Paxton Gate: Insect Spreading Class: Five Horned Rhinoceros Beetle

Prepare to be amazed by Eupatorus gracilicornis, affectionately known as the Five-Horned Rhinoceros Beetle—a true titan of the scarab beetle family! Hailing from the humid, subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, this species is renowned for the males’ elaborate cranial and thoracic weaponry: a fearsome display of five horns. While their glossy black exoskeleton and satin-sheened, golden-brown elytra give them an armored, otherworldly presence (with males stretching over to 3 1/2 inches!), these gentle giants are anything but aggressive. Males put their impressive horns to the test in ritualistic wrestling matches, vying for the attention of females. Beyond their captivating looks, these burly beetles are popular in entomological collections and even as exotic pets.
