Shenson Salons: Michael Long, violin
Michael Long’s Shenson Faculty Concert Series classical music recital “Music in Times of Resistance” was going to highlight music written in or about extreme political circumstances and oppression. Schulhoff was a composer meant to be featured in this concert and will be central to the Shenson Salon. Researching his music has been a passion project of Michael Long’s. Schulhoff was a wonderfully eclectic Czech composer of German-Jewish descent who was captured by the Nazis in Prague just days after he had obtained Soviet citizenship to escape. The lack of dogma, the political content, and the open-mindedness of his music are inspiring to Long. The composers Bach and Ysaye as pillars of unaccompanied music repertoire and are also included in the Shenson Salon. The Shenson Salon Zoom concert is a preview for Long’s live-streamed concert on June 19 (supported by a CMC Faculty Creative Stimulus Grant) called “Works for Violin Alone”.
