A veteran officer was shot in the left foot Saturday as he and two officers in training tried to break up an early-morning brawl involving a group of women outside El Rincón, a nightclub at 16th and Harrison Streets.

Police did not disclose names, but said the officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Two potential suspects in a Camaro were detained at Potrero Avenue and 17th Street. No weapon was recovered, but shell casings were found a short distance away from the shooting incident, and at the same location that the vehicle was seen, police reported.

The veteran officer and two officers in the Field Training Officer program were driving by the club at 1:30 a.m. when they saw a large group of women fighting outside at 16th and Harrison.

Several men were trying to hold the women back. The officers got out of their patrol car to help break up the fight.

As police were separating the women, the officers heard several shots fired. The two officers who graduated from the Police Academy on April 30th saw their training officer go down and went to help him. They were able to call for assistance and put out a vehicle description of a car that sped away.

A dark-colored Camaro matching the description was seen at Potrero and 17th, and two potential suspects were detained.

The two officers are in the seventh week of the 17-week Field Training Officer program at Mission District Station.
