Learn to take full advantage of the unique gardening climate in San Francisco, where you can grow your own fruits and vegetables year round. Join us each month for the Edible Garden workshop, where our expert instructors will go over everything you need to do in your vegetable garden that month. They’ll also take you on a full tour of what’s growing at the GFE that month. Bring questions and we’ll do our best to answer them so you can reap a bountiful harvest!
January: Soil fertility, weed management, and what to plant now.
February: Planning for your garden’s needs throughout the year (planting schedules, bed preparation, and compost.
March: Growing your own transplants, what seeds to start indoors and outdoors, and successful transplanting of seedlings.
April: Choosing the right spots for your vegetables in the garden and caring for the seedlings you have started.
May: Warm weather crops and plants that attract beneficial insects and watering needs of your spring garden.
June: Garden troubleshooting, fertilization, and managing weeds during the long (and often foggy) days of San Francisco’s summer.
July: Planning for your winter garden and summer pests and diseases to look out for.
August: How to take advantage of San Francisco’s “second summer,” tips for extending your harvest, and what crops to plant now in order to harvest vegetables throughout the winter.
September: Preparing your garden for the cool and rainy season and harvesting the fruits of your summer garden.
October: Caring for your emerging winter garden and how to properly harvest greens and lettuce.
November: Taking advantage of the rainy season by planting cold hardy crops such as garlic, peas, and edible perennials.
December: Caring for your garden in the colder months by amending the soil, adding mulch, preventing weed infestations, and harvesting herbs for winter time gifts.
