In response to deadly shootings at the hands of police nationwide, members of the ANSWER coalition and other protesters marched from 24th and Mission streets to the Mission police station on Friday evening. At 6:30 p.m., some 50 people gathered at the 24th and Mission BART plaza to make statements.
“I’m here because I’m smart, because I have an education, because if you have those things you gotta get off your ass and do something. It’s a national crisis. We need to be stronger,” said Pearl Ubungen. “It’s not just the Latinos and black [people]. I’m Filipino. It’s everyone. You see a wrong, you gotta correct that shit. I don’t know how people can sleep at night.”
On their way down Mission Street, up 16th Street to Valencia, and then to Mission Station, some 15 or so passers-by joined the march. At Mission Station the protesters paused again to hear more speakers before returning again to 24th Street to conclude the evening with closing statements before dispersing around 8:40 p.m.
