Good afternoon!

In the year since Brooke Jenkins was appointed as DA, at least 45 employees have left the office, including long-term employees who worked for many administrations. Attorneys who left told Mission Local about favoritism, hires of inexperienced people into leadership roles, and high turnover.

The city controller and treasurer report that remote work and empty offices have blown a $484 million hole in the city’s tax haulโ€”and that the city remains over-dependent on business tax income from a “jarringly small” handful of large companies. What does this mean for SF politics going forward?

The Public Defender’s office has been holding sit-ins in front of the Hall of Justice to protest a growing backlog in hearings and trials. Over 1,000 people, 115 of them behind bars, are awaiting trials “seemingly indefinitely,” because Covid-era rules and judges’ vacations mean continual delays.

More soon,
