourdough crust! \nPie crusts can be intimidating. The threat of mushy\, under-cooked undersides and the fear of rolling out concentric dough has kept many people from trying their hand at this pastry classic. Enter the galette. Galettes have all the flavor of pies but are far more low key. No blind baking and no tedious crust crimping. They are the pastry equivalent of the dinner guest who always knows what to say and gets along with everyone. \nBoth galettes feature tantalizing flavor pairings that elevate the final products to be more than the sum of their parts. Tomatoes and basil are a mainstay classic but have you tried the trio of blackberries\, peaches and ginger? Your palate is in for a treat. Join us as we learn how to make beautiful and flaky crusts while saluting the season with fillings that feature the produce of late summer. \nBonus: You are welcome to bring in your own container and take home some of Marie’s sourdough starter. \nMENU \nBasic Sourdough Galette Dough \nTomato & Fresh Basil Pesto Galette \nRoasted Tomatillo\, Chile & Cotija Galette \nBlackberry\, Ginger & Peach Galette\, served with Bi-Rite Creamery Vanilla Ice Cream \nSeasonal Salad \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Egg\, Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. SUMMARY:Public Works: Dam Swindle + Joe Fro b2b Iwata presented by PW
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 14th\, 9pm – 3am \nMain Room / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nTickets will be available at the door night of. \nLINEUP: \nMain Room \n➩ Dam Swindle \n➩ Joe Fro b2b Iwata \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nDAM SWINDLE BIO: \nIt was in 2011 that Dutch pair Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets quickly broke through in the electronic music scene. Since then they have become known for their widescreen approach to making and playing club ready grooves. From deep to disco\, tech to soul\, they join the dots between the past and the present with their own sense of storytelling and do so in clubs around the world\, as well as in their own studio. House might be the root of the Dam Swindle sound\, but it takes nourishment from a much wider world of music. \nIt was their early\, high impact tunes such as ‘The Wrap Around’ and ‘The Break Up’\, that got dancers allover the world in a frenzy. Since then\, the pair has constantly evolved and matured and continued to draw on all musical niches. Building bridges between them\, their landmark 2018 album High Life or their‘Coffee in the Morning EP’ both furthered their take on house music with a real sense of timelessness and class. \nSince 2013\, the pair has also established their own Heist Recordings as a well respected label that is home to the majority of their own originals\, though other underground mainstays such as Aus Music and Classic Music Company have also come calling. Heist is more than just a label\, though-it is a breeding ground for talents oldand new; somewhere talent is nurtured and allowed to develop. Label showcases and special projects such as the yearly Roundup EP; where all artists from the past 12 months remix each other after a random selection process\, furthers the family vibe and helps Heist stand out from crowd. Artists such as Nebraska\,Orlando Voorn\, Kassian\, Demuir\, Makèz\, Max Graef\, Adryiano\, Pépé Bradock\, Nachtbraker\, Matthew Herbert\, Ge-Ology\, Byron the Aquarius and many more have all contributed\, proving that it is a place for unrestrained creatives to be free with their own sonic visions. Thelabel looks as good as it sounds\, too\, thanks to visual artist Bas Koopmans’s standout artwork designs. \nProof of DamSwindle’s widescreen approach to production is their long and talented list of collaborators\,which includes the likes of acclaimed musician\, Eric Clapton and John Mayer collaborator and Blue Note artist Tom Misch\, US talent Seven Davis Jr.\, instrumental collective Jungle by Night\, plus Marc de Clive-Lowe\, Jitwam and Lorenz Rhode. Next to their own originals\, a broad spectrum of artists have asked DamSwindle for some of their special remix magic: on labels like Strut and Soundway they havereworked the legendary Pat Thomas\, aka the ‘Golden voice of Africa\,’ and gave hissingle ‘Yamona’ acontemporary electronic edge\, as well as The Mauskovic Dance Band’s track ‘Space Drum Machine’ andplenty more artists like Kerri Chandler\, Mayer Hawthorne\, Tom Misch and Dave Lee’s Sunburst Band. As their talent for bridging genres from all over the world continues to attract global attention\, high profile projects keep rolling in from all points on the musical globe. \nDam Swindle are famously avid collectors of both old and new records\, and it shows in their DJ sets\, which keep you on your toes as they move freely and skillfully through different times\, places and sounds. Rather than limiting themselves to a certain feeling or mood\, Detroit Swindle can call on classic house\, obscure disco\, African funk\, soulful techno and plenty in between\, all with the aim of making those special moments that crowds never forget. It is for that reason that their name has become a real stamp of authority and invention in the dance music world. Whatever they do\, then\, this pair do with irresistible charm. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support. You’ll receive about 4 messages per month\, message and data rates may apply\, and you can text STOP to cancel at any time.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Summer of Learning: Sculpting a Life: Chana Orloff between Paris & Tel Aviv
DESCRIPTION:Have you been missing the classroom lately? \nCraving a good old fashion mind stimulating lecture from your favorite professor? \nIt may be summer\, but that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop! \nIn Sculpting a Life\, the first book-length biography of sculptor Chana Orloff (1888-1968)\, author Paula Birnbaum tells the amazing story of a fiercely determined and ambitious woman who fled antisemitism in Ukraine\, emigrated to Palestine with her family\, then travelled to Paris to work in haute couture before becoming an internationally recognized artist. Against the resonant backdrop of revolution\, world wars\, a global pandemic and forced migrations\, her sculptures embody themes of gender\, displacement\, exile\, and belonging. A major figure in the School of Paris\, Orloff contributed to the canon of modern art alongside Picasso\, Modigliani and Chagall. \nStories from her unpublished memoir enrich this life story of courage\, perseverance\, and extraordinary artistic accomplishments that take us through the aftermath of the Holocaust when Orloff lived between Paris and Tel Aviv. This biography brings new perspectives and understandings to Orloff’s multiple identities as a cosmopolitan émigré\, woman\, and Jew\, and is a much-needed intervention into the narrative of modern art. (162 words) \nWe will be joined by the amazing Professor Birnbaum from University of San Francisco! \nAbout Professor Birnbaum: \nPaula Birnbaum is the Ann Getty Endowed Chair and Professor of Arts History and Museum Studies\, and serves as Academic Director of the Museum Studies M.A. Program at the University of San Francisco. She is a specialist in modern and contemporary art and holds a doctorate in Art History from Bryn Mawr College. Professor Birnbaum is a former Fulbright Scholar and fellow at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University. \nBirnbaum has completed three books: Sculpting a Life: Chana Orloff Between Paris and Tel Aviv (Brandeis University Press\, 2023); Women Artists in Interwar France: Framing Femininities (Ashgate/Routledge\, 2011; 2016)\, and a co-edited anthology (with Anna Novakov)\, Essays on Women’s Artistic and Cultural Contributions 1919-1939 (Edwin Mellen). Her publications contribute to feminist scholarship within the fields of art history\, museum studies\, and Jewish studies\, with recent articles on topics including contemporary feminist art in Israel and the global street art movement. She has published essays on feminist art in numerous recent exhibition catalogs and lectured internationally\, with recent presentations at the University of Johannesburg\, the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume\, Paris\, Tel Aviv University\, and the 34th World Congress of Art History\, Beijing. Birnbaum is the recipient of the Hadassah Brandeis Institute Research Award (2017)\, and the University of San Francisco’s Distinguished Research Award (2014) and Distinguished Teaching Award (2008).

SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: Curve Magazine Cartoons: A Dyke Strippers' Retrospective (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the launch of a new exhibition\, “Curve Magazine Cartoons: A Dyke Strippers’ Retrospective.” The program will include remarks from curator Julia Rosenzweig and light refreshments. This exhibition will include pieces from the archives of Curve magazine and the GLBT Historical Society. \nThe landscape of lesbian cartoons in the 1990s was small yet vibrant; full of passion\, satire\, self-deprecation\, and deep-cutting political and social commentary. Publishing these cartoons in the early years of Curve magazine (which was named Deneuve magazine between 1991-1995) was a natural fit\, aligning with the pivotal lesbian publication’s cheeky voice and journalistic integrity\, and enhancing both the aesthetics of the pages and its witty content. In the 1990s\, these alternative artists had few platforms to publish their voices and their art. Curve magazine is proud to have been at the forefront of amplifying these marginalized voices and allowing them to further spread lesbian representation\, culture\, and humor. \nThis exhibition opens Thursday\, July 13 and will remain on display through fall 2023. Click here for more information about the exhibition. \nAbout the Curator\nJulia Rosenzweig (she/they) is the Archive and Outreach Manager at The Curve Foundation. She is also an active contributor to the Lesbian Herstory Archives (LHA)\, where she co-manages the Lesbian Elders Oral Herstory Project\, a project that documents lesbian elders’ life histories through intergenerational dialogue and knowledge-sharing. Julia has researched\, archived\, and curated a variety of LGBTQIA+ materials\, including lesbian activist posters\, episodes of Martha Shelley’s 1970s radio show Lesbian Nation\, and Community Gallery institutional papers. Julia graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Italian Studies\, and completed her MSLIS at Pratt Institute School of Information. Julia brings an ethos of community-building and understanding through conversation to The Curve Foundation. She is honored to steward archives that center the narrative control\, empowerment\, and agency of their creators.
