Roxie Theater: Happy Birthday, Wanda June

October 10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

After bursting into stardom in the fifties with his Oscar-nominated performance in BUS STOP (1956) and moving boldly into independent filmmaking with THE HOODLUM PRIEST (1961), Don Murray hit a wall in the mid-1960s. As his career momentum continued to falter, he decided to move away from hard-hitting drama and reveal the comedic talents that had first made him a star. He auditioned and won a most unusual role, in a film no one would ever suspect he’d want to appear in.

The title of this strange and wondrous film: HAPPY BIRTHDAY WANDA JUNE (1971)—a prescient farce about the perils of toxic masculinity.

The Kurt Vonnegut play burned through Broadway in 1970-71. The film version features Rod Steiger as a Hemingway-esque big game hunter missing and presumed dead who turns up just as his wife (Susannah York) is deciding between two suitors (Murray, as a dim-witted, hyper-patriotic vacuum cleaner salesman, and George Grizzard as a sensitive, introspective physician). Needless to say, once Steiger is on the scene, matters quickly escalate…

Never released on VHS or DVD!

Rarely seen or screened, WANDA JUNE is shockingly relevant to the times we currently live in—here’s an ultra-rare opportunity to see it on the big screen! Make your plans to join us on Thursday, October 10 for a one-of-a-kind film and the most unusual role in Don Murray’s career!
