DESCRIPTION:To conclude this year’s Festival — on what is Mother’s Day\, come laugh\, sway and sip with two of the nation’s greatest authorities on the extraordinarily diverse American Songbook – Jason Brock & Dee Spencer. More contemporary songs from the 1980s and 1990s will also be included to create a deliciously fun and unmistakably queer event. Brock and Spencer’s fabulous chemistry will bring the deep musicality\, lived experiences\, and fierce storytelling of legendary artists to life. This is the perfect Mother’s Day gift!

SUMMARY:Dance Mission Theater: Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose USA - Unbound (2017); shared bill with InSyncKathak
DESCRIPTION:Unbound\nRasika Kumar’s solo Bharatanatyam production takes you on an intimate journey\, revealing how we\, as women navigating our lives\, endure a thousand subtle cuts that diminish us\, forcing us to shrink and occupy less space in the world. What if we expanded to live a bold and unapologetic life? Featuring an original score by composer Sindhu Natarajan rooted in Carnatic music\, Rasika’s storytelling draws on traditional narrative frameworks where the main character\, the nayika\, pleads with the Goddess\, desperately seeking a new role model for the modern day woman. \nAbhinaya Dance Company of San Jose\nAbhinaya Dance Company strives to present innovative and professional-quality performances of South Indian classical dance forms. Since 1986\, Abhinaya has staged several full-length dance productions such as Shiva – The Cosmic Dancer (1986) to Jwala – The Immortal Flame (2011)\, Gandhi (2012)\, Arjuna (2014)\, and Vaanara Leela (2016)\, which received an Isadora Duncan Award for Best Performance. Abhinaya has been awarded several grants from state and city agencies and has collaborated with Kathak and modern dance companies\, Japanese Taiko drummers\, ShadowLight Theater\, and a Balinese gamelan ensemble. From 2017 to 2019\, Abhinaya explored themes of social justice through the experiences of Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King\, Jr. More recently\, Abhinaya’s productions have focused on women’s issues\, such as Through the Eyes of the Apsaras (2021) and Draupadi – The Unsung Warrior (2024). ‘California Wildfire’ premiered in 2022 addressed the pressing issue of climate change. Trained under Mythili Kumar and other renowned masters from Chennai\, Rasika Kumar has become a central figure at Abhinaya\, contributing as a principal dancer\, soloist\, and choreographer. \nPrakriti\nPrakriti is an ode to Mother Nature. It is a story about the precarious relationship between a nurturing yet authoritative mother and her intelligent yet most errant children! We humans\, irrespective of our geography and politics\, must embrace responsible sustainable actions to preserve our planet for future generations\, else face the life-altering wrath of nature’s fury. Creation\, coexistence\, change\, and resilience are threads woven into the beautiful tapestry of life. Drawing upon myriad personal experiences like wildfires\, earthquakes\, and droughts in California\, this relentless human spirit and its tryst with Mother Nature is presented through Indian classical Kathak dance. \nInSyncKathak\nIn the twelve years since its inception under the stewardship of Anupama Srivastava\, InSyncKathak has won critical acclaim\, 50+ awards and 250+ performances to its credit\, including \, All Indian Dance Festival at Carnegie Hall New York\, Drive East Festival New York\, New York Kathak Festival\, Sacramento Dance Sampler\, National YoungArts Week Miami\, San Francisco Movement Arts Festival\, Oakland Dance Festival\, and Toronto International Youth Dance Festival.

SUMMARY:Folk Yoga Studio: PULP - Pulp and it's completely different but also still pulp
DESCRIPTION:Pulp and it’s completely different but also still pulp\n“Pulp and it’s completely different but still pulp” is a dance show full of personality\, attitude\, vulnerability\, and juicy oranges. This is a remix of a show the company performed in 2019\, which was the last time the artists all performed together. Pulp is a fun group at its core—they use dance\, theater\, and satire to ask questions\, have conversations\, and (hopefully) make you laugh about their relationships with each other\, the world\, and its outrageous constructs. Since 2019\, they have grown up a bit and are so ready to share new perspectives on what consumes most of their thirty-something-year-old lives: autonomy\, identity\, injustice\, pleasure\, communication\, betrayal\, and love.

SUMMARY:Abanico Coffee Roasters: Melissa Cruz Flamenco - Tablao Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:Tablao Flamenco\nThe vibrance and allure of flamenco come alive in this tribute to the “tablao\,” an improvised collaboration allowing for the expression of the full spectrum of human emotion. A guitar’s rapid picado and thundering rasgueado meets articulating arms and fingers of the bailaora as she brings forth other-worldly inspirations. Deep cante jondo juxtaposed with light hearted cante chico\, the pulse of palmas and the stirring poly-rhythms of heel work weave and unravel to create tension and release so emblematic of flamenco. Each tablao presentation is unique\, the artists responding and reacting moment to moment\, creating in constant connection. The intimate space offered by Abanico allows the audience to feel the vibrational spontaneity of flamenco\, the Andalusian art form granted Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO.

SUMMARY:Theatre of Yugen at NOHspace: Wachowicz / Fret Studio Poland - Granica / The Border (2024\, U.S. Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:Granica / The Border\nThe Border oscillates between the acts of performance\, ritual and ceremony; simultaneously a “rite of passage” or a moment of “receiving and giving.” The Border attempts to create a new field\, where time is only a moving image of eternity. \nThe Border takes as its focus the true story of transgendered Ukrainian performance artist\, Antonina Romanova – a member of the Polish theatre ensemble\, Teatr ZAR. Romanova was drafted into the Armed Forces of Ukrainian to fight against the invading Russian army in 2023. Initially the project was supposed to exist as a film documentary about Romanova’s tour of duty. But when the war extended from months to years and Ukrainian troops were not demobilized\, or even rotated from the front lines\, it became a different type of exploration. Acknowledged in Edinburgh with a Fringe First Award in 2024\, The Border was created from the need to raise awareness on behalf of those whose voices are in suspension.

SUMMARY:Temo's Cafe: The Last Supper Party - An Evening of Poetry and Music with Fernando Marti\, Duane Forrest and Susan Dambroff
DESCRIPTION:The Last Supper Party Performance Series\nThe Last Supper Party is a monthly spoken word and music performance series inspired by Fe Bongolan’s landmark painting of the same name; a 200 sq. ft. canvas that covered one wall of our office when we were housed on Sutter Street during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe Last Supper Party presents the voices of diverse artists and writers who call out the myriad injustices and impacts of corruption\, unchecked power and greed. \nWe invite our audience to share ideas and find inspiration in the thoughts and words of artists whose perspectives are drawn from a kaleidoscope of cultures. But who are united by compassion and a common desire to seek justice\, equity and truth. \nOn even months (October\, December\, February\, April and June) The Last Supper Party will be part of the Mission Arts Performance Project (MAPP).

SUMMARY:閩橋 Min Bridges: stories from the Malay World\, Taiwan\, and mainland China
DESCRIPTION:The Min Languages form the basis of Taiwanese\, Hokkien\, Teochew\, and Hainanese. For most of the 20th and 21st centuries\, Min languages have been looked down upon as dialects: students received corporal punishment for speaking their home languages at school throughout the Chinese speaking world\, from Singapore to California. In artistic and dance traditions\, Min peoples are often depicted as insular\, uneducated\, and uncouth. \nMin Bridges seeks to change that. We’ve developed a series of original choreographies and reworkings of Min songs and folk\, classical\, and contemporary dances from throughout the countries where Min peoples live\, which show the diversity of Min-speaking cultures wherever they may be\, but in an elevated and respectful fashion that shows Min people not as two-dimensional stereotypes\, but complex and modern societies\, with strong and deep traditions. \nThis show reminds us of our centuries long history of coexistence\, and how Min peoples have acted as a bridge between cultures\, enriching all of us whichever side of the sea or strait we may come from. By delving deeply and elevating Min stories and the internal diversity of Asian and Asian American communities\, we break the homogenization and dehumanization which is the prerequisite of violence\, and replace it with bridges of love. \nBay Area Independent Chinese Dancers (BAICD) is a collective of Chinese dancers\, choreographers\, and allied artists telling our own stories firmly rooted both in our experiences living in the Bay Area and our cultural traditions. We are a fiscally sponsored project of Shawl-Anderson Dance Center\, and are proud to present our first show with artistic collaborators Ishami Dance Company\, Jenni Hong and Elise Knudson\, Tiffany Lin Art\, Jimmy Wing\, and Swathi Narayaran
