SUMMARY:Manny’s: Too Precious to Lose: An Evening with Jason Green
DESCRIPTION:Too Precious to Lose is an inspirational memoir from former Obama White House staffer Jason Green about his rural Maryland family’s untold history\, the merger of three churches—one Black\, two white—and how a radical embrace of community became their salvation and his. \nJason G. Green is a Maryland-born community organizer\, attorney\, storyteller and entrepreneur. Green served as Associate White House Counsel to President Obama\, advising on economic and domestic policy matters. Green co-founded SkillSmart\, a company that reshapes how communities measure economic impact\, and is CEO of EverGreen Labs\, where he supports visionary organizations working to expand economic opportunity and strengthen community. His award-winning documentary\, Finding Fellowship\, explores the rich history of Quince Orchard and the fight to preserve its legacy. A graduate of Yale Law School\, Green remains rooted in the work of truth and justice\, investing in stories that remind us who we are.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Sensational Sauces
DESCRIPTION:A great sauce is the difference between “I have to cook” and “I have something to eat.” It rescues the tired vegetable\, the plain bean\, the leftover grain. It turns three things from the fridge into dinner. \nIn this class\, we’ll make five sauces from five different corners of the flavor map: each one built to live in your fridge for the week and earn its keep across multiple meals. We’ll talk through the logic of each: what makes it work\, how to adapt it when you’re out of an ingredient\, and how far one batch can actually take you. \nYou’ll leave with the sauces\, the techniques behind them\, and the instinct for when to reach for which. \nMENU \nBlack Vinegar Brown Butter: the five-minute pan sauce for vegetables that need drama \nSmoky Almond Romesco: the red sauce that turns potatoes\, beans\, eggs\, and toast into dinner \nPreserved Lemon Tahini: the dressing-dip-drizzle for everything you already cooked \nBig Green Herb Sauce: how to use herbs like a main ingredient\, not a garnish \nMiso Caesar: creamy\, salty\, briny\, and built for more than lettuce

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Rent Is Too Damn High (And How To Fix It) w/ Supervisor Bilal Mahmood
DESCRIPTION:Get the inside scoop with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood\, moderated by Mission Local editor Joe Eskenazi and catered by Smitten Ice Cream! \nCome join us in the next installment of our series: Scoop with a Supe! We learn the goings-on of SF politics from the supervisors directly\, getting the inside scoop on their policy priorities and confronting complex issues head-on. This time\, we’ll hear from Supervisor Mahmood on his new affordability package\, dropping in June 2026 with a three pronged approach toward making the cost-of-living more affordable in San Francisco. \nThis town hall style event is a great way to connect with the Board of Supervisors and others in your community. Most tickets include the price of a scoop of ice cream built in\, provided by Smitten Ice Cream! And thank you to Mission Local for its partnership and moderation from editor Joe Eskenazi! \n___________________________________________ \nSupervisor Bilal Mahmood represents District 5\, including the Tenderloin\, Hayes Valley\, Lower Haight\, Western Addition\, Fillmore\, Alamo Square\, Japantown\, NoPA\, and Haight Ashbury. \nThe son of Pakistani immigrants\, he is the first South Asian and Muslim-American elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. His career has spanned civil service\, entrepreneurship\, and philanthropy\, working for over a decade to advance innovative solutions to support issues of public safety\, inequality\, and climate justice. \nAfter majoring in Biological Sciences at Stanford University and attaining a Gates Scholarship to attend the University of Cambridge\, he entered public service in the Obama Administration. As a policy analyst in the US Office of Innovation of Entrepreneurship\, he championed policies to support access to capital for small business after the Great Recession. Returning to the Bay Area\, he cofounded a software company in San Francisco to democratize access to artificial intelligence technology for small and medium sized businesses. \nDuring the pandemic\, Bilal started a community impact fund to invest back in San Francisco. He launched philanthropic campaigns that funded guaranteed income programs for restaurant workers\, bystander training for members of the AAPI community\, the Let’s Talk About Us campaign to raise awareness for domestic violence\, and the Upgrade California campaign to advocate for zero emission buildings. He is also an elected member of the SF Democratic County Central Committee\, where he has advanced resolutions calling for innovative solutions to our housing\, fentanyl\, and public safety crises. \nBilal is a lifelong renter\, who currently resides in the Tenderloin. You can often find him working out of the Philz on Golden Gate Ave\, grabbing a bite at Gioia Pizza in Hayes Valley\, going for a weekend run through the Panhandle\, or getting his favorite soft-serve from Cafe Maiko in Japantown. \n___________________________________________ \nSmitten Ice Cream serves the freshest\, creamiest ice cream on the planet. Known for its ultra-smooth texture and craveable flavors\, Smitten keeps things fresh by offering ever-evolving flavors alongside beloved classics. \nFounded in San Francisco by Robyn Sue Fisher\, Smitten began with a simple belief — ice cream tastes better when it’s made fresh. Robyn Sue invented and patented a machine that freezes ice cream in about 90 seconds\, taking it straight to the streets. In 2017\, she brought on Brooke Mosley\, and together they worked together to develop a proprietary ice cream base and continued to craft even more nostalgic\, unexpected flavors and experiences. In 2024\, Robyn handed the reins to Brooke\, ushering in the next chapter of Smitten. \nPraised by Vogue as “the freshest\, if not the best\, ice cream on Earth\,” and featured by Food & Wine\, The Infatuation\, Forbes\, Wired\, and TechCrunch\, Smitten operates popular scoop shops in San Francisco and San Jose\, along with a thriving catering business — and continues to find new ways to surprise and delight. \n___________________________________________ \nSince 2008\, Mission Local\, an independent news site based in the Mission District\, has been focused on high-impact\, enterprise reporting on everything from police reform to corruption at City Hall\, housing\, and the gig economy. Core to our mission is training the next generation of journalists who reflect the diversity of San Francisco. \nWe aspire to be a model of local\, self-sustaining\, fiercely independent news. \nOriginally a project of U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, we struck out on our own in 2014. In the summer of 2018\, we became a fiscally sponsored project. We kept growing and in October 2022\, the IRS granted Mission Local SF (EIN: 88-3177547) status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Transforming Tofu II: Now with Tempeh
DESCRIPTION:What comes to mind when someone says “tempeh”? If your answer is “isn’t that the one that looks like a sponge?” you are not alone. Tempeh has long lived in tofu’s shadow\, which is saying something given tofu’s own reputation problem. \nTofu is a blank canvas that transforms depending on how you treat it before it ever hits the pan. Freeze it\, tear it\, grate it. Each technique produces something completely different. Tempeh brings its own bold\, nutty character and rewards high heat and strong flavors. \nIn this class we dig into the techniques that make both ingredients genuinely exciting\, using simple methods like a box grater\, a hot pan\, and a freezer to turn something ordinary into something you will actually want to eat. By popular demand\, this follow-up to Transforming Tofu covers the techniques there wasn’t time for and finally gives tempeh its due. \nMENU \nCrumbled & Seasoned: Tempeh “Chorizo” Quesadillas \nMarinated & Pan-Seared: Maple-Tamari Tempeh \nTorn & Roasted: Crispy Tofu with Roasted Vegetables \nFrozen & Roasted: Saucy Tofu with Kale Salad \nGrated & Sautéed: Crispy Tofu Rice Bowl with Gingery Greens \nPureed: Lemon Tofu Custard Cups

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Ultimate Sales Show: Founders vs. Professionals
DESCRIPTION:SF has plenty of build events. This is where builders learn to sell. Live sales battles\, real judges\, audience votes. \nSan Francisco has a hundred events where people build things. This is the one where people sell them. \nYou can build an app in one afternoon now. You can vibe-code an entire product without writing a line yourself. Everyone’s a builder. \nBut here’s the thing nobody talks about at demo day: the hardest part was never the build. \nIt’s getting someone to pick up the phone. To take the meeting. To sign the deal. \n Great companies aren’t just great products – they’re great products that someone figured out how to get to market. And that someone is a seller. \n \nThe Ultimate Sales Show puts the craft of selling on stage – live\, unscripted\, in front of an audience. \nTwo teams go head-to-head across the full sales cycle. Three judges who’ve been in the trenches score every round. You – the audience – get a vote too. \nEpisode 1: Founders vs. Professional \nThree founders who built the thing and had to learn how to sell it -versus three professional sellers who do this every single day. \nSame product. \nSame rules. \nWho wins The Ultimate Sales Show’s inaugural title? \n*** \nIf you’re in sales\, come see how you stack up.\nIf you’ve never made a cold call in your life\, come see how it’s actually done – no filter\, no playback\, no AI. Just people\, pressure\, and persuasion. \nDoors open early\, drinks flow after. Come for the show\, stay for the company – you’ll be surrounded by some of the sharpest sales and entrepreneurial talent in San Francisco. \n***

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Flavors of Southeast Asia: Laksa
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the spicy and soul-warming world of laksa. If you’re new to laksa\, it is a spicy noodle dish in Southeast Asia. However\, there are as many varieties of laksa as there are states in Malaysia. \nThis annual class by Chef Linda is a deep exploration of one of Southeast Asia’s most beloved dishes—where no two bowls are ever quite the same – and a time to have fun with the quintessential flavors of laksa. We will build foundational techniques of making spice paste and coaxing the flavors out while balancing sour\, spicy\, and umami elements. You will understand the cultural influences—Malay\, Chinese\, Peranakan\, and Thai—that shape each bowl. \nLinda chose four recipes for our spice-filled adventure. We have two classic recipes\, accompanied by a few contemporary variations. It’s Laksapalooza! \nMENU \nLaksa Buffalo Wings \nLaksa Johor – Fish Laksa with Pineapple\, Cucumber and Spaghetti \nNyonya Laksa – Seafood and Chicken Creamy Laksa \nLaksa Cookies

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Scissor Cinema: The Waterlemon Woman and Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:Brava Presents is proud to announce our very first edition of ‘Scissor Cinema: A Double Feature’! Please join us in celebrating the beginning of Pride Month on June 5th and come back June 6th where Brava will screen two iconic Sapphic films. \nJune 5th: The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye\nThe Watermelon Woman (1996) is a 1996 American romantic drama-comedy film written\, directed\, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The first feature film directed by a Black lesbian\, it stars Dunye as Cheryl\, a young Black lesbian working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards\, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy” roles to which Black actresses were relegated during the period. \nJune 6th: Saving Face by Alice Wu\nSaving Face (2004) Wil is a lesbian\, but she does not dare tell her widowed mother\, Hwei-lan\, or her very traditional grandparents. She’s shocked\, however\, to find out she’s not the only one in her family with romantic secrets when she learns that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant. Unwilling to reveal who the father is\, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents’ home and must move in with Wil\, which puts a strain on Wil’s budding relationship with openly gay Vivian. \nThis screening is in collaboration with Less Than Half Pictures\, our in-house Production Team\, where 2/4 of it’s founders are Lesbian filmmakers. \nPlease join us for two nights of fun\, themed drinks\, laughter\, and community. See you there!

SUMMARY:Z Space: Becoming a Man
DESCRIPTION:Written by P. Carl\nDirected by Lyam B. Gabel \nMay 28 – June 14\, 2026\nZ Space’s Steindler Stage \nFor 50 years\, P. Carl lived as a girl and then a queer woman\, building a career and a loving marriage while waiting to realize himself in full. When he decides to affirm his gender\, his transition puts everything—family\, career\, friendships—at stake. A stage production based on the memoir\, Becoming a Man is a poignant and honest story about the courage and community it takes to become one’s true self and poses the question: “When we change\, can the people we love come with us?” Following a world premiere production at American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University\, P. Carl’s acclaimed story comes to life in its West Coast premiere at Z Space. \nGenerously funded in part by Battery Powered\, The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation\, The Sam Mazza Foundation\, and The Zellerbach Family Foundation.
