Bay Area Video Coalition: Tech Talk Tuesday: September 2017

Join us for the September edition of Tech Talk Tuesdays, our monthly speaker series, where insiders from tech and other industries share the tips and learning experiences they’ve gathered while job-hunting and networking. You’ll leave with new perspectives and new tools to help you on your own career path. Come mingle with fellow TechSF participants and future applicants, enjoy light refreshments, and learn new approaches to navigating the field.

This month’s topic: Exploring Careers in Video Production

A Q&A session with BAVC’s Workforce Development Lead, Annie Tahtinen, we’ll hear from Liz and Cleave about their experiences working as Video Production professionals within a corporate environment, how they got their starts, and tips on navigating the field.

About Liz: As a filmmaker Liz explores history and memory through the sites and sounds of her own life and family, including a documentary about her search for her missing Japanese great-grandfather that leads her to the history of Japanese-Mexicans and the the Japanese internment in the United States and Mexico. Her work as a documentarian has also influenced her role as a media professional. Previously she worked at Link TV as a Producer on the weekly news show LinkAsia. Liz is currently working as a Producer for Advanced Systems Group serving the Google Developers Studio. Her team’s videos are available on YouTube on the Google Developers channel as well as The Google Cloud Channel. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

About Cleave: Originally from Florida, Cleave has been in production since 1992. He started in front of the camera as a the host of a kid’s show, then moved on to production with a Nickelodeon show called Gullah Gullah Island. From there, he has worked on 15 feature films, a few TV shows, music videos and thousands of commercials with directors such as Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, Antoine Fuqua, Rob Cohen and many others. Cleave has also worked with many celebrities including Richard Gere, Robert England, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter, Geddy Lee, and P. Diddy on productions as varied as Accenture to Sikorsky Helicopters (The Blackhawk Helicopter). Prior to joining ASG’s GDS team, Cleave worked at Apple’s Marcom on a small team that produced documentaries and product launch videos for WWDC and other Apple events. In his early years, Cleave worked as a dolly grip, crane tech, camera assistant and finally an Assistant Director and Production Manager. He has been a member of the Directors Guild of America since 2001. A father of two boys ages 12 and 23, Cleave played tennis for his alma mater University of Central Florida where he majored in Advertising and P.R. Cleave loves mountain biking, hiking, landscape and sports photography, and James Bond movies.
