Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

San Francisco’s chief health officer said today that the Navy kept the city in the dark for nearly a year about elevated plutonium levels it found back in November 2024 at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Read the disturbing report by Yujie Zhou and Marina Newman.

See our back story about a July meeting where skeptical residents were told they had nothing to worry about from contamination at the Shipyard.

City auditors found that San Francisco spends almost three times more per capita for street cleaning than L.A. does. The analysts also noted that DPW fails to track or report its spending “in a meaningful way.”

Check out our map of every street that will be closed to cars this Friday for Halloween trick-or-treaters. And on Saturday, the Tenderloin will throw its own Dia de los Muertos block party, with luchadores and live music.

More soon,

Sara
