The families gathered in the cafeteria of the Salvation Army on Valencia Street.

Zach Crockett, a writer at priceonomics and a Mission resident who happened to bike by last Wednesday’s night fire, was the first to answer a question circulating on Twitter – people wanted to know what they could do, how they could help. He set up a gofundme campaign that has already raised more than $110,000.

Over the last week, he’s also been meeting and talking with the families and recently posted a profile of the Segovia-Caro family.

It’s 6:40 PM, and Toni Segovia has just wrapped up a long, back-breaking work day that began at dawn. The 42-year-old construction worker removes his vest, and unfastens his toolbelt. He’s thirsty, exhausted, ready to sit and relax with his children at home.
