Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Mission Local’s See how they run series is following the mayoral candidates as they campaign. This week, it’s Mark Farrell, who visited a picnic in the Outer Sunset and talked about firing the police chief, clearing encampments, and remembering his mother.

Also in the Outer Sunset, we asked candidates for supervisor in D1 about the measure to ban cars from the Great Highway. Only one said the idea was “anti-mobility, anti-family, and just plain dumb.

Then there’s the politicsโ€”and businessโ€”of culture. The troubled Mexican Museum tried another round of fundraising from private donors, including a Saudi family and a wealthy Mexican businessman. A city audit earlier this year said the museum lacked the financial or organizational expertise to open.

Check out our stories and photos from Pride weekend: the boycott of the parade by pro-Palestinian queer groups, the unofficial Dyke March that happened anyway after the official one was cancelled, and joy at the Trans March.

More soon,

Sara

P.S. Super-interesting event next week: our colleagues at the SF Public Press are hosting a July 11 conversation about local government secrecy with Miranda Spivack, a former Washington Post reporter who’s got a new book on secret deal-making between local governments and corporations.
