Indómitas is a new, live podcast series hosted by Chelis López of KPOO and Radio Bilingüe, featuring untamable voices of fierce women artists and activists. For the first installment of 2020, Indómitas will interview Teresa Mejía, a community activist and Executive Director of the San Francisco Women’s Building.
This is a FREE community event (though donations are happily accepted).
Teresa Mejía is a community activist, feminist, single mother, Puerto Rican and executive director of The Women’s Building, which is located in the heart of the Mission District, brightly painted with a mural dedicated to women, Maestrapeace.
Teresa is originally from Puerto Rico and raised in a united and working-class community. She graduated with a degree in Social Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico and then completed a master’s degree in Public Administration.
On May 5, 1977, on a Thursday before Mother’s Day, she lost her mother, her sister, and her two little nieces, who were killed by her sister’s ex-husband, victims of domestic violence. Teresa buried her family and directed her energy to work with and for those who suffer domestic violence.
She co-founded two grassroots women’s organizations that promoted women’s rights and worked against domestic violence. In 1992, she emigrated to San Francisco, began as a receptionist at The Women’s Building and in 1998, became Executive Director of the San Francisco Women’s Building.
