ABOUT THE FILM:

San Francisco is ground zero for a human tragedy sweeping cities across America. It’s a crisis that has vexed policy makers while it has left thousands of people stripped of their dignity. At the heart of this epidemic are human lives. These are unique individuals, the majority of whom are suering with addiction and mental illness. Their story needs to be told. An intervention must be staged to save their lives, save one of America’s most beautiful cities and provide a model of hope for people across the nation.

Over the past decade, the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco has risen dramatically by more than 50%, even as spending by the city and county has skyrocketed by over 130%. These are the numbers of an epidemic that has not been effesctively confronted.

In stark contrast, in San Antonio, the community has coalesced around a new model of human-centered, 360 degree care and intervention that has over the same period produced a dramatic, 80% decrease in its unsheltered homeless population— and, in the process, built compassion and understanding feeding continued success. Can San Francisco adapt this model to achieve dramatically different results?

Now, the Independent Institute, based in Oakland California, together with the Salvation Army are leading a coalition to change the direction of homelessness in the Bay Area and oer the people suering through this crisis, and those in the greater community, a way out—and, in the process, provide a proof of concept and inspiration for cities across the country to embrace and emulate.

Through a mix of interviews with experts and policy makers along with first-hand accounts from people experiencing homelessness as well as those who have successfully escaped it, this 30-minute documentary takes viewers on an in-depth journey into the homeless crisis and how we can better address it. Beyond Homeless brings a unique mix of academic insight, human connection and reason for hope to audiences hungry for solutions to one of our country’s most entrenched problems.
