Golden Gate Avenue: Día de Muertos celebration hosted by Psyched! Radio

Psyched! Radio will host a Día de Muertos celebration on Friday, November 1, 2024, in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event will take place on Golden Gate Avenue between Jones and Leavenworth as part of the larger Psyched! Fest 2024—an annual citywide festival featuring a series of music and cultural performances.
The Día de Muertos celebration, supported by partners such as the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), the Tenderloin Community Benefit District (TLCBD), St. Anthony’s, and Larkin Street Youth Services, will provide a space for the community to honor the traditions of Día de Muertos while enjoying an exciting lineup of live performances and activities. The event is free and open to all ages, offering an immersive cultural experience in the heart of San Francisco.
The Tenderloin neighborhood is one of San Francisco’s most culturally rich and vibrant communities, and events like this are what makes our City so special,” said Mayor London Breed. “Building and sharing community is at the core of San Francisco’s values, and I am thrilled to see how City investments are continuing to help lift up the many cultures and heritages in San Francisco. I want to thank our event partners who are committed to honoring Dia de Muertos with residents, businesses and visitors this year.”
“It’s wonderful to see the Tenderloin community come together to celebrate this beautiful tradition,” said Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director, OEWD. “Psyched! Radio has put together an incredible lineup of artists that is sure to draw folks from across the City. This type of festive street activation ensures a welcoming environment so that all people can experience what makes this neighborhood and its small businesses truly special and unique. I hope everyone has a great time and gets inspired to keep coming back.”
Headlining the event is Tropa Magica, a dynamic duo from East LA known for their fusion of psychedelic rock and cumbia, joined by Viaje Nahual, blending Latin folk and experimental rock, and Gabi Bravo, offering a modern take on Latin American rhythms. Alongside the musical performances, attendees can expect to experience traditional Aztec dancers, a Día de Muertos altar, and face painting for all ages.
David Pacheco, singer and guitarist of Tropa Magica, stated, “We’re thrilled to be a part of this event and showcase our music for the community of Tenderloin. This Dia de Muertos celebration is a perfect opportunity for families to come together and pay tribute to our loved ones who have passed away.”
“This show is more than just a night of great bands; it’s about bringing our community together through the spirit of DIY music and cultural celebration,” said Guillermo Goyri, President of Psyched! Radio’s Board of Directors. “Psyched! Fest has always been about embracing creativity and inclusivity, and with artists like Gabi Bravo, Viaje Nahual, and Tropa Magica performing at our Día de Muertos event, we continue the tradition of uniting people for an unforgettable experience that celebrates the heart of independent music and culture.”
“This celebration highlights the cultural richness of the Tenderloin and underscores the importance of creating inclusive spaces for the entire community to participate,” said Kate Robinson, Executive Director of the Tenderloin Community Benefit District. “We are proud to support this event and look forward to seeing the community come together to honor such a meaningful tradition.”
In addition to the cultural and musical performances, food vendors will be on-site, providing a variety of options for attendees. Additionally, food vouchers will be distributed to the first 50 guests in two separate sessions: 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
As part of the broader Psyched! Fest 2024, which runs from October 30 to November 4, this event aims to bring a diverse audience into the heart of the Tenderloin, showcasing the neighborhood’s cultural significance. The festival, now in its third year, has become a fixture in the city’s cultural landscape, featuring independent musicians and artists across genres, from psychedelic rock to electronic music.
